Diesel can be more fuel efficient. However, diesel usually costs more at the pump, and diesel variants usually cost more to purchase up front, so unless you are doing big kms, you won't really get much monetary benefit from going diesel over petrol (assuming the model you're looking at has both options). Personally though, I like the current range of diesels. Plenty of torque at low revs. Perfect if you are going to be doing any regular towing, or perhaps carrying a few sandbags around.

Also bear in mind modern diesels (well at least all the euro ones I've owned) do need a good drive at highway speeds every so often to burn off particulate matter from the exhaust system.

But yes they are usually more efficient in a L/100km sense, the trade off is that fuel is a bit dearer at the bowser than regular unleaded and servicing costs may be a tiny bit high than a petrol engine so it all evens out. And yes, they're torquey so you don't need a lot of power to be able to pull hard up steep hills etc.

Someone once suggested to me that diesel doesn't tend to suffer from the price fluctuations that petrol does - I must admit I've never paid enough attention to the price when filling up to test that theory.

I know its UK based (pounds and miles) but the link below gives a pretty simple comparison of diesel vs petrol consumption/savings over 30,000 miles(48,000 kms) across a range of vehicles just to give you an idea. I didn't read it all word for word, but the images/graphs show the comparison pretty well.

    Default Cars: Keep or Renew?

I did a comparison when I bought the Skoda, from memory it worked out I'd have to do 15k kms a year for the diesel to be cheaper.

You probably won't be better off - but running costs aren't the only reason to go that way.

Bang on Ben. I wish I could have been this succinct rather than rambling on. For my latest car, I opted for a slightly lower spec options-wise just so I could get the turbo diesel while keeping it within a certain price limit.

Just on Gumtree and there are brand new cars with light hail damage for $7k but no rego. What is the catch with these?
I think you can't get insurance, but it just doesn't seem quite right.

From the recent storms? I imagine the car's written off, insurer pays the dealer (or Hyundai if it hasn't even made it to the dealer) and one of them is trying to get some money back.

Or a private buyer bought it for $5k under the same arrangement and is trying to make a bit of coin.

I am in the middle of this dilemma also. Whether to upgrade or stick with the crappy Focus. Since warranty finished it's costing me between 1-2 thousand a year on repairs, surely that's going to end soon ! I considered buying a Kia Rio for 14k with 7 year warranty. But that is probably more than what I would likely pay in repairs over 7 years and its s flippin micro car.

I wish I never sold the EH.

I would say you're on the money with the latter. The same advertiser has a Hyundai and a Mitsubishi advertised. Both brand new, both unregistered, both hail damaged. Perhaps they even bought them at auction and then found out what was actually required to get them registered and on the road. Not sure in QLD, but in WA the vehicles would need to have a roadworthy inspection carried out and depending on whether the vehicles had been added to the "Written off vehicle register" they may require additional inspections/engineers reports to confirm they are safe to be registered. Even if it is only minor hail damage, these may be the sort of hoops you would have to jump through to get them registered. And yes, getting insurance could be an issue. You would most likely only be able to get third party property if anything as some insurance companies won't insure an unrepaired hail damaged vehicle.

    Caveat emptor!

So ballpark what would the on road costs be -road worthy etc. excluding the damage repair?
Considering its hail damaged its only going to be panel damage right?

All this discussion re: buying new cars makes me a sad panda as I'm stuck at the cross roads of spending 2-3K on replacing the cooked motor in the Commo Wagon or borrow a lot more money and replace the car .

Seven years ago, NRMA paid $8k to fix hail damage to my Forester.

They wanted to write the neighbours 1988 Corolla off for $2-3k, but the neighbours did a deal to keep it, as it was mechanically perfect. One condition was that it couldn't be comprehensively insured, but they were able to get 3rd party property cover only (in addition to the NSW compulsory third party personal).

Glad to see it didn't get missed.

I would be in awe if you were getting around off 0.5 while dragging an anchor. I dare say you would be elsewhere, earning some nice coin from golf, and trying to decide which model prestige Euro to buy, rather than asking chumps such as myself for advice on buying a dual cab ute!
