The bullshit way the "refugee problem" is being handled. The piss weak excuse for a government
decides to get tough saying they are not going to get away with it anymore.

How should we handle it? Seems we are between a rock and a hard place. As we are the closest lucky country, we are always going to attract them, if we let them in more come, and if we just turn them away then the humanitarians come down on us like a tonne of bricks - and that wont stop them coming.

The only thing that seems to make sense is to take a leaf out of Indonesias book. Give them some fuel and food, and point them to NZ.

There are currently 10s of thousands of refugees passing through Italy into Europe fleeing the war zones of northern Africa. Our problem is nothing in comparison.

This is the problem. I am, however, choosing not to weigh into this debate (much) as it seems entirely nonsensical to me. I will say this much: automatically assuming that just because someone might support (on a humanitarian level) the helping of refugees, that it means they must therefore support the ones burning buildings down is stupid. It's as stupid as saying that we should stop helping any and all refugees solely due to the actions of the rotten apples. As a news junkie and at one time a journo myself, I will say that the media has a lot to answer for in the way they beat up public outrage on this issue. It's fire and pitchfork stuff, and it genuinely makes me sad to hear the sorts of "git orf o' mah prah-perty" type comments that are spewed across water coolers and lunch rooms around the country. Australians have a proud history of helping those in need. Don't let the (admittedly terrible) actions of some bad eggs ruin that.
