    Default Driver repair rules

Here's one we were presented with last weekend....player has a driver with some sticky lead tape on the heel, after 4 holes the lead tape had fallen off somewhere on last hole. We are playing in a comp. What are his options...

    a) Play the driver as is?

    b) He had more lead tape of the same size/brand/etc in his bag, could he replace it so driver is now exactly same as before but with a "new " piece of lead tape?

    c) Can repair driver...BUT....with only the original piece of lead tape, that is - if we could find it?

    d) Leave driver in bag as "unplayable" for remainder of round.

We were unsure, we allowed him to play on with driver "as is"....Stu

Tricky one, my INSTINCT (and that's all it is) is the driver is done for the day if you're going to the letter of the rule book?

Even if you found the original piece of lead tape, it would have to go back on in the EXACT same spot, otherwise you've knowingly changed the characteristics of the club.

I could be well and truly wrong though.

In saying that, it'd be a bit of a dick move to call that, and I'd be perfectly OK with them playing on, we're not playing for a million bucks.

Q.With regard to Decision 4-1/4, may a player remove, add or alter lead tape during a round?
A.No. However, lead tape that becomes detached from the club in the normal course of play may be placed back onto the club in the same location. If the lead tape will not remain on the club in the same location, new tape may be used. Every effort should be made to restore the club, as nearly as possible, to its previous condition. Alternatively, the club may be used in its damaged state (without the lead tape) for the remainder of the round (Rule 4-3a).
If the tape is altered or damaged other than in the normal course of play, the club may not be used for the remainder of the round, under penalty of disqualification (see Rules 4-2a and 4-3).

Good to know, cause I have a shit tonne of lead tape on most clubs in my bag!
Of course, I'd actually have to play golf for it to be a problem, and even then, my hacker mate that kicks his ball to a better spot every second shot probably wouldn't care as we're hacking it around a social round.
