    Default WDYS - March 2025

3 games over the last 3 days with the old pre OzGolf crew.

Forgot to pack my golf game for this trip. Never seen so many triples and quads on the card. Cant putt, cant hit a green from 50-160m and the fairways are getting narrower and narrower with each round.
Having problems getting the rounds started losing balls on the first drive of the day the first 2 days and put one over the fence on the 3rd day.
2x sleeves of new balls used so far in 3 rounds. Good thing I have another dozen Kirkland balls to waste.

    Round 1
    28pts
    0x birdies
    4x 3 jiggles
    2x lost balls

    Round 2
    30pts
    0x birdies
    6x 3 jiggles
    2x lost balls

    Round 3
    27pts
    1x birdies
    4x 3 jiggles
    2x lost balls

Had to amend round 3 as what I thought was a long par 3 turned out to be a very short par 4.

    Round 4
    Played in the comp today.
Hit it much better and managed to finish the round with the same ball I started with.
Kept the stupid triples and quads off the card and no penalties. Felt like I putted better.
Some how and I’m left scratching my head I’ve recorded my worst stableford score over the 4 days

    26pts
    0x birdies
    0x lost balls
    3x 3 jiggles

    Default WDYS - March 2025

    Round 5
Today was a very dejecting round.
Set the mood on the first hole slotting the driver down the middle, then topping the next 2 shots. Hit the green on the rhs with the 4th shot only to have it bounce into a bunker ending up so close the back wall with my only shot being go long over the back into nothing but trash. Took an unplayable and made a disgusting 8.
Missed 2 fairways for the whole round off tee but hit too many poor seconds or if I did put one on in reg I 3 jiggled it.
Going down the last hole I worked out a scrub would have seen my equal worst score for the week. WTF I never hit that many fairways normally, how can one screw a round that badly.
As it was I shaved the hole with a 12 foot birdie attempt and made par for 3pts. Holing it would have seen my best score for the week equalled.

    29pts
    2x birdies
    4x 3 putts
    1x lost ball

Round 6 and last one for trip.

My playing partners went home yesterday so this was a solo walk around not in carts like the last 5 rounds.
Hit it ok but couldn’t keep a couple of blow up holes off the card when I did miss. All week I’ve manage to string crap shots together on holes to blow them up completely.
Giving the hosel a tickle on the last iron shot for the week sort summed up how disappointing my game was. Keeping that count to 0 after playing poorly all week would have been something at least but that was a fail too.

    30pts
    0x birdies
    0x lost ball
    0x 3 jiggles
    1x hosel rocket

38 points with a birdie and a wipe today in pretty damp conditions. Dunno what my stats were but I hit the ball better after getting back into the familiarity of FJ shoes again, particularly with the driver. Plenty of centre strikes with that club.
Hopefully continue that in tomorrow's round.

I merged the month threads into a year, since people post in the wrong month, and the year thread won't get too big these days.

I played on Saturday in the cyclone delayed second round of the club matchplay championship qualifier. I didn't have a very good first round, but thought I would still give it a crack. I figured I'd need to score about five over par to be a chance of qualifying. I was on track after the first hole by scoring a 5 over 9 with two OOBs off the tee, then accepting a drop forward instead of risking a third. Unfortunately, the following 17 holes let me down and I did not shoot even par for those, but six over instead for an 11 over 78 instead. I missed the qualification cut by 5 shots. Doh!

If you take out the first tee OOBs and some wayward driving in the last few holes, it was a really good ball striking day, which it needed to be since the course was saturated. I rolled the ball well on the greens, but the pin positions were too tricksy to sink many. It ended up being a flagged round and a handicap drop too.

Just got back from a huge week or so of golf.

83/74 with an 11 in the medal.
Went to Corowa and had 37 points, won the comp and got a NTP
Monday went to Tocumwal Captains, had 38 points. After that round, drove to Finley and played another round for fun, something like 33 points.
Tuesday was Tocumwal Presidents, had about 31 points from memory. Great fun back 9 and a great day
Wednesday was Cobram West, played ok,
Thursday was Cobram Old in a 2 man ambrose, carried my partner for a sub par round, then took the 10 hole cash skins game that afternoon.

When it was time for presentation, I was 'best putter', lowest gross and overall runner up, a lucrative week.

Saturday I was home and rolled Captain Kevvie, aka Monsta in R1 of the club matchplay. Despite having 18 points around the front, I was three down, then went even from 12-17 to be one down with one to go. Kevvie doubled, so I had the luxury of a bogey 5 to square the match. Stood on the first and domed my tee shot, Kevvie found the trees 200m up. I punched 5w up to 120 out but blocked by a tree, then missed the green. Whilst I was making a mess, Monsta was playing ping pong in the trees and put his 4th on the green.
I made my only decent putt of the day for a 5 and a win.

