Back to your question.
I agree with AndyP, it might be a case of too much too early. give it a rest and see how you go. But there is something else you can try.
Without wanting to be too blunt. If you're just starting out (maybe carrying a little extra weight?) you are probably shuffling more than running/jogging. This puts a lot of stress on the calves. Try breaking up your stride a little with a run/walk, run/jog program. Most documented programs for newbies (including the couch to 5km) start this way. It helps to stretch the lower leg mucsles and gets you running further, quicker.
Enjoy it, it becomes addictive once you get past the initial pain.
Have to say, the whole cramping thing disappeared after I wrote the question.
And yes - it is addictive already, especially when I can see real results in only 2 weeks (although that could be due to the very low platform from where I started).
Well thank god that is over, today I finished the Eco challenge at my gym.
All up I completed the following - 400km on the bike, 300km on the X-Trainer, 150km on the treadmill & 100km on the rower.
I had 12 weeks to complete the above but did it in 4 weeks
Sore?
Supprisingly not, the first 2 weeks was a real slog but buy the last week I was flying through the km's. My heart rate would sit around 160bpm in the first week and buy the last, it would barely get above 145bpm.
I am going to keep going but just not going to rack up as many km's
I don't have a heart.
I've never tracked it. I just run.
I don't get that movie. It just wasn't funny to me.
A few of his movies aren't in general.
I can't back out of my first half marathon now. I paid up for it today. There's less than a week to go, so I'll probably have just the two more lunch runs, plus touch footy on Monday and a walk Saturday morning.
The time I am aiming for is 1:43:46 , but I've got no idea if I can do it. Finishing will be great, but I'd like to beat 1:50 first time around.
Good luck to you Andy, just enjoy the experience and have fun with it.
I had my first run in 5 weeks yesterday. Nothing too big and adventurous, just taking it easy and trying to ease my way back into. The last thing I want to do now is aggravate my ankle, but I just couldn't sit on my arse any longer.
They've been announcing it on the radio up here for 3 weeks now, 3 times a day.
'The bridge to brisbane is on on september 7. Nominations are now closing on the 22nd of august. go to............'
Every day, 3 times a day. What else am I spose to think. The radio don't lie!!
And feeling really good for the B2B in a few weeks! Have a lovely cold, lungs are crapped and I'm sucking down ventalin and pulmicort. Slept in the lounge chair last night 'cause I cough my lungs up lying down. I'll be running this very easy now 'cause I dont' know how much or effective running I'll get before then!
Got my kit today, including my post race bus ticket to get back to the start line which will be a problem since I was leaving it at the finish and taking the pre race bus. Emailed them tonight about that...
Run your arse of AP!!! (probably is already)
Yep, he's done. I'll let him reveal his time....
Wow! That was one of my most satisfying experiences.
Not only did I meet my (what I thought was ambitious) goals, I smashed them. The official nett times won't be out until tonight, but I crossed the line (gun time) in around 1h38m50s. That should have my nett somewhere around 1:38. Certainly not what I was expecting in my first half marathon.
I started out slow and just aimed to keep the 1:40 pace runner balloons in sight for as long as possible. I initially dropped a good distance back from them, but I just seemed to get faster as the race went on, or maybe it was everyone else slowing down..... It was a complete surprise to catch up and pass the 1:40 pace runner at around 20.5k, then hear him say that he was running at about 1:39.
I'm not sure where to go to from here. I hadn't even contemplated running a half marathon before this year.
