    How did you go?
. Pretty good. Set a new low mark of 4.7, won 3 monthly medals, had a couple of good results in club events without getting on the honour board.

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?
. Pretty much. Wanted to get to the lowest ever, wanted to win at Pennant. I lost the 18th hole in 2 matches to end up with a losing record for the first time in 4 years, although I was also giving up to 5 shots away
Finished 11th in Club Champs, 3rd nett. Goal was top 10 but I beat the guys I benchmarked myself against.

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?

A long way forward – and it sure wasn’t through hitting range balls, warming up, or practising.

Are there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share?

Port Fairy in 50k an hour wind and rain a few weeks back was comical and fun.
I played 3 courses in a day in May, 9 holes in -4 at Braidwood, 9 holes at Oaks Ranch, and then finished at the excellent Tathra GC as the sun was setting.
Playing the inlaws in a match 2 days ago - I gave them both a shot a hole handicap as a team against me, shot even par, squared the match on the last. There were birdies, chip ins and bombs made. It was a ton of fun and something we will remember for years.

Did you play some great courses?

Great is subjective. I really enjoyed Royal Canberra and Port Fairy. Pacific Dunes feels overrated, and on second playing, so does Warrnambool.

    Handicap
    Started on:
    9.2

    No. of rounds:
I think it was 115 plus pennant, a couple of golf trips. Bugger all social golf though.

    Highest Handicap:
9.2 on new years day. I won that comp and never looked back.

    Lowest Handicap:
    4.7

    Finished on:
    6.7

    ---------------

What are your goals for 2023?
Just keep enjoying, improving, learning, laughing. Its only golf, not life and death. I glanced at death during the year and golf is a far better option.

    Got any golfing holidays planned?
    Vic Champs

Have a particular course lined up to play?
Nothing yet, but we are going OS in July so I will find something unique. Looking at a course next to an active volcano.

    How did you go?
Pretty good overall. Gradually replaced my old clubs with new fitted ones which along with semi regular lessons has helped me improve and enjoy my golf more.

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?
More or less. I didn't get to my target handicap but I have improved noticeably over the year.

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?
    Forwards

Are there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share?
A couple of highlights were spinning a wedge back into the hole from about 80 metres at Tenterfield which is my longest hole out to date, and a slam dunk bunker shot. The Tenterfield trip away was a great experience outside of that shot as well.

Did you play some great courses?
Well the ones I enjoyed the most were probably Maroochy River and Maleny.
    ---------------

    Handicap
    Started on:
    20.4

    No. of rounds:
Somewhere around 100-110 at a guess.

    Highest Handicap:
    20.4

    Lowest Handicap:
    11.5

    Finished on:
    11.5

    ---------------

What are your goals for 2023?
Further improvement, aiming to get down to 7 by this time next year.

    Got any golfing holidays planned?
Tenterfield will be on again, but money will dictate whether I go or not.

Have a particular course lined up to play?
At this point I'm just going to Maleny some time in January to play a comp round. So far I've only played social club games there.

    How did you go?

I've reached the stage where just playing golf is an acceptable outcome, but it finished quite well, so I'm calling it a good year.

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?

I answer this question the same way every year. All I want to do is keep playing, and to a reasonable standard, so the answer is yes.

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?

A long way backwards for much of the year, then a climb back to a slightly forwards level.

Are there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share?

I can't think of anything. No eagles, but I did win an overall comp, which is very hard to do at my home course.

Did you play some great courses?

No. I stayed home this year.
    ---------------

    Handicap
    Started on: 7.1

    No. of rounds: 48

Highest Handicap: 9.6. This meant a daily handicap in double figures for the first time in 10 years.

    Lowest Handicap: 6.6

    Finished on: 6.6

    -------------

What are your goals for 2023?

Nothing much. Just keep playing. If the next question/answer doesn't happen, I might go through the full process of getting new clubs, to match my ever-slowing swing speed.

Got any golfing holidays planned? Not a playing holiday. If the planets align, I may go on a holiday that includes a visit to the Ladies Scottish Open, and also a close inspection of Troon and Prestiwick Golf Courses, which happen to be nearby.

Have a particular course lined up to play? No.

    ------------

    How did you go?
I got my handicap into the 6's for the first time and kept the following slide from blowing out too much. Generally happy to maintain my game at that standard and hit a new PB round of 2 over off the stick.

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?
I don't tend to set goals for my golf except getting out to play and try to enjoy the bits between the terrible shots.

