average national wage is also skewed by the much higher wages in Sydney/Melbourne. We live on a lot less income in Qld especially outside Brisbane. All those IT workers we have around at Ozgolf would get at least 40% more in sydney automatically.
i get to see a lot of peoples salaries in my job, and its pretty common to see a something like the bloke earning 50k and the wife earning $20k and looking after the kids. With an average mortgage they are living quite comfortably in the $400k home.

Bugger the average wage - a year ago Rob and I were under what was considered the poverty line! That felt stupid since we weren't starving. Rob's certainly closer to the average than me. Although when we go the bank next week to get some money to move that might not be the case! Books to be done

Who told you that BS? That may have been the case 3 years ago, but the Brisbane IT market is the strongest in the country. Even the Goldcast is booming with good rates.
And I know this first hand as I scored a contract with Golflink in Sydney about 3 months ago and what they were offering was about 60% of Brisbane rates.

I really think bringing out a stat like average wages is pointless. Whats the average wage in Broken Hill or Timbuktoo ?
Bring out a stat for average wages in capital cities and then compare to the national average, I'm sure the differences would be glaring.

In AFL news a Western Bulldogs rookie steps on a stingray on Port Philip Bay this morning. The irony with this news is that he was recruited from one of the TAC under 18 competition teams, the Dandenong Stingrays................what are the chances

agreed (even though you're talking about contract-scum). Even salaries are pretty much line-ball between the three major cities. I was actually on less money when I worked in sydney, despite paying more rent for a shittier flat.

haha. You do realise this thread is "News of Today". You'll have to search for the "News of 3 years ago" thread.
oh yeah, interest rates are no longer at a 30 year low as well. That might be handy in your line of work.

Just as a general comment I was amazed that the average wage in Australia is $60k. Sounds like a pretty good wicket for the average punter these days.

We have to remember the top end drags the average up and the bottom end drags it down too. I know many people not on the average wage.
The big numbers change it more as there is no limit, the bottom does have a limit.

i think it's all a bit of an ego thing - regardless of what i get i recon i'd want a little more - but the end of the day quality of life is factored on more than just weekly wage.

Is there an echo in here?
It's includes all fulltime workers on salaries or wages, with some exceptions.
If you want more details, go straight to the source:
http://www.abs.gov.au/ausstats/abs@.nsf/mf/6302.0
There's a pdf in there with full details and breakdowns, including states or industries.
NSW and Vic average higher salaries than Qld.

I'll admit to looking in every estate agent's window I go past this week.
