A very measured performance from Ancer, played the course brilliantly and showed all the course wingers how to stay patient and take your opportunity when it presents.

He did well to birdie two of the last four after that.I’m very impressed with Jake McLeod. Saw a little of him last week at Twin Creeks, and now he gets to play The Open at Royal Portrush, and wins the Australasian Order of Merit too. Tidy few weeks for the young Queenslander.

    Easy,

and it has to do Clayton. he is a shit designer, well IMO he is a shit designer of green complexes.

    13- about 290m par 4.
layup and you have - 60-70m to a green that has the smallest of landing spots.. but you can get some spin.
go for it and you will more than likely get a shit lie and not be able to spin the ball as the green is so high.
bump and run is not an option due to the undulation.

so it isnt risk reward as the landing spots are so small - it just isnt worth it. so it becomes a nothing hole, with nothing nice about it other than you can bogey it with 2 good shots and a ordinary putt. especially in high wind. it is a rubbish hole with a lot of local knowledge as to how to get your par and move to 14.

Like most of what he did at the Lakes - the are buried elephants everywhere, the greens are the wrong shape and size for the approach shots and the tiers are stupid. 11 is a good example of this and so is 14. Just the upkeep of 14 is ludicrous. who wants to pay to keep a football field size green FFS.

Then you have 16 which was one of the best short par 4's in the country that he moved to far away from the water, so now the second shot is so much easier. (he may not have moved it... but my memory was the water was closer when i last played it before he butchered the course, so i am going with "he moved it")

The Lakes - is just Meh, pretty as from a lot of angles... but all the holes from 2-7 are average at best, 4 is a joke of a green, 8 has the best view on the course from the tee. 9 he ruined with the green - 10 is an awesome hole and always was... etc etc etc.

whatever they did with him - it isnt $20 million better than it was, and the clubhouse looks like a train station terminal.

I'm standing behind 14th green on Sunday arvo trying to watch guys hit across the water but my old eyes can't pick up much. Nicolas Colsaerts hits his second from way back and the crowd hears what sounds like a branch cracking in a tree. Turns out a guy a few metres away has worn the shot on the full, on his head and the ball has bounced back toward the green about 15 metres just clearing a bunker. The guy barely flinches, just keeps standing & watching.

Colsaerts was amazed. He did sign the ball for the punter.

So presumably no call of fore before the punter got clocked?

I certainly heard nothing. The thing is you're very close to the back of the green so it's probably a fine line between a great shot to a back flag and a near death experience.

Mike Clayton here. Do you guys want to have a reasoned discussion about the Lakes - or just rant?

Interesting watching the 1980's Open that was held at the old Lakes setup

Certainly a much less manicured course then, and less control over bunker shots compared to today, most were taking persimmon into #17

Virge's rant did seem to have some discussion points in it.

Hey Mac; perhaps what might be a good idea is to explain your concept of the sloping green shapes at the lakes, that seems to be the most sore spot amongst the haters on here

Does anyone think/know/actually believe this is really Mike Clayton??Say what you will about The Lakes’ redesign, but Clayton is one of the more astute articulators of all things golf that I’ve read/heard/come across. Anyone who reads his columns in golf magazines or has listened to what he has to say about The Spirit Of St Andrews or has heard his episode on The Fried Egg Podcast will attest to this. And anyways, Geoff Ogilvy vouches for Mike...but we certainly don’t need any more proof to see that Clayton is switched on.

Clayton use to post regularly on TGF, which I am lead to believe bit the big one a few weeks back.

He is also active on Twitter and interacts with many.

I suspect one of his lurking fanboys tipped him off into the thread
