Default Riverside Oaks. Used to be good, NOT ANYMORE

    Riverside Oaks.

Once the perfect playground for any golfer will soon become a Ghost town.....

When I was in my early 20's I was invited out to Riverside Oaks on a Corporate Day. Had an awesome day and drove home with the biggest of grins. Back then it was $150 per round and the course was the best course I had ever seen.

I could never afford to pay $150 per game so that was it for me playing at Riverside Oaks, whilst I went off into the big world and tried to earn a buck.

Roughly 5 Years ago I has the pleasure of joining Riverside Oaks. $1950 for one years membership and that included a cart. Super Value. The second new course had recently opened up so we would play two rounds of golf most Saturdays with both courses in great condition.. Times where good.

    So what's happened.

Like all course the money starts to dry up, head green keepers come and go. One course gets washed away in the floods. Management think it wise to keep increasing fees yearly even though members see declining playing conditions year on year. As it stands today Riverside has a new General Manager, the ex GM from the Heritage in Melbourne and I was recently informed he apparently run it into the ground whilst he was at the helm their which now makes sense and he seems to be doing a stellar job of ensuring Riverside Oaks will be nothing more than a paddock in the coming months and years to come. Hope I am wrong but I would like to get a bet on with Sportsbet if I could to validate I am not.

Today Riverside costs $5000 per year, and remember this is for only one course now as the other one got washed away !!. The one course left is probably in the worst shape its ever been in. 12 months ago roughly, 230 member base of which over 80% have now left to join much cheaper neighboring courses given the constant pricing increases.

Well it's sad times, Covid etc etc etc and the time has come to say my farewells to Riverside Oaks, just like the previous 80% of members. I tried so hard to hang in hoping things would turn around, but even with many of my mates having already departed, the price increase was the final nail in the coffin not to mention course conditioning.

I hope they get a new General Manager one day that recognizes the benefits that a strong member base can bring to a club as the present GM clearly does not.

If you are thinking of having a round out there anytime soon (well post Covid that is) I would advise you to look for and alternative better conditioned golfing destination...

All the best guys and stay safe.

Such a shame indeed!! We have a group of 12 that go there each year on their "2 rounds, carts, accomodation + breakfast deal" around this time of the year. I think last time it was around $200/head..great value and then we would stay and have dinner there at the restaurant. Lets home they sort things out.

So...is the 2nd course "gone" forever?? Or in need of repair?

2nd Course being Bungool, no-one really knows, they lodged an insurance claim and the results were not positive and management have not given any updates as to when they will rebuild. On a couple of occasions we have overheard some social clubs requesting their money back so I would be careful in making the trip up. It really is sad as I used to love going out there. But everything revolves around money and a lack of it will always cause a course to deteriorate fast. Also the General Manager is a real goose and continues to make poor decisions. The entire Pennant team from last year have all left. Sad times for a once premium golf course.

I had to giggle when it first opened with the 'PGA National' tagline.

They could not have picked a more inconvenient location in Sydney, from the airport, for national/international professionals to get to.

Even I think it is in the middle of nowhere, and I grew up in Dural.

Yes is sad. Last few trips I did out there (going back a couple of years now) it was awesome. The two courses made it a good weekend destination and I thought it would boom.

I get the course being washed away is going to create angst amongst the members, but in reality golf is booming everywhere else in Sydney currently isn't it? Tough if RO can't be surviving even with just the one course in this climate.

You don't recall the floods that washed everything west of Blacktown down the Hawkesbury?

Very sad indeed, a group of us had a great weekend there about 12 months ago, really enjoyed the new course!

Horrible luck with the floods, I have seen the photos and it unbelievable how high the water got. I heard only 2/18 greens stayed above the flood water. 😳

Stealth, is there any truth to the rumours that you instigated all of this so you could play #1 in the Pennant Team?

Had heard some whispers of bad times as a mate was on the greens staff for a while. The new course was a real gem, especially from the tips and was in great condition each time that I played and the floods absolutely destroyed it, a real shame.

Hopefully they rebuild it and get their business plan back on track as it has the potential to be a golfing mecca

    Sorry - $5K ?

Its $4300 for Elanora.. Pretty sure the Lakes yearly fees aren't that after joining fee.

Cant understand how that is even possible.

Just checked.. $5500 a year including cart... WOW.

Yeah you don't need to be a rocket scientist to know those fees aren't sustainable based on location alone, never mind the fact one of the courses has been out of action for a year and may never come back.. Its crazy!!

This is a gee up, right? There's no mention of mistreatment due to COVID and nobody I know who is a member there has any issues that are COVID related. Rameet, if you have a personal issue with the club, take it up with them rather than encourage people to complain to the authorities.

Oh, by the way, welcome to Oz Golf Forums, great first post

A few years ago they were charging green fees for major pennant practice rounds. I was going to complain to golf NSW but the bloke at golf NSW was on their team
    Nice home advantage to have.
