Evening Trendsetters,
How many Ozgolfers are not gaming a driver?
I've gone from Driver to 2 Hybrid (Sim2 Rescue)
I've lost about 20mt in distance, but Fairways hit have gone thru the roof.
Thoughts?
Cheers

Driver always.
It’s all well and good playing from the fairway but hitting driver is fun.

I finally found a 3W that works, Cobra F9, after almost a lifetime of hitting fairway woods along the ground ( well the truth is i fixed the swing fault).
I rarely would tee up a 3W because afraid of giving up too much distance, but i have so much confidence with this, its only 10m shorter than my driver according to my Garmin stats, which is nothing and its straighter. I often wonder why i dont use it all the time. (I might ask 4puttpete for hhis wisdom)
Fairways are overrated. Go long!
This is a question that could only be asked by a person who hits it a good distance.
The last time I hit anything else but a driver on a par 4 or 5 was on the 15th at Bonville in the NSW/Qld Ozgolf event many years ago. I regretted it.
For me, the driver is the easiest club to hit.
"There are 50 things to remember in the golf swing. Trouble is that I can only remember 49 of them" - Bob Hope.
I've taken mine out of the bag temporarily as my swing speed has increased since I bought it and the shaft is too flexible now. I'm happy using my 3 wood until I either replace the shaft or just sell it and buy a whole new driver, as the distance isn't a whole lot different to what I was achieving but the accuracy is a lot better. Updating my irons is next on the list before I worry about that though.
After my first hit in 6 months yesterday, I'd say ditch driver! Didn't hit a fairway with a driver once, and not once had a clean shot out. My only two fairways (well, one was just off) were with my 3 wood (which also turned out to be my longest drive of the day) and my 3H. Though, every other 3 wood I hit (once teed, 3 off the deck) all rolled along the ground (ala previous MTB).

I just bought a 14 degree 3 wood. Haven’t gamed one in over 10 years
In the bag
Taylormade Stealth 2 9.0 - AD DI 7X, Taylormade Sim 5 wood - AD DI 8X, P790 2/5-GW S300 AMT, Taylormade Hi Toe 53/14, 57/14, 60/10, Taylormade Spider, Taylormade 2018 staff bag
Driver, but probably puts me in the same spot as your 4 hybrid.
You don't get me. I'm part of the Union.
After years of hitting driver at every chance last time out at my local course I changed strategy, out of 14 part 4 and 5’s I normally hit driver 13 times. There is one hole I alternate between driver and hybrid.
Last time out I decided to go conservative and hit the below from tees.
2 x 3w
5 x hybrid
7 x driver
It felt a bit weird and almost boring, but it was a lot of fun in a way too knowing that I was more likely to be in the fairway. Hit 12/14 fairways, 13/18 greens. Normally more like 8 FW and 9-10 greens. Pity about the 39 putts!
One round may be an aberration, but I will keep the experiment going.
I hit driver 4 times a round at the home course. More value finding the fairway, and we have plenty of fairways tighten up or run out at 235.

Depends on the course. Gunnamatta and Moonah both reward long and strong so plenty of driver need, but Old I am down to the 3rd where I want to hit driver and maybe 9th if I'm feeling good. I would drop it out if I only played Old.

Most blokes would probably benefit from a driver lesson. I don't really find a 3W any more forgiving. I sometimes bag one because I adore the sound of my M2.
Grip it and Rip it boys!!

I wouldn’t be able to play in the shade of the trees if I didn’t use driver, it gets hot out of the shade here.
Driver is the longest and lowest loft club in your bag - factors that make it hard to hit. On the other hand, it's the biggest head, which makes it more forgiving. I suspect people who struggle with driver but hit 3 wood well should consider a higher-lofted (12-14 degree) driver with a slightly shorter shaft - but obviously individual circumstances may differ.
Either way, having a back-up option off the tee (hybrid, fairway, iron) can make a huge difference, if you don't need the extra distance a driver gets you. But so much depends on the player, how far they hit the ball, and the course/hole.
