West Lakes has a little place in hell for me because it is the course where all our disaffected Royal North Haven members go. They go in droves and filter back over time on account it's twice as expensive, much tighter and 100x more crowded. Had about 8 of our Members leave for there end of last season on account of the condition of our course (bore was basically pumping up seawater).

HP: In terms of 'bang for buck' I certainly would not become a member that is for sure. $1,750 joining fee + $2,471 for a tier 2 is delusional. It would be interesting if any new members actually pay the joining fee considering (on promotion and/or you push the needle enough) you can join any other tier 2 for zero.

(like Benje suggested) The course appeals to the seniors/retirees; they do not hit it far enough to venture too wide + it's flat and easy to walk.

Bear in mind Crafter has done a fair amount of work to the layout over the last 5 or so years

I wouldn't say heaps good as per thread title but I'm happy to put Willunga it in the good course category.
The amount of trees separating fairways could do with a bit of thinning as there is more than enough foliage at the top to help stop wayward shots crossing onto other holes which would have been a reason for the initial over zealous plantings.
I'd be happy to go back for another game.

I really enjoyed yesterdays game at Willunga as I think it more suits my style. Short and straight.
The holes around the lakes and creek crossings I like also. Greens were very large and and fairly true. Could hold multiple flag locations. Some Par 3's would differ 30m in distance.
Can't believe I have always driven past.

Willunga has some good land and a selection of holes to match. Clear highlight for me was #6 the short 4 through the barranca.

Sure it needs some tree clearing, but many of the holes have parallel fairways squeezed against each other. Combine that with a high quantity of social golfer demographic and you have a huge potential for liability.

We have similar issues at TTG (holes 10-14) but clearing the trees would do the same thing

    *** Kooyonga UPDATE ***

Just a quick update. After a year of works the newly renovated clubhouse will be handed back to the club today and car park to returned to normal operation yesterday. Landscaping around the clubhouse is now being finalised.

13 green has now been back in play for a few weeks now after a full refresh. 17 tee block has now become vastly more open to the left with the northern clubhouse extension.

And most importantly the wine room is ready and operational

How is that new #17 green playing Chilled? and how does it compare to the previous version

Well the green itself wasn't re-contoured, it's exactly the same as previous, but without the poa The water feature has been remodeled complete with rock wall as you would know, and I've been told was expanded slightly towards the front so even less forgiving now. It certainly looks more ominous than it used to for the unsighted second shot. Now pretty much if you don't get the ball up on the line of the pin (sat/wed pin) you're gone. Most players are almost purposefully pulling to the left to avoid the water, which sometimes puts them on the new left dunes/fescu which is problem enough.

I've just had a tour of the new clubhouse, amazing, I'm gobsmacked. I see what 8million gets you, it's incredible. I didn't realise how extensive it was going to be. The place feels huge now.

Hard to appreciate in pictures but I'll see if I can get some pics uploaded.

Some parts are receiving finishing touches. The glass cabinets with trophies need putting in, more furniture is needed in hallways and conference rooms, finishing touches are being put in most rooms so tradies gear is still sitting around. Clubhouse now has surround views of the course which is a lot better than previous. Unfortunately I forgot to get a pic of the main guest entry but it's quite nice now. Plenty of pictures need to be hung and ornaments placed. But overall you get the idea.

Amazing, once that entrance garden gets done, it will be the finishing crown.

On another subject, anyone played Tanunda Pines recently?

Not since I departed, I will note they have lost a number of good pennant players recently who (ironically) have all followed me to TTG.

Chilled: impressive clubhouse, perhaps you could host a round and give us a personal tour so we can all experience it first hand....

Im personally keen to play/try that #17 hole now with the new wall at the front of the pond

Quite happy to return the favour and show you our new #9 hole, from the same designer

I was a bit gobsmacked, I didn't realise the changes to the clubhouse were so comprehensive. Just shame it had to come around covid times.

We haven't done visitors since covid hit and not for the foreseeable future either apparently. I think it's possibly a bit harsh considering other clubs have visitors, but that's their policy right now. They are also trying to scale back the number of rounds per year to maintain course condition so not having visitors is another way of helping that also I guess.

Finished a 3 day trip down south today. Played:
    Mt Compass
    South Lakes (Goolwa)
    Victor Harbour

Compass presented really well as usual, both fairways and greens in excellent condition. It really is one of the best and most enjoyable courses in SA, especially outside the big metro courses.

South Lakes fairway condition was quite good. The greens were cored recently and are a little slow and bumpy.

Victor Harbour greens were in excellent condition, the best of the 3 courses played, however the fairways were a little patchy. I'm no grass expert but the fairways are nowhere near as nice as Compass or South Lakes.

South Lakes put in Santa Ana following the drought, because of better tolerance to saline water from the Murray. Hence better fairways.

Mt Compass was built late 1990's, it was a bit cool initially when planted so couch took a while to take (back nine was built later and has better coverage). Front nine has a mix of grasses which work well. Plenty of good bore water at Mt Compass.

Victor Harbor has a mix of common couch and winter grass. It works well, except when there is drought or extreme heat, which is rare.
Not sure whether the recent two day heat wave affected Victor or not - if fairways are patchy that could be it.
I think Victor is irrigated from the nearby river/Victor treatment works. Not certain though.

Interesting Benje, thanks.I found Compass and South lakes to have a bit thicker and lusher fairways too vs Victor.

I played McCracken for the first time today. I thoroughly enjoyed the layout, conditioning was just not there though.

It very seldom is - and the 18th sucks! (especially when it is windy)

Played Pt Hughes (Copper Club), last week whilst up that way for work. Pretty good nick but as it was blowing 30 knots, coming back was pretty tough.

7 years ago today I went there, remember the 4am alarm well! From what I remember it was a good course, and it was a bit windy that day too. Don't reckon that second nine will ever happen now, no-one with any sense is going to invest that much money in it.

I have only played it once, was blowing a gale and remember the proshop advising that they had two flags snap from the wind. The land is nothing special and the course is pretty Norman esk. Perhaps will make the trip again sometime but in no hurry.
