Golf club comp prize payout
At my home club the prizes getting paid seem to have dwindled in the last couple of years. For example, yesterday with the normal $10 comp fee with 104 playing in the comp the payout was 27%, How does this compare to your clubs? I feel the payout should be 50% of match fee. The 27% also included NTP and best gross score, so only top 12 in the field received a payout.

dowdsy, I don't think its unfair that members know how the competition fee pool is being allocated. Just creates problems if its hidden.
Our allocation may not be known to all, however the club takes around 15% to fund the costs of pennant teams and end of year trophies. Whilst this sounds like a small percentage, all the paid out money goes to your account and has to be spent in the pro shop, the mark up is 40% so the club effectively takes more.
If your club has a "pay for play" model, I don't think its unreasonable for an increased take out of competition fees, nevertheless, this should be available information.

Dowdsy. Is your club privately owned or a incorporated association?

Incorporated association, not for profit I would be guessing. Definitely not private owned.

I'm with the Captain on this question. I don't know and I don't care.
However, Dowdsy is clearly unhappy about it, and should raise it with the golf committee.
Slightly off topic, but we run a Friday Pro Comp once a month where all the prizemoney goes to the winners. There is no lucky members draw and a reduced number of balls given out in the ball rundown. Effectively, this doubles the first and second place prize. This Friday comp doesn't get one extra player than the normal Friday, meaning that nobody plays that comp just for the additional prize money.

Ours was looked into recently.
We had a few instances where the allocations dipped and there were a few lettered received by the committee and the payouts were brought back to 40%.
We had a 147 field where the guy in 4th received $15 above his $10 entry fee, which raised some eyebrows.
The extra funds don’t go towards awards nights and our pennant sides are heavily covered by sponsors.
We also have a sponsor for every single Sat competition as well as many of the midweek ones, which covers the winning prize and sometimes runner up and gross.

Why it matters to me is that often the only time you can play on a weekend is by playing in the comp. if I have parted with several thousand dollars already, shouldn’t I be allowed to just play golf....rather than b rapt up in what I score and having to pay $10-15 for the privilege.

Then it doesnt matter. The club isnt profiteering out of comp fee revenue, because there is nobody taking a profit. If you want more comp prizes, either comp fees or membership has to go up, or cut expenses somewhere else.
I recommend you get on your clubs committee, then at the next AGM raise an objection from the floor on this exact scenario, and have your freind with the mic embarrass the heck out of you in front the club, like what happened to me in my mid 20's. So yeah i see where you are coming from.

I think it’s definitely a balancing act.
Comp fee revenue, like all revenue, goes in to the course, the club and making improvements. Especially if the committee is doing its job properly. Whatever a club is handing back to players has to be within their financial means.
If that revenue line is closed to hand out more in prizes then the shortfall would need to be made up elsewhere or spend on the course goes down. Simple maths. I know what I’d prefer.
In my view most clubs will have 3 options to increase prize payments - increase comp fee, increase membership, increase external revenue like social play and corporate days.
It’s not a simple one size fits all, each club will have different issues that need to be managed but the key consideration should always be the members and the golf course.

Capt, they will make more money out of me at the bar after my social round than they will out of a comp fee!

Southern has an $8 entry fee for comps, an additional $5 if you elect to go in the Pro comp (ball comp).
I'm not sure if this additional cost is publicised to potential new members, as if you play each week, or for some, a couple of times a week, that's between $500 and $1000 a year, on top of the subs.
I played Yarra Yarra with my uncle and they don't have a comp fee, but do have a fee for the Pro comp (ball comp). Granted the annual subs there are a lot more than Southern's
