    Default Iron advice needed.

I have been playing golf on and off for 15 years but am just getting back into the swing of things. I now play at least once a week but am struggling to get my handicap of 23 down.

I have decided my 15 year old Cougar irons are past their use by date and need replacing. There is about $1000 in the kitty and I am contemplating some of the following iron sets -

    Mizuno Mx-19
    Nike Ignite's
    Nike Slingshot OSS

    Any advice.

    Welcome Chopper.

In my experience, the quality of the Nike's leaves a bit to be desired. You can't go wrong with Mizzie's, though.

I am definitely tending to lean in that direction although there may be something else out there to look at. There are lots of demo days coming up near me but I am just trying to narrow the field a little to reduce confusion on my part.

I would go for the ignites over the slingshots, because atleast the ignites resemble actual golf clubs. Rory Sabbatini also uses these so you can't go wrong. I prefer the mx-25s over the mx-19s, but thats just my opinion. Any set of pings should also be thrown into the mix as well, an extremely forgiving and popular choice, maybe have a look at the new g10s or even the rapture or i5 irons. With $1k you choice is limitless, well depending on where you buy, but you can get anything on the market for less than than $1k from the states. There's so much choice these days and everyone producing quality clubs, you can simply pick a brand you like and they'll probably have something that fits what you need. In the end it'lc ome down to what feels right. Go down to the shop and try as many as you can.

The slingshots are definitely a little on the "CHUNKY" side for my liking. Powergolf in Alexandria, Sydney, also has Callaway X-18's for $800 so they are a possibility as well.

I would think a good set of 2nd hand i3's or i3+'s would set you back $500 or $600. And in 10 years time, regardless of how much you played or whether you used iron covers on them or not, they will look exactly the same as the day you bought them. Nearly new. They are pretty much indestructable.

If you wanted to go even more forgiving you could look for a set of G2's. But if you want more of a players forgiving club go for the i3 oversizes.

3Balls are selling them brand new 3-PW for US $500, so their Ebay auctions would probably go for a bit less

This seller is good too and has brand new sets.

I'd be going for Pings....get yourself fit for a set and find out what colour dot you need then buy em on Ebay.

Ping. That way at least if the ho bug bites, you can get your money back on them pretty easily. The i5 and i3 are pretty decent. Oh, and buy off ebay or online from the states. Please don't pay retail for Pings!

You have got rocks in your head if you lay out a grand on anything off the shelf, whether that be Nike, Ping, Callaway, or whatever.

Couldn't agree more. I suggested them to a friend of mine who'd just bought some Mizuno MP30's but was worried they were "a bit off". $45 for a full launch monitor and lie board fitting session including lie, loft, length and grip size and adjustments made accordingly. He couldn't be happier with the service.

How much were the Mizuno's out by? my brother had a set of custom made titliests and every club had different swingweights, flex and lofts were all over the shop,

some examples were 1 degree difference between 9 iron and wedge, and flex ranging from R to XXS (almost off the scale)

I didn't get the chance to ask. He spotted me at woolies and sang out to thank me for the recommendations. I'd assume he would have needed lie angles changed from standard as he's taller than me and he mentioned the grips being wrong too. Even for lie & loft and fitting, $45 is a bargain. I doubt he'd have gotten shaft extensions or grips or anything in that though.

Chopper, I have hit a variety of good cavity back irons like the Ping's & Callaway's and they are very easy to hit plus as others have stated they hold their value.
Might be time to get myself some more forgiving irons as well

unless they have changed. its $45 to just check every thing and tell you what they should be using on a nice card. its another $5 a club for bulk changes eg lie angle, unless its just the odd loft tweak.

yep, $45 for lie & loft adjustments. $75 for full fitting. The fitting cost comes off the price of anything you buy through them though.