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?
    About the same.

Are there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share?
    Not particularly.

Did you play some great courses?
I got to play Newcastle again which counts for me as a great course, otherwise no.

    How did you go?
For half the year, the course was underwater or recovering, but didn't miss golf and didn't look to play elsewhere.

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?
Told clients to fend for themselves at EOFY, and retired.

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?
    Forwardish.

Are there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share?
4 birdies in nine holes (and probably another 4 for the rest of the year)

Did you play some great courses?
No, I didn't leave NSW (although Moss Vale was a pleasant surprise).

    How did you go?
The first half of the year was electric! The game just seemed so easy for a period, but the good form slowly drifted away and then the back end of the year fell off a cliff as my back played up again.

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?
Yes and no. I reached a new level of play, but once again the old consistency demon raised its head.

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?
If the handicap is the measure, I'd have to say forwards. Although recency bias makes me feel otherwise.

Are there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share?
Shooting +1 in the opening round and then playing in the leading group in the Cairns Open was a cool experience. It proved to me that I can hold my own when I put it all together.

Did you play some great courses?
I didn't leave the region this year, so no.
    ---------------

What are your goals for 2023?
Get the back sorted, then work on getting some of the early '22 form back.

    Got any golfing holidays planned?
VIC Champs, plus maybe another side trip or 2 (tbc).

Have a particular course lined up to play?
King Island, Ocean Dunes plus the VIC Champs rota.

    For my righty game...

    How did you go?
    Meh.

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?
    Nope.

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?
I suppose technically backwards as indicated by the handicap, but I was never going to drop 'cap straight up after having my best round off the stick in my handicapping cards. I'm such an idiot. I'd say it was pretty stagnant, but my short game has got a LITTLE more consistent.

Are there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share?
Gagging hard to lose to Ron Burgundy off the bat in "The Match" at Sea Reef still hurts, and will crush my soul until the day I die.

Did you play some great courses?
7 games at Cairns GC and one un-handicapped round at Sea Reef, so no.
    ---------------

    Handicap

    Lowest Handicap:
    13.2

    Finished on:
    15.5

    ---------------

What are your goals for 2023?
I'd like to hit double digits of games played for the year, and really crack in to see if I can get to single digits. It's gonna take some work though, so probably won't happen.

    Got any golfing holidays planned?
    Not this handed.

    How did you go?
Got back into a real job, so a low bar was set, and a low bar was met.

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?
My goals were to not get on proper anchor, and I didn't so that was a result.

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?
    Backwards, then forwards I guess.

Are there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share?
Not really, though the sneaky Adelaide jaunt was enjoyable.

Did you play some great courses?
RA is always a pleasure, otherwise just a handful of very good courses.

If I was a better human I wouldn’t take quite as much pleasure from reading this.
Cinderella story, out of nowhere, former greenskeeper, now about to become a Masters champion..... It looks like a mirac.. It's in the hole! It's in the hole!

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?
    Yep. Had fun.

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?
Golflink says backwards but I don't care.

Are there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share?
CoC as always. Hamilton Island just before Christmas was an absolute joy.

Did you play some great courses?
Hamilton Island was lots of fun.
    ---------------

    Handicap
    Started on:
    12.7

    No. of rounds:
42 in Golflink. This is a pretty good effort considering my course was closed for 8 or 9 weeks earlier in the year due to flooding. There were probably half a dozen social rounds in there too.

    Highest Handicap:
    14.4

    Lowest Handicap:
    12.2

    13.4

    How did you go?
Lost the love through the year. A few spurts of ok golf but not really much interest overall.

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?
I didn't have any goals this year as I had doubts as to what might happen again with Covid and lock downs.

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?
    Backwards a little bit.

Are there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share?
I was winning a long drive at a local ambrose event and then the wife who plays once a year in the ambrose hit it 5m past me. There were 2 holes with long drives, I won one and she won the other. Made me realise I look forward to her playing more when the kids get a bit older.

Did you play some great courses?
My home course (Coomealla), and my original home course (Ouyen, sand scrapes!)
    ---------------

    Handicap
    Started on:
    3.7

    No. of rounds:
    22

    Highest Handicap:
    4.2

    Lowest Handicap:
    3.3

    Finished on:
    3.3

    ---------------

What are your goals for 2023?
Coomealla is under water and will be for at least a couple more months. I should be taking this chance to do fundamental swing work which I will once the weather cools a bit. Goal for the year is to get under 2 at some point. My lowest ever is 1.9. To do that I have to play more once the course is open, depending on the timing of that I may join up elsewhere too.

