Shanks easily.
Tops will generally go on the line you were aiming, and give you another shot at your target with only a lost shot.
Shanks go nowhere near the line you want, and generally leave you stuck in the trees or worse.
Tops: nothing worse than pulling out a 7 iron and hitting it along the ground. On a par three that means you didnt even reach the fairway
I'd easily hit 100 tops to 1 shank. Shanks are so hard to hit - that hosel is only 1cm wide, you gotta be a really good golfer to hit a shank.
I'd rather top it over the green than shank it oob. I bet there have been more holes-in-one from tops than shanks!
what about hitting it fat...
i'd rather top it 100m down the fairway, than hit it fat and have the divot go further than the ball :S
Definitely shanks. At least tops go in the right general direction.
Shanks.... I've never topped a chip !!!
... a chilly dip chip or a full swing duff is more demoralising than both the shank and top.
I played with a guy who topped his drive today, he almost hit himself and it went 2 feet !
I would have said he would have prefered a shank (is that possible with driver ?) but he still made bogey. I suppose at least a top goes straight
I think a top or flub is probably equally as bad as a shank..
Interestingly, I made par on the 10th at Pac Harbour earlier this year after shanking my approach. Come to think of it, most of my shanks were only half-shanks so the ball was still advancing forwards some distance. Just aim 30degrees left and you can get around with a shank.
haha - i did something like that, playing with schoolmate and a couple of our teachers (of all people), i had an airswing with my driver on the tee. They laughed their tits off. Still parred the hole and probably beat them all
shanks definitely.
tops at least go straight and you sometimes get lucky
you never get a lucky shank

Shanks buy a country mile!!
But what about topping into water hazards, gardens, bushes etc that are in front of you - a shank could mean you could go around them

i went to do some chipping practice tonight. had about 8 shanks, most of them in a row. No damage done, except had the others around the green dancing around a bit.
Dare i say it but if you really have a case of the shanks you give it away been ther done that. What about the yips i reckon they would be even more frustrating

There is nothing worse than missing the hole on a straight putt from 1 foot, and not getting within 2 inches of the hole! But I don't have the shanks or the tops, and never have really so what do I know!
Can we add a third option - "whiffs", for Popper?
Forum needs more banter.
Ahhhhhh the memories. I visited the the Shankri-La a handful of times a couple of years back. On two consecutive Saturday comps i had shanks O.B. on the same hole after good drives. I think i had an O.B. elsewhere too. In practise i was hitting numerous, what a cancer. Steepened my iron swing and may not have hit one since. The good old lagging hosel vs sweetspot.

Depends what type of shank, I have developed a type of power shank, the ball squirts right but still travels 170-180m with a 3 iron. I hit one down wind at National (Moonah) last year on 15, was trying to hit a little draw down the left, ended up 60m right of where I aimed, mate said, "good lay up"
