When are the supporters ever happy with the selections?
It is an impossible job but they are doing it very poorly at the moment.
Its a interesting one - how much leeway do you want to give a selection panel, because if all you are going to use is averages you don't need a panel - you need a spreadsheet.
It is going back a bit now, but using county stats would not have picked Trescothick and Vaughan for England at the times they were picked (as both had modest records at the time). You want your selection panel to be able to identify and fast track someone, but you want them to be accountable when they get it wrong. For that, you need to be able to tell whether they have made a failure of judgement, or whether the judgement was sound, but the execution of that player was the problem.
The problem is more with the transparency (to the public at least) around the reasons someone like say Labuschagne or MMarsh is picked, and someone like Maxwell/Wade/Burns (who do have some stats to back them up) is not. When things aren't going well, that's how you then start to work out whether the problem is the players are out of form vs bad plans, i.e. coaching influence vs bad selections in the first place.
In this series I think there's been a bit of all 3. That said, I don't think there are any different selections that Australia could have made that would have ultimately changed the series result...
Perfect time to change everything, coaching, junior development , Sheffield cricket , scheduling , selectors just to name a few .
Best thing to come of the last nine months is this series flogging , I hope we get a few more
I was really keen to see how our bats went today with spots and possibly careers on the line. Labuschagne looked quite solid technically in the first innings when the ball started to reverse and it would have been nice to see him in action again. Would have been a good test for Head too. He's compiled some runs but needs some improvement both technically and mentally if he's to last long. Single figures for Marsh may have made it almost impossible for the selectors to pick him again. Another dig would have been good for Handscomb to push as well. He looked really good in the first dig before getting out in a disappointing way. Harris looked good most of the series and seems to learn as well. He could well be Warner's opening partner by the time he is back. He needs to learn to go on with an innings tho.
The selectors may as well sleep in their bed now they've made it and keep Harris, Kwaka, Labuschagne, Head and Handscomb going against the much much friendlier Sri Lankan attack. They can get rid of Marsh and give someone else a go as well. If they are still at full mast for an allrounder give someone with a bit of spine a go like Stoinis. If they want a look at another youngster Patterson might be in the mix. Wade is the dominant Shield bat of those not playing the Tests with near 600 runs at 63. Realistically our best batting lineup is probably something like Harris-Burns-Kwaka-Head/Handscomb-Maxwell-Wade. We really are thin on the ground.
They surely need to take a swing bowler to England and now would be the time to ease him in for a game. Tremain and Sayers might be in the mix and there are others in the mix like Boland and Richardson. We also have Pattinson to come in at some point. The First Test is a night Test and would be absolutely ideal to throw in one of those guys especially given a couple of our quicks aren't at their very best. Pattinson might be ready by the second.
Nothings certain with the selectors tho that's for sure.

Examining that post again jim either spends 2 seconds reading other people's posts or is a master troll. Imagine suggesting that I'm a mitch marsh advocate.
Sorry, meant to come back earlier. It's curious for sure tho he's been bowling extremely well. Perhaps he is part of their plans for the world Cup. He's pretty well suited to the conditions. There's also a good chance he is part of their Ashes plans. Maybe they are looking for that mix of experience? Even if he didn't end up playing a lot of games he might be good for the youngsters?
They've made mistakes with him before and Cummins/Starc/Hazlewood probably isn't the best balanced combo in Ashes conditions over there.

Pattinson looked good last night 👍
He did say he was taking it slowly so might be too soon for him to be fully fit but jees he hit the track hard
He really needs to prove he can get through a shield game or four before he can be seriously considered.
Pattinson has been aiming for the Ashes. With no Shield until after the Sri Lanka Tests he probably won't get a gig but I'd be tempted to give him a burl in the 2nd even with a common sense plan in place. Odds against it I guess.
Rumours swirling about our squad for the Sri Lanka Tests. Talk of Pucovski being in favour and Burns as well. Whispers both Marsh's are out of favour and Stoinis being heavily considered. Here's to hoping.
