I was talking new car prices with a mate last weekend. I've just jumped on a few Canberra dealer sites.

A Camry SL hybrid is now over $50k driveaway.

Hyundai Palisade is $83k drive away

An I30 with fruit is almost $40k.

Since the demise of manufacturing in Australia, crossed with the part shortage brought on by Covid, the car market has gone nuts.

Yeah that's crazy! $83k for a Hyundai is insane! $50k for a Camry sounds over the top too.

I still can't believe you can pay well over $100k for a Landcruiser or a Patrol these days.

The Camry was revamped earlier this year.

The trend seems to be throwing a bit more fruit into the vehicles and bumping prices. Mazda did it with the 3 a year and change ago, basically planned to separate it from the others it normally competes with.

The Stinger is a great car from all accounts. Kia has come a long way. For ages, they were the only manufacturer showing growth every quarter, while market share was declining for the majority of the others.

This rates up there with Jazz's Covid argument.

You're assuming I know nothing about it. Is it not supposed to rival things such as an M3, RS4 or C class AMG just cheaper? Isn't it tested @ the Nurburgring?

It might seem ridiculous but the market will decide.

If they don’t sell they’ll be cheaper next year.

And how about the luxury import tax (or whatever it's called) that was brought in to protect the domestic motoring industry? I note that didn't end when the industry did. What portion of a new car price does that make up?

Current FY - you pay 33% tax on the portion of the vehicle with a GST inclusive value above the LCT Threshold

    LCT Thresholds:

    Fuel Efficient Vehicles - $79,659
    Other Vehicles - $69,152

A Fuel Efficient car is “a vehicle that does not exceed 7 litres per 100km as a combined rating under the standards enforced under Section 7 of the Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1989.

So that Palisade, if you get the 2.2 Diesel Highlander, is $73,555 MRP - On Road cost of $5,109.35 - LCT of $1,938.60 for a grand total of $80,602.95

    Start with classic cars.

VW beetles are going for $30K... 30K plus for a Nazi bug ??? WTAF??
The Kombi - starts @ $80K and can go up to $200....

The pre 2000 MX5 is the cheap one though... $4-5K pre COVID. $14-20K now.

Thats nothing....some are going for over 500k ( like the GTHO falcon) One of the guys here drives a transporter that specialises on auctioned classic/elite cars. He was showing photos of the cars he has carried and named the price of each. He said one rusted out shell was sold for 15k, something like monaro or torana. You might only be able to afford a skateboard for the next shitbox rally.

HO and XB/XA... are a bit specialized and you expect the price.

A god damn beetle... $30K ??? You couldn't pay me $30K to own those horrid little things. The good ones and i use the term very broadly... start @ $70 K

    https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/vol...le/?sort=Price

So i ask you - would you like an BMW M3 or M2 from 2018 or a Beetle ?

    same price...