    Got any golfing holidays planned?
I would like to head over to Murray Downs but I want to be in some sort of form before going there so maybe Sept-Oct time frame.

    Default 2022 - A year in review

    How did you go?

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?

Yes- without reviewing the goals thread I ticked off a heap of longstanding goals.
    - got to scratch
    - shot under par in a comp round
    - made the A Grade pennant side (and went 5 and 1 in my matches for the season)
    - made the seeded groups in at least 2 Major Comps (Club Champs, FNQ Open and I think CoC.)
    - Lost in the Quarter Finals of the Club Champs Matchplay.

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?

Handicap went out slightly but overall the game improved significantly and was really the tale of 3 parts of the year.

First 3 months I played very well, shooting under par 3 times in 5 rounds

The middle 6-8 Months of the year I was training for a 50k Ultra and was very busy travelling for work so I didn’t spend a lot of time on my game but played a lot and had some good results in the Major Events. In fact from the 4th of August to the end of the Year I played 32 comp rounds and only failed to make 30 points twice (10th and 14th of December). This part of the year was a bit of a let down because I didnt capitalise on a heap of good play. Lots of chokes on the way in and the like.

The last part of the year and particularly the 2 months Post UTA50 was pretty good.

From an Arccos perspective the second half was heaps better the the first half.
I improved in every aspect of may game except Approach play.

    As per the below:

Are there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share?

CoC as always was awesome, the quick trip to Adelaide to play there on a weekend was up there especially with the company and the courses we played.

One of the best highlight was surprising SundayHack for his birthday and playing Hamilton Island with him and 3PP.

Did you play some great courses?

Yeah - was a decent year of golf related travel.

What are your goals for 2023?

Realistically I want to improve across the board and play well enough over the year to comfortably make the Pennant side and keep contending in Major Events. I fear work and a heavy training schedule for a couple of big Ultra’s will impact this but its all about having fun anyway.

    Got any golfing holidays planned?

    Vic Champs in Feb
    CoC in August

Have a particular course lined up to play?

Cant wait to play Cape Whickham.

I think Bushy is a lock for golfer of the year. Though, nominating playing with 3PP as a highlight is a worry.

On that point, my low round of the year, was with 3PP. Maybe he is an inspiration

    How did you go?
I improved, so that's something, just not as much as I wanted considering the extra work put in. A couple of good rounds at the end of the year saved it from seeming like a fail.
I was hoping Arccos could give me data for the year, but it doesn't let me select a calendar year, only recent rounds. The irons were meant to improve and they didn't really.

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?
No, but the goals were probably too ambitious; I need to tone them down a bit. Baby steps.

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?
    Forwards.

Are there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share?
Won B grade gross at Windaroo Open and got a golf bag as a prize.
Did pretty well at club champs.
I made an effort to play in some event days which were good experiences.

Did you play some great courses?
Played plenty of local courses, but only had one trip away for the year and played Healesville and Growling Frog..

    Handicap

    No. of rounds:
28 golflink rounds, but around 50 overall including my own practice rounds.

    9.2

    Lowest Handicap:
    7.0

    Finished on:

What are your goals for 2023?
Hit more greens (7 GIR would be nice without being a stretch goal)
Swing speed with driver of 100mph. I think I'm close, but haven't tested for a while.

    Got any golfing holidays planned?
    Vic Champs done.
    City of Cairns tournament weekend.
Clubs to be taken on any work travel, which didn't really happen last year.

Have a particular course lined up to play?
Nope. I'll continue targeting an event each month or so, like the Laidley 36 hole classic in March to challenge myself.

Andy, You are probably getting close to 100mph, you definitely picked up a heap of speed since a few years ago.. for comparison I max out at 97.5 with a 44.5" shaft no matter how hard i try. 96mph is my average if i hit a bunch on the trackman without trying. But the easier way to pick up another 2-3mph is add an inch.

I've been gripping down with the driver for the last couple of months, as I was finding it more accurate, and probably undoing some of the swing speed gains.

But then you hit the middle if the club more!
I believe 1mph of club speed equals 2yards of distance and 1 inch might be about 2mph of speed.

So unless we go and do a Bushy and bulk up, there isnt a lot we can do to get big gains, unless our strikes are not close to optimal ( mines pretty close)
