thanks for giving us your time here Jack. I was just saying the other day down south how knowledgeable you are of how the game is played.
anyway enough of the suck job, that's for rubin.
Jack - i have come down from 11.6 to 9.5 this year so far, obviously looking to get into singles. i played Busselton on Thursday in the comp and shot a even 36 on the front 9. Hocko was there giving me good advice about how im gonna struggle to bring it home now after that front 9 and how lucky i was that 9. The fact i had pantsed him the front 9 may have something to do with this.
i was aware myself that i didn't want to get the "Chokley's" as we like to call them over here, i started 10 with an easy par then had my first bogey on 11. i was starting to struggle with driver and on the way home had par, tpl, bird, par, dbl, tpl.
i want to know how do i tell myself to stay in the game, i've shot an 80,74&78 in the past 6 games, i know i can shoot a decent score but thursday was the first time i've been even after 9 in a comp round.
any words of wisdom of how to keep my head down and keep things smooth on the closing stretch??
Simmsy, firstly well done on an even par front nine. Had I been there to guide you, I would have bought you a beer for the tenth hole, to reward your fine stroke play and to settle your nerves. It takes a couple if holes for the alcoholic goodness to soak in and I'm certain it would have made a difference.
The doubles and triples are however of great concern. A player of your talent level should be having no more than bogeys on the bad holes. Can you give me an insight into how they happened?
Jack, how do I go under par?
I can shoot 72's - 75's with the best of them but I've only gone under the card twice in the last 4 years (in golflink rounds anyway), both being 71's.
How do you go low?
Subscribed to Uncle Jack's pearls.
I was struggling a bit with dvr all day even on front 9. But on the back I was getting big cuts going. Trying to be relaxed but not transferring weight onto front. Getting caught with weight back. It's a long time fault of mine but one that came out when I was trying to relax when I should of been making sure I was getting thru the ball.
1 tpl was in deep kack then bunker and a non caring 3putt.
Dbl was a dumb error of trying to be cute with a short side.
Tpl on last was dvr in R bush up against tree failed to get it out, tried for hero shot into green from rough 180 out put it into water. 3putt dejected finish.
It was all down to dvr not being good all day and with a bit more pressure the fault got worse
Jack,
How can dc68 beat Shadesy?
Forum needs more banter.
How do I stop choking after being 2 under at the turn and shooting 5 over

Lefty, sub par is s difficult one. You have to not be afraid. You can do it.
Jack
I am interested in your advice "I play the shot that gives me the best outcome"
Several times I found myself in between clubs. Or hybrid would be way to long and 4i not enough.
The best play was finish short and try and get up and down.
Can you elaborate on the above statement?
Why exactly do I need to answer to you?
Nullarbor Cup Record 4-0-0
UnCivil War Record 2-0-0
GSM Best Finish: 1st
Vic Champs Best Finish: Tied 4th
Number of Times beating DC: 1
Shadesy, quite often the best outcome is making certain that you avoid the worst outcome. Unforced errors lead to big scores but are easy to avoid.
Thanks jack

Hi Jack, long time listener, first time caller. Love your work.
I battle deciding when to use driver and when to use my 3 wood off the tee. Was hoping for some thoughts on when to pull the trigger on the big dog?
Of my two best scores of 2012, one I used 3 wood for nearly every drive, the other I used driver on 12 holes. Same exact score, but was forced to hit more long iron approaches using 3 wood off the tee. With driver, I had more GIR's for the round but that was offset by blow outs when missed fairways.
There's a 20-40m difference in length between driver and 3 wood, but obviously better control with 3 wood (except at Summer Cup - dont ask). My miss with the driver is a slice, which can get severe on occasion.
Cheers
Ashes
You asked for a powerade you need a shot of heroin for your game.
Jack, what's your take on Schooners or Stubbies pre round.
I had winners hangover from last week, and started well but didn't have my usual stubby on the 3rd
(Whoever has the lowest points after the first 2 holes buys Stubbies)
I ignored this today as I parred the first 2 so felt super confident for the round, then I doubled 3 and played like a **** for the rest of the day.
Should I go back to having beers early?
Jack how do I stay positive when my game is turning to poo? How do I block the negative thoughts i.e. I'm going to shank this and instead think of hitting a good shot.
Very good question Ashes. It depends on the course really. For a man of your handicap, there really shouldn't be that many times when the driver gets a run. Ball in play is what you need. One of the biggest mistajes I see from higher handicap players is hitting driver on every par 5. Big mistake. For the higher handicapper, the par 5's should be easy pars provided you can get the tee shot in the fairway (anywhere really, distance not relevant). Easy layup to wedge distance and then middle of the gree. It is that easy you know.
So in your case, only driver when its wide open, probably down wind and with plenty of room to the right. And dont forget that you don't need to thrash the modern driver to get the best results out of it.
