Well, Spotify is a surprise landslide winner in our house so far. It was always going to be positive for me, as on Android, the Apple Music app is not that great. But surprisingly my wife says she is much preferring Spotify over AM and finds the app works much better on her iphone than AM. In our car for instance, if you haven't driven it for say half a day plus, AM doesn't start playing music straight away (android or iphone). She has to open the app and start playing via her phone, then it's ok for a while. But often it doesn't remember where she was so she has to open the album or playlist again and start a new shuffle. And this happens everytime after a reboot. For all of us, Spotify just automatically starts playing as soon as connected to the car, and starts from where it left off every time. Even after multiple phone reboots. She is also adamant that the music sounds better than on AM. While I told her that AM uses a lesser quality/bitrate I don't know if that's really true or now.
What I've also found is that Spotify's much much better at normalising the music levels. AM, I was always turning it up or down as some stuff was softer, but haven't had that happen with Spotify. Even with music I uploaded myself.
The only downside is we have free data on Telstra with AM, but I'm getting back into the habit of downloading my music to my phone again. Can't wait till we've had it long enough to start getting some decent suggestions going.

Listened to my first Discover Weekly playlist curated by Spotify, and it was bloody outstanding!!! While I only added a few songs to my library it was a fantastic mix of songs, some from artists I already have in my library (but not the song), some covers of songs I already like, and some new (or old) stuff I haven't listened to. It even picked up that much of what I listen to are live recordings and probably 2/3's of the playlist was made up of live stuff. Very impressed so far.

Apple is continuing to do Appley things and Spotify has just had enough:
Netflix went this way recently didn't they, not allowing you to subside through the Apple app? Ultimate media devices my arse! Can't play any video my kids throw at them without me first converting it. Pretty much the same with music.

The “30% apple tax” is funny.
Considering every company who makes money via selling apps is required to pay it. Although Ek is trying very hard to say it’s a Spotify specific thing.
“The streaming music service failed to mention that Apple recently updated its subscription policy by dropping its cut to 15 percent for subscriptions older than one year.”
Spotify playing the poor hard done by ‘little guy’. For a company with €1.5Billion in revenue per quarter they sure are having a whinge.

Has anyone tried the new-ish Tidal Hi-Fi with MQA tracks? (Master Quality Authenticated)
Put the app on my iPhone and iMac with a 30day free trial of the HiFi subscription and its pretty impressive.
HiFi is relatively expensive at $23.99 a month but man the sound coming out of it is awesome. It’s a big upgrade over the standard compressed formats- even on iPhone.
Premium is more in line with the competition at $11.99 a month.
I’ve been playing the high res files all day in the office at home, wow I’m impressed. Not sure if I’m $24 a month impressed though.
And to follow it up I’ve found a free service where you can synchronise playlists from different streaming services!!!
soundiiz.com
Free means you can only do one playlist at a time but it’s working.

I expect you know, but Tidal HiFi (which I use) is CD quality, not HiRes.
The MQA can be better, if you have the right arrangements to unpack it and then have a suitable DAC.

you could do that with the iphone, but think about whether the improvement is worth the hassle and attachments to the phone.
I've used an original dragonfly, and it was cool - for a while.
I've used a separate oppo dac/battery which works really well, but it is big and bulky.
The download is likely to be bigger with MQA, for small end benefit with an iphone but higher downloads.
At home, MQA seems a better proposition, as you have done with the iMac.
If you succeed with the iphone, let us know what you did.
My wife and I download Tidal to the phone at home for use away from home - that works well but it does use storage on the phone, so don't go berserk with the catalogue of downloads.

Thanks Benje, you’re right about the hassle when on the phone. I’ve got 29 more days to try a few things out and see if I really get the value out of it.

I have had times when the settings get stuffed, and I'm listening to 'standard' and not 'hifi' which is CD.
I have so much hi-res at home, but am happy to listen to cd quality streaming on my main system.
The important thing is to be listening to reasonable quality music (not low bit-rate mp3).
Ease of use with good quality trumps hard to use with better quality IMO.
Of course, my ears are a lot older than yours, and so you might hear more difference than I can now.
Enjoy the music.
ps if you don't already visit darko audio (an Australian now living in Germany) - that is www.darko.audio You will get everything happening with portable digital audio of quality and ease
Funny you say that- the Darko review of the Dragonfly Cobalt and how it integrates with the iPad and Roon/Tidal is what prompted me to try Tidal
Btw I thought he was a Pom? I suppose the accent is a mongrel hybrid.
I’m by no means an audiophile snob I’ll listen to anything and everything (it’s definitely more about the music) but it is definitely more enjoyable listening to high quality recordings. I’ve got a pretty solid high res library built up at home as I eveloped an addiction to the HD Tracks store a few years back.
I’ve been an Apple Music subscriber since it launched and to be honest the simplicity with it is the best thing ever. This tidal gig even at CD quality is really impressive.
Great in the car
Great on the Mac
Great on the iPhone
Amazing on the main system
Question for you Benje, do you use or have you tried ROON?
With my fairly large digital library I’m really digging the service especially combined with Tidal. I’ve got a trial period but as a streaming ‘add-on’ partner for want of a better word it’s awesome.
ROON - no. I have 'friends' who love it, but I haven't seen it in action yet.
Might see it if i go to a GTG again soon.
Not keen at this stage though, too much going on.
