Woodlands has its place of course.

As a sand mine for the actual sandbelt courses.

How can u lot say that?
3 to 8 is a great run of holes plus 15 is one of the very best par 5’s in the country.

#4 is probably my favourite short 4 in golf and I have played every where!

I could play Woodlands every day - the land movement from the first to 7th, then the run of 9-13 are magic.

I didn't get to play 16 onwards, and my memory of those holes is vague, but I recall liking 18 as its a short 5 with a chance of a 3 with two great shots

3 very nice finishing holes we missed out on unfortunately. 16 is a nice slightly right to left bending long 4 with a solid green complex, 17 is a 150m hit the green or you're ****ed par 3, and 18 is a go for it in two or you're a pussy par 5. I really like the run home all the way from 13.

Given the relative simplicity of the land #4 is placed on I am surprised it hasn't been replicated more often for such a great golf hole. It's like RMW#13 in that respect.

But back to the title topic. Yes, I am a member there and I think Old has plenty of flaws, but also offers some genuinely thrilling shots to play. It's a positional course. I only plan to use driver on a couple of holes depending on the wind. Some days it will stab you in the face on some pretty marginal misses. And that's my main gripe with it. There are so few options for a recovery shot. There's no chance to try and get yourself back in the hole and maybe eke out a good wedge and make the putt for a par. It's a lost ball so reload and try again.

If you are playing well, you will get a lot of looks at birdie.

Gunnamatta is undergoing some major surgery to resolve a safety issue on 17/18 for the next month or two.

Moonah remains an excellent choice to play for everyone - although it is biased heavily towards long and strong.

My advice to a visitor (and I'm away for most of March so I can't help you I'm afraid) is to have a look around on Old, but play Moonah.

One thing that surprised me was $200 price tag on Woodlands, I really like it, but give me games at both StAB & Dunes for the same cash anyday.

The greensite that always looked out of place for me at Woodlands was 9, considering the movement of the fairway it always felt plain to me.

I've haven't yet played any of the courses at the National (played LI pre takeover) but I've really wanted to play the Old, the greensites look like shed loads of fun. But hearing others I does sound like it could be slog. Does it have a decent forward tee?

PR - played Old twice, both in members comps so tees were back.

If your game stinks on the day, then its intolerably hard.

If you are playing with a knowledgeable local, they will save you 5 shots by telling you where not to hit it. Its the most 'don't go there' course I have played, but there some amazing, heroic shots which reward courage and great ballstriking - generally after laying up the shot before....

It's not really long at 5873m from the regular (blue) tees. 3rd you really need to carry about 170+ on the tee shot and that would be the strongest requirement asked off the tee. The slog comes from getting a whack if you stray.

I've played it half a dozen times, some of the greens like the first should have a windmill house or whatever you putt into at a Putt-Putt It's a windy site, I'm no GCA expert but a bit more width, flatter and less perched greens would have been my go but I don't have any idea what the original design brief was.

For mine the Old was allowed to get away with being what it is because some of the more masochistic members had some weird love affair with the original track and could hate on the Ocean. Now it's gone and with the passage of 30/40 odd years, perhaps there will be some changes.

ParkRoyal: like Bruce says, play the Moonah, wonderful course (a slog home if you are into the wind)..

Will be having my first hit at Gunnamatta at the end of April so hoping the work will be complete.

Some of the long term members are a bit weird on this point. Complaining that there aren't enough lost balls on Moonah and especially Gunnamatta.

Based on what I saw on the weekend it will need some very favorable growing conditions for the full course to be in play by the end of April. I hope it works out for you.

Clearly been a while for me then and I usually played with members and never paid more than $60.

One thing I'm glad for down here in Tas is low Membership and green fees.
