The only Halloween party I went to, was forced on me (work). I told everyone I won't participate because "it's against my religion" to celebrate something that is evil. and then turned up dressed as a monk carrying a can of petrol and a box of matches.

No issues with that as far as I'm concerned. I do like your costume though!
Plenty in our neighbourhood who don't want a bar of it either for religious reasons, or for the same reasons as others on here. All the kids are to to just not bother them, and it's worked pretty well around here. The reason it works well in around here is the letterbox drop that explains what to do, for everyone, those with kids trick or treating, those not participating etc (the good thing for them is they just do nothing). Keeps the neighbours happy if they don't wanna get bothered, and they don't get bothered.
But it's easier to do around here where we're a little bit detached from the town, and while not a gated community, it's kind of just a group on our own. Would be a different story where we used to live, and I wouldn't have let my kids roam around on there own there anyway. But it's kinda easy here to just draw a line and say this is where it's being done.

That just sounds like too many people trying to tell others what to do for my liking. I'd be hoping that kids would see it for what it is and duly ignore it. I like to let my kid decide which door she knocks on - obviously she mostly chooses the houses with signs, but the best ones are when she decides to try a random house for reasons only she knows. One lady told her she didn't have any treats and would have to have a trick, and then blew a raspberry at her. She did relent and give her a lolly in the end, but that was the best one of the night for me.

Encourages consumption of sugar and shit food. Terrific for childhood obesity.

Encourages vandalism and a lack of respect for private property.

    Encourages invasions of privacy.

    What is not to love.

People with no kids like it that way and appreciate it when uninvited kids stay away.

Same goes for Mormons, energy plan sales people and stoners with stolen chain saws offering to do tree lopping.

The only difference is that if the chainsaw-wielding stoner asks for chocolate, it's probably best to give him some.

I find people with kids tend to lose all objectivity and ability to assess statements rationally.

As I started this years discussion, it is only right for me to report the follow-up.

My strategy of building a garbage bin barrier worked. No unwelcome knocking on my door.

But it seemed to me that the terrors were a bit more respectful this year. They didn't knock on my 85 year old neighbours door either. The across-the-road neighbour was participating, and I heard many thank yous from the receivers.

Maybe it was due to the weekend, rather than the weekday. Last year they were out early, probably into their gear as soon as they got home from school, but this year there didn't seem to be anything before about 6.00.'

I don't mind what they do if they don't try and involve me in it, and this year was OK.

This year definitely started and finished earlier to previous years.

If people had their houses decorated, or doors open, etc, our kids would knock.

We would tell them not to bother knocking on certain houses if they didn't look like they were participating.

Going to decorate the house for Halloween this evening.

Putting out the 'Wet Cement' sign from a few weeks ago, when I re-pointed the front path.

Might even saturate the mortar, in case anyone thinks they can scratch their name in the wet cement.

My daughter will be trick or treating for an hour or so and then retiring to the residence for a Halloween party with 8 of her friends. It's getting bigger every year.
