Went and had a look at the Aust PGA event today. Haven't been to RQ since the redevelopment and did enjoy the old course when I had played it previously. Could not fault the condition of the course - didn't notice any flaws in the way the course was presented - except for the small stones in the bunkers [not sure what that is about...]. Greens look pretty evil, might be fun to play on the first time though...Nice to see a mix of different hole types and decisions for golfers to consider on holes.
Only issue for me [and this is based on being an observer and not a player] was that the course is aesthetically quite ugly - the bunkering especially, and it struck me that it all seemed a like a bit of fakery and pretend and it wasn't a real course...[in the links way]...from some perspectives it looked like Redcliffe GC - and that is not a good review...In saying all that my opinion may change after playing the new design - but on the strength of today it was a bit meh...

To be fair, RQ has never claimed to be a links course. It's just something different on the boring-est piece of golf land in Australia.

It is very interesting to play especially after a few rounds (ie u know where u r going and what trouble lies ahead) when u realise that despite the massive width, you need to position your shot if you want to get at the pin. Some very challenging greens if you are out of position. Forget the rough cut looking bunkers (do bunkers have to be all circular blobs?) and look at the strategy!

Other than 18 which is deceptively challenging it’s pretty much point and shoot.

Very simplistically way of playing the course is look at which side of the green a pin is cut and try to hit your drive as close as possible to the same side edge of the fairway. With all of the spines down the middle of greens it’s sucker golf in a lot of ways.

I've watched a bit of this over the last few days, and I'm watching as I type.
Fortunately for this TV viewer, it doesn't appear to be point and shoot, and the players actually need to allow for some bounce and release on the greens. It is much more interesting golf.
The thing I like the most is the closely mown edges around the greens, which means there is a genuine penalty if the player attacks a tucked pin and misses. Is that the normal set up?

Closely mown surrounds make for pretty uncomplicated ups and downs with the putter.

i have to agree with SMS.it has as much strategy as any of the sandbelt courses. Of course, if you don’t know where your shots r going, strategy is irrelevant.

Only played it once, and played total crap.
Loved the course, can't wait to tackle it again now my game is starting to come together. Interesting greens, strategic tee shots, no lost balls, what's not to love about it?

Seems to be a lot of locals doing well.

If it was a simple point-n-shoot layout you'd think that local strategy wouldn't be as advantageous. And yet here we are.