One of my all time fun golf weeks.

After 35 points on Sunday I went out for another hit today and another 35 points. Had a few issues with lefts early in the round but worked it out and hit some decent tee shots and irons in the second two thirds or so of the round. Helped starting with six 1 putts, 29 in the end. One stupid 3 putt. Good warmup for the weekend at Middle Ridge.

I had a social hit last Sunday at Wolston Park for a 4 over 71. Ball striking wasn't particularly great with only six greens in reg, but the short game was on, which included 26 putts. I was even through 15, but those last few holes are regularly my undoing and got me again.

It was the first round of the Easter Cup yesterday (best 2 of 4), and I turned in a 71 to be in 7th through one round, but I'll only play 2 anyway. I couldn't hit greens early (five over on the front) and there were some pretty bad shots throughout the day (thins, big cuts, a dome and a chunk) but I also went on a tear on the back nine with a few kakaaas, including a pitch in from 40m. One under on the back nine with a double bogey on 17 to go with the three birdies. I need to find a strategy for a safe bogey on the 17th, but I don't know if it exists.

Flew back home yesterday, made a late night decision to play the Maryborough Saturday comp.

Hit off 10, parred the first 4, then a mixed bag of bogies to turn +4 (19 points). Parred 1, then a lost ball wipe after clipping a tree with my second. Reg par on 3 and 4, then on the par 5 5th on 2. Lipped the eagle for an easy bird, got lucky on 6 with a chip on bird, then hit it to 2ft to birdie the par 3 7th. Weak drive on 8 led to a soft bogey. Lipped the bird to finish the front 9 on 21pts.

    21/19 40 off 8.
    3 birds
    5 bogies
    1 lost ball wipe
    No 3 jiggles

29 points in the first round at Middle Ridge today (Div 2 is Stableford). Didn't have a good day tee to green unfortunately, but I was fairly happy with the short game and putting, given the somewhat unfamiliar surfaces.

+4 in a 4BBB par comp. NFI about my individual score.

This was my first par comp for 6 or 7 years I reckon.

Backed up my Friday 71 with another 4 over 71 for 36 points to take my Easter aggregate to 72. Handicap down to 5.7.

This round was uglier than Friday's as I rarely felt comfortable over the ball (poor sleep maybe), except for driving, but I kept finding ways to score and didn't have any disasters. The two long putts that I left well short which led to three putts are my regret, but the two sand save three pointers to finish made up for it.

I also hit the pin on my tee shot on the par 16th par 3, which is a first for me.

I'm happy with the 72 points, but I'm just short of the leader on 83 points from his only two rounds. A 25 marker scoring 40 and 43 points to win both the Friday and Sunday daily comps; quite the form patch. I'm tempted to go out there today and try to shoot an 8 under par 48 points to take him down, but my legs need a rest day.

33 points in the second round at Middle Ridge on Sunday, was a little bit better off the tee and approach but got up and down more with better putting. Fun couple of days.

Finished up the long weekend yesterday with 79/37 points back at home. Hit it reasonably well most of the round, started to make a few crappy swings late but managed to scramble well enough to make two pars and bogeys in the final four holes. No doubles on the card, one birdie on 6.

Used my Cairns GC reciprocals at Eastwood GC while down in Melbourne on Sunday.

    Nothing major to report.

86 off the bat, with about 53 of those being putts.

Day was summarised perfectly by three moments.

Had struggled off the tee the first 3 holes but had 5 points through 3, come to the 13th (my 4th), a blind over the hill dogleg left par 5. Local said to "hit one down the right side, it's OK if it finishes in the rough as you won't be blocked out by trees to go for the green in two." Pound a beautiful baby cut down the right rough line, until we see it kick 60° right upon landing, never to be seen again. Wipe on a piss-easy 440m par 5.

The second was the 18th (my 9th), a 260m par 4, OOB left and bunker surrounded green. Hit driver to the front edge, it rolls up, nearly staying on, then back down into the little gully at the front of the green. Texas Wedge it, it doesn't move as much as I think right to left off the greenfront, so misses the cup by about 18 inches low side (right), I'm thinking tap-in birdie. It then keeps trickling down the slope, trickling, trickling, trickling, catches another downslope, and finishes 30 feet away. 3 more putts later (my 3rd still from 5 feet), not easy 5/1.

The last on the slightly uphill 179m 8th (my 17th) playing into a 25km/h breeze. Massive mounding right, deep bunker and 30ft drop off short left, hazard long left, just no getting up-n-down all round. Lasered a 4 iron that didn't move one iota off the flag. Hit the green, kicked a little left and finished pin-high, about 12 feet away. Hit a putt that was absolutely dead on the line I wanted. Finished 5 feet short. Got so caught up in getting the line I'd hit it half-****ing-way. Horse-shoed the par putt, easy 4/1.
