A lot of it rides on etiquette actually. If someone does something they know they shouldn't they can expect it. For example, the goalies are off limits, as are guys who are much smaller than you. So if a guy goes after a goalie or a big tough guy goes after a little guy, they can expect someone to get them. Things like cheap shots, getting the stick up in a guys face, running your gums.......They'll all tend to get you in the odd punch up.

Strategy also plays a role, sometimes when a team is down and nothing is going for them a guy will take one for the team and get in a tussle.....You'd be amazed how much a good fight (win or lose) will energize a team......

And sometimes guys just piss you off.

That first one is crazy. Broke his cheekbone, out for the rest of the year......[/quote]

Fedoruk's one tough SOB. He returned last week! Most likely wearing a shield of some sort. Don't think he'll be fighting anytime soon. Apparantly this is the second time he has had his face broken in a fight. Kinda reminds me of Nick Kypreos. All the heart but couldn't fight his way out of a wet paper bag. I remember wacthing a LEafs game a few years back. Kypreos fought, had his nose smashed, blood everywhere. He got fixed up, came back out, fought again, same results. He went after the guy AGAIN in the third (may have been Jim Cummins) and Cummins was shaking his head saying "No! Don't do it!" Third fight, Kypreos lying on the ice, bleeding everywhere.
It was no surprise that his career ended when he got knocked out and his head bounced off the ice, giving him a major concussion.

I'll see if I can find the clip..

one more classic. bob probert, one of the toughest of all time, coke addict, vs. marty mcsorely, a player who received a lifetime suspension for slashing another player in the head and knocking him out cold.

So, do these guys genuinely hate each other, or do they laugh about it after the game over a few beers?

I've only had one fight because I hated the guy.....It's left on the ice 99% of the time.

San Jose vs Phoenix tonight... 2 or 3 quick cheap shots and it's on! 5 on 5! The thing that stuns me is how quickly the ice is littered with gloves and sticks!! In the blink of an eye all fists are bare!!

When the dust settles Davison and Skatchard are going at it. The only things bruised were ego's, but when you're 4-0 down (San Jose smashing Phoenix), you may as well try and win the battle, because the war was well and truly lost!

you see it a lot when one team has a big lead. near the end of the game, the losing team sends out "the tough guys", just to prove that they won't be walked over and the set the tone for the next game. the opposing coach will see this happening and send out his "goons", in order to protect the superstars/scorers/europeans, and the next thing you know, chaos...
    fun for the whole family.

It was Mike Comrie who was involved in a solid front-on check next to the goals that sent both to the floor, a matter of seconds later he was on the opposing blue-line and came in with another solid check - and that was enough for the Sharks!

Is one of the pre-req's for your on-ice team that between them they aren't allowed to make up a full set of teeth?

For years I've played Ice Hockey computer games with mates (starting with the MegaDrive!) because it combines goal scoring and beating the crap out of your mate - there's nothing better than levelling a guy into the boards, perhaps even injuring them From there the interest has grown. It's not the easiest game to follow on the TV.

The thing that amazes me about the game is the longevity of the players, some of these guys are 35+ and still mixing it up with the young fellers. Truth is they play about 8-12 minutes on the ice, but they are tough guys.

The way they can sprint, stop, change direction and go 100 miles an hour again is pretty damn amazing.

you get the odd freak like chris chelios, 42 and still playing 18-20 minutes a night.

as for the teeth thing, with a frozen puck flying around at 100 mph and 12 sticks on the ice at a time, you generally lose a few.

they actually held a ufc-style hockey fight championship a year or so ago. it didn't do too well due to problems with the legalities, insurance, etc.. i was a little bitter when i heard about it because about 3 years prior i suggested the idea to the boys one night when we were sitting around having a few beers.
