Default Any TDF fans out there?

Morning everyone - any other Ozgolfers watching the Tour de France?

I've been watching the start, then recording the rest and watching them when we get home from work.

Anyway - big news in today's paper - Vinokurov's tested positive for blood doping after the time trial (and he had a strange "perfect" day in the mountains) - the entire Astana team is out!

Amanda - I've been watching before I go to bed, and all week he has been struggling to stay with the peleton. On Monday night, the toughest and most mountainous stage yet, he wins. Alarm bells had to be ringing.

But he's not only a drug cheat - apparently he had a blood transfusion!!

If you watched last year, the yellow-jersey wearer did much the same. Almost failed to finish one day, beat the field by 10-15 minutes the next. Morons.

Yeah - it was very suss with Floyd Landis last year.

It's a shame because Kloden was doing quite well.

It will also be interesting to see what happens out of the Rassmussen debacle with 2 non-appearances at drug tests.

I love listening to Brad's interpretation of the french names for the mountains - the Col de Peyresourde = Col of Pair of Swords

How can anyone take this sport seriously with the amount of positive drug tests?

You could say the same about players in the AFL/NFL using drugs (albeit recreational), or the match-fixing scandals going on in the NBA at the moment.

I watch because those who don't use drugs, deserve to be supported. Mind you - look at those who have been caught - Americans, Kazakstanian - those countries the culture of "win at all costs" is probably a lot more conducive to doping than the Australian culture with is a lot more "zero tolerance on drugs".

I feel for Oscar Pererio Sio - last year's 2nd place - but he'll never be elevated to first.

the whole 'elevated testosterone levels' thing is a joke. Unless you test positive to something, or they find synthetic testosterone - then as far as I'm concerned you're innocent.

As many people have said before, there are hundreds of reasons why your natural levels of testosterone can be elevated.

Rub the blokes out that test positive and leave the other guys alone, how anyone can say with a straight face that Armstrong was doping when he was the most tested athlete in sporting history, obviously also believes in UFO's and God.

I don't so much watch it. I used to be a fan of the old 'wide world of sports' coverage, back in the days when it was a 12pm to 5pm show, with maxie and that old afl codger.

Anyway, there were two events every year I just couldn't wait for. One was the Tour de France. During the other stories on the show they would have many segments on the Tour from that week. Just really enjoyed the format and coverage. You'd often get like 6 or 7 mini stories of it during the show.

The other was the Hawaii Ironman. Those guys are freaks. I never realised how much I missed my saturday arvo's watching wwos with my dad.

They should just forget about testing for drugs in this "sport". Instead, supply everyone with the same drugs, and watch them strategically use them throughout the 3 weeks. Every drug MUST be used by the finish line!

It would be just like the F1 and their pit stops. Riders would have to make the choice on a rainy day down the mountain to either smoke a spliff, relax, and enjoy the scenery, or load up on testosterone, and get the **** outta there!

Now that would be good viewing, and it wouldn't take all night!

German TV has packed up and gone home. I think there will be less coverage in the future years if they don't stamp out doping, and the event will run into financial ruin.

No way - how am I going to get my annual dose of cycling speak with Phil and Paul?

Honestly - when Matthew Keenan is providing commentary, I couldn't care less. But love listening to Phil and Paul.

    Amanda,

You and I are on the same page, and I'm not a Ford Fairlane fan either, so I don't know the joke.

I love the Tour. I believe the TV coverage is just about the best and most comprehensive of any sporting event. The camerawork is sensational, and so is the background scenery of France.

Paul and Phil are the best commentators in any sport on the planet.

Having said all that, the greed of the european teams and riders is killing the sport. I'd like to think it is fair contest where the best team or best rider wins, but gee it is hard to keep the faith.

I'd like to think Vinikourov is innocent, and there was some irregularity that can explain his result. I wanted to believe Floyd Landis too. But I can't. It does seem that the best cheat wins much of the time.

Dont care if they r juiced up or not - i'd like to see them get rid of the team cars and ear pieces so that they have to ride the race themselves and not be told when to push and when not to. The rider should decide not a strategist in the car

I agree about the ear pieces! And if team cars were mechanical issues only.
