4BBB Question
Hi all
This post is a bit of a brag but also I want to seek opinions before I raise something with my club.
A bit of background - I’ve played really crap for the last several years and and one point had blown all the way out to 30. I decided to put up or shut up and have had many sessions with the club pro and worked hard on my game. Prior to last week I was back down to a daily of 23 on our slope 129 rated course.
We had the club 4bbb Stableford Championship last weekend and the one before. All one grade. I had my two best rounds ever on the course - 88 and 87 off the stick. We went 51 and 49 Stableford points to win the title by three.
This morning the results went up on the club website. We aren’t listed as the champions. The champions were declared on gross points-ie without handicap. We are the “nett” winners but not champions.
Now in the club championships I get gross wins - but that is stroke and there are three grades. This is Stableford and one grade. Every other Stableford comp the winner is on Stableford, not gross, points. If it was a gross event I wouldn’t enter - the winning team has a guy that plays off +1. I can never compete.
So my question is - is this normal? Before I say something I wanted to see if this is universal across clubs, but it seems ridiculous to me that a Stableford Championship with one grade is decided on Stableford points without handicap.
One further piece of info - the team winning the gross and declared champions contains the club captain.
Would greatly appreciate input based on your club experience.

A club will generally have a number of "honour board" events during the year, whilst most aside from Club Champs/4somes will be net based, its not uncommon to have a scratch 4ball championship. 4balls are high handicapper benefit events hence the reason there is often a scratch comp.
I don't know how big your club is, at mine every event will have a CoC (Conditions of Competition) available to all when you sign up. Ask the Captain for a copy of the CoC or ask whoever won it last year.

Did the club captain come second to you?
Once you go yellow, you will never go back

4BBB Championship is usually stroke with a Stableford event run in conjunction for the others that have no chance in the scratch event.
Sounds perfectly normal to me.

Happens all the time, if the days comp is Stableford, the scratch winner is also based on stableford.
Comp results might be H.Atchman (2) 38. Scr H.Atchman 36

I'm with Hatchman on this being a "championship", but gross stableford seems dodgy. See if you can find out if it was the same for last year.

A Gross and nett event is quite normal in honour board events. Gross Stableford scores are easily worked out using electronic scoring

Our 4bbb cbampionship winners are the lowest gross scores and then there is the nett winner.
Seems perfectly normal to me

Ok thanks seems normal enough then. Just seems strange as there is only one grade so basically only two or three teams have a chance

That might not end well for you, and there is no upside. The tournament format has been in place as is for how long?
If it was a gross event I wouldn’t enter - the winning team has a guy that plays off +1. I can never compete.
and he cant compete for the nett.

Criticism doesn't bother me, as it means I am doing something and people are watching.

That’s my point - my recollection is that every other year it has been the nett- this year seems different.

This. I always though the idea of a club championship/honour board event was to identify the best golfers and net events are just tacked on as a daily comp.

Ahhh I see. Nope not at all. I hated golf for years and blew out to 30. I have worked really hard with sessions with the pro every Thursday for a few months. Started the comp off 23, now 21. 20 is my lowest ever daily at this course.
Changed a lot and I still have room to improve. 18 was as low as I ever thought I could get to, maybe 15 is possible now. But this is the best I have been in a long long time.

My previous club had a 4B championship and the gross scores for each grade were the champions.
I need to mention I won A grade and my partner never got on the card 😂

The second one of these you are counting is a midweek comp.
