    Default TV tuner cards??

Does anyone know much about tv tuner cards? Recently got a sd stb from p.i.l. for xmas and am loving it so far. Our analogue reception was pretty bad after the recent storms (read: unwatchable) so it's like a whole new world for us.

I've noticed that some are pretty cheap these days. Having both our computers in our lounge/dining it wouldn't be too hard for us to hook everything up together so we could record to the hd and watch on tv. Anyways, I don't know much about them and certainly don't know what's good, what features to look for.

I've read that some do p.i.p. so would that also mean we could watch one channel while taping another. Am I going down the wrong track with this idea.

In the long run I would see us having a dual tuner hdpvr, but they are still expensive. And while we still have the computers in the same area as our lounge could this be the cheaper way to go for now?

It's not something we're planning on doing tomorrow, or next month - but it may come down the track, especially when we upgrade the 'puter again.

Wait for a couple of weeks until the new model Mac Mini is released.
Sources claim an Intel-based Mac mini will make an appearance at MacWorld San Francisco in January. Expected to be included in the update, other than the move to Intel processor:

    • Front Row 2.0
    • "TiVo-Killer" DVR application
    • Built-In iPod Dock
    • Possible move to 3.5" hard drive

Whether the DVR capability comes standard on the mini or as an add-on module is unknown.
For the uninitiated, the Mac Mini is an entire computer in a tiny package. You can even plug in your existing PC monitor, mouse & keyboard. Current models start at $799 including the oh so secure, stable & sexy Mac OSX operating system.

Are looking at an Analogue or Digital capture card. I know heaps about analogue but havent ventured into digital yet, mostly becuase its really easier now to let someone else capture it and download it from them.

obviously a digital card will be better for you, but I am sure you would need a high end CPU, like at least 1.5gb processer. Cost is about $100 starting price.

HD Digital in particular. Seems many now do analogue, sd and hd. About $100 does seem to be the starting, but I don't know much about brands etc or particular features.

Goughy, check out the forums at http://www.dba.org.au

I'm in the process of setting up my new computer and am investigating Digital Tuner Cards myself. They're all HD output which is a good thing.

Started at close to $300 and is now down to $209.Might pull the trigger when its under $200, or even if it drops another 5 bucks

I've wanted to buy a HDTV tuner for a while, but then i realised, I havent even hooked up my VCR for a couple of years, apart from football i doubt I watch TV even once a month.

Anything that i might watch its much easier to let some other sucker record it and get it off him

Seems to me that the quality of TV has declined in a big way in recent years. Anyone else feel the same way or am i the only one who hasnt been sucked in by reality tv or crime investigation?

House, Lost, Sport. That's about it for me, Blakey. Any other time in front of the TV is because I'm spending "quality" time with the missus.
