You know what? That’s exactly what I’m figuring out during this “dash” for the handicap reduction. I was 2 behind my handicap after 5 holes and was tempted to try to drive the short par 4 6th to try to get back on my handicap. I made a conscious decision at that moment to forget about my score and play each shot as well as I could and keep the ball in play.Even if I don’t get down to single figures by the end of the week, I would have learned something valuable about playing good golf. 😊

I played Gardiners Run today in a social group of 2.Mate hadn't played for a few months so it was as much a hit out for him as it was me just trying to make some shots.First few holes weren't great but I was still 1 under handicap,go figure.Started to make a few good strikes, got into a rhythm and finished the front 9, 4 over off the stick and 3under handicap.Same on the back 9,just find a rhythm, strike good drives and then just make a good swing on the irons.Finished the back 9 at 1 over Off the stick and 4 under handicap.

Total for the day was 77 OTS

    Handicap was 7 under.

Limit the mistakes, make a good swing, they are my only thoughts for each shot.I am off 9.7 GA,so I am going to make mistakes just not to many hopefully

It shouldn't be so hard to figure out that your game should not be focussed around an arbitrary number calculated by some mob in an attempt to equalise competitions.

Maybe, but it doesn't hurt in a conversation to say that you play off single figures

I think the handicap is about as good as any other quantifiable number to rate you as a golfer. Not perfect but I want to be able to shoot in the 70’s enough times for it to reflect on my handicap. Eventually I’d like to be able to play off scratch at my home club. At age 46 playing off 11-12, many will consider this impossible. But if you don’t set your goals high, you’ll never get there. I’ve got a road map and I’m prepared to work hard. If I fall short and “only” get down to 5 or 6, is that such a bad thing?

I'm also talking about how you are measuring your current round against your handicap after each hole. Why care? It is unrealistic to expect that you will beat your handicap every round; if you get within a few shots, you are doing well. If you are setting your expectation of beating your handicap for every round, you will be let down more often than not, unless you are on a big improve or a burglar.

Are you so self-absorbed you think posts are directed at you when I quote someone else?

I think it’s good not to think about the score in general during a round. However, every time I play, I’d like to beat my handicap. Not a burglar or on the big improve and statistically I’ll come up short more often than not but that’s still the goal. I try not to think negatively if I don’t achieve my goal and try to figure out where I can do better next time.

After couple more rounds, my GA handicap is now 8.8.

It’s my lowest ever handicap under the new system and while I’ve come up a bit short of my target, I am content. My game feels pretty good at the moment and I can’t wait to see how low I can go in 2019. 😊
