    Default Matilda's

So i watched my first women's footy match, and i have to say... penalty shoot outs don't do it for me.
Everyone of those girls who took the shot at goal did not have elation on their face after the actual kick, It was nothing but pure relief if they kicked the goal or totally gutted if they missed.

Once you go to penalties... it is a matter of who doesn't lose the match, not who wins it.

Hoping for a goal or 3 on Wednesday, this is no way to win a game.

As a former team penalty taker... I can say it's exciting, and is as much a test of technical skill and mental strength, and by that time of the game, fitness!

It's a lot harder if you're exhausted, legs are jelly and mind is fried. I can tell quite a lot those who miss by seeing them close-up beforehand

I sat through a 20 innings game of MLB, in PHX, i think it finished at around 2am. At least it wasnt cold.
Gosh, imagine having to watch a whole 2 hr Soccer game, then another 2hrs and then still keep going...

I have an idea, unlimited extra time until someone scores, but no goal keepers.

Baseball has come up with quite a good solution by putting a runner on 2nd base in extra innings. But its a problem in every sport where a result must be obtained, and every fan of the eventual losing team wants the system changed so that their team wins.

The best minds in soccer/football have struggled with the solution forever, and they seem to have decided that penalties after extra time is the way to go. It isn't great. but its probably better than watching two teams walking around after three hours because they are too tired to run.

The one thing I do know is that the TV ratings for all the other shows tomorrow night will be record lows.

Good thinking Jim, at least the penalty shootout provides an almost guaranteed finish time. and who can ever forget Scott Sterlings heroics, great drama!

Penalties > the rest of a game
    Forum needs more banter.

They had the "Golden Goal" rule at one time... whereby a goal in extra time won the game. It was supposed to encourage the teams to press for a goal, but did the opposite and made defensive play,
and not conceding a goal, more prominent. They also floated a thought of removing a player each team every 5 mins or so to create more space, but that never got off the ground.

With the playing schedules that the teams and players have now, especially in Europe, and the TV rights being so huge and influential, it seems like they want a definitive END time for a game, and so
penalties have stayed. Personally, I love them!!!

Penalties is OK, I would love to see them at least experiment with reducing the number of players, maybe even in normal game time, anything to reduce the number of nil all draws.

It was nil all the other night and it didn't lessen the drama and intensity of the game, nothing wrong with nil all results. Not saying there aren't shit nil all games either, but no need to artifically try and change that.
Penalties aren't perfect, but at least they mimick an action that can happen in a game. Where as arbitrarily removing players or golden goal don't. For those intereseted, the US did try to 'change' soccer back in the 70's by having shootouts similar to ice hockey to resolve draws.

Anyways, Its been a bloody great World Cup, but lets hope it gets even better tonight!

As a non-watcher of most sports, I saw the first half at the club last night and assumed it was play-off for 7th and 8th, as it was a waste of time.

Cut the games back to two 20 minute halves, then use the second 45 minutes for any extra time and a shootout.

And I get to watch Matlock at the regular start time.

I didn't really get suffer until my son started playing juniors for a while, and we went to a few senior local games and to see the roar. I kinda got it after all that.
But I'm not a sport watcher. And yeah, while the scores don't have to be AFL like, it is a lot of effort for nil all results.

Not all 0-0 results are the same though... sometimes can feel like a win, other times a loss

England too good. Anyway, still plenty to play for, 3rd place is worth a fair bit

Nah. Nobody cares about 3rd/4th playoffs, in any sport.

We lost fair and square to a better team. But a real positive is that perhaps the biggest sporting audience in Australian history got to see a magic Sam Kerr moment.

Better looking team I might add as well, a few lionesses I would request ‘a very large portion yes!’

The “exotic” team pics of the Pommie lasses from a few years ago illustrate clearly what a tight knit group they are.

Frustrating way to lose, mistakes cost the goals and Sam missing at least one sitter. But oh my how good her goal was.

Blokes talking about what the women look like rather than the game shows how far the women's game has come.

Was a shame to go out that way, but that from Carpenter was an absolute howler, a schoolboy(girl?) error. Unless you're 100% certain you have the position and communication with your 'keeper to gather that ball, you hoof the ****ing thing across your body into touch.

Catley's marking for the last was fairly horrendous too. Even when she saw Russo collecting the ball she still made no effort to get across and push her wider and pressure the shot.

If you're going to set up and play a signature "defence-first", counter-attack style of football you can't be done by two goals like that.
