If I understand the outrage, my kids can play on monkey bars but if they invite Goodes' kids to play with them they should use the description "playground equipment" or they're evil racists.

Yes I have TNO. But only for about 10 years in places like Rochampton, Townsville and Darwin. As well as working at places like Blackwater and Winton. Also did a few years in the reserves up north so worked with at times plenty of the locals. So probably not much opportunity to be around aborigines.

    Funny stuff 3PP.

I was discussing what will become of the classic childhood rendition of Happy Birthday (You look like a monkey and smell like one too) in the fallout of this event just yesterday.

I didn't think school playgrounds had monkey bars any more anyway - too dangerous. I broke my arm in primary school after falling off a set, that school had the monkey bars removed in subsequent years and I heard plenty of other schools in QLD did the same...

I too have never heard Ape being used as a racial slur. Certainly used to describe large football players of questionable intelligence.

Perhaps you were in some fine upstanding circles, area's or age groups. Or were never ingrained enough.

I've got a top mate from out round the area, he and his family lived in a surrounding area until after those years. I'll make some enquiries as to the likelihood of you encountering the phrase out that way. That's a fair way out in the back blocks, could have been a bit too suburban for them.

Just to get things straight, you're not saying you didn't come across loads of racist terms out there right?

Just the normal ones. I will admit though that in Rocky, Townsville and Darwin the townsfolk had nothing but the utmost respect for those that chose to spend their days on the riverbank, under the bridge or in the long grass.

Ok. There's some heat on them recently as some dwelling on the river bank have taken to abusing passing workers as they go to their cars etc. Been a couple of incidents. It seems impossible to stop the drinking and dwelling in public places for any length of time.

Kiwitown, your forebearers, the Scots and the Irish have never covered themselves in glory on the "ape/monkey" front.

I lived in the UK in the late 80's, a guy called Mark Walters went to play at Rangers, Celtic fans threw bananas at him and he was abused racially. Was quite common throughout England as well, my 2nd team was Leyton Orient, inner east of London, lots of black players, I remember Nottingham fans throwing bananas as well.
