Default 8 Club Rat Rod Set - Can i break 80 on my home track?

Ok my golf game sucks atm and new equipment is crazy expensive so i thought id have a bit of fun

Thought rather than spending a fortune i'd make up a half set with stuff i have lying around at home that has cost me nothing or very little

Then see if i can break 80 on my home track

So this is my rat rod set made up of stuff i have lying around

    Driver Head
$0 - Gifted to me by a fellow ozgolfer as it has a rattle (i've never tried so i don't know)
    Titleist TSI 10 Degree
Don't have a shaft (which i thought i did) so this will be my main expense, depending on how i go with everything else i reckon i'll set myself a budget of $100

4 wood Head (Probably won't make the cut of 8 Clubs but i'll build up)
$0 - Gifted by an ozgolfer for lie and loft adjustments to his irons
    Exotics 109 16.5 Degree
Speeder Evo II 757 Stiff - Came with a driver but was 3 wood length

    Hybrid Head
Had this head lying around for ages
    $0 Mizuno MP650 19 degree
    $0 Steelfibre 110 X - had for ages?

    Irons
Taylormade Rac TP MB Blades 3 to PW - Will Play 4,6,8,W
    $100 Ebay Purchase
Shafted with 6.0 Rifle Flighted except for 6 and W which are DG
They are a bit short so im going to soft step them which solves my issue of the DG in 6 iron and W

    Wedge
Mizuno T20 58/08 Head - I'll bend to 56 and may grind for bunker play
$70? Bought off an ozgolfer a while ago and i've just had sitting around
Im going to us the DG out of the TM TP MB Wedge

    Putter
Anser 2 Head - Which im trying to remove shaft from - Ball bearing is not playing ball
Came off ozgolf and cost me very little may have even come free with a package with some other gear
I have an old .355 Scotty shaft i can put it if i can ever get the shaft out
Plan B is i have a really nice Anser 4 that cost me $50-$60 but i have a preference for Anser 2

    Grips
I have 8 used tour velvets that i pulled, i'd love cords but i don't have enough matching

So far i've spent $0 but i need to buy
    Driver shaft
Ferrules - Collared for irons to soft step them

Will take me some time to build and get onto the course but i wanted to have it down as a record

Going to be fun and i'm looking forward to it!!

    Cheers
    Tom

Nice challenge for yourself, jonti. Anything to keep playing when you are in a rut is a good idea.

Pretty solid lineup of gear. As long as you can build them in specs that suit you then I reckon you're a decent chance!

Ferrules ordered off ebay - blowing my budget at $24.65 for 12

All shafts have been pulled, grips removed, cleaned, spined & dry fitted

Im learning as i go but i estimate irons & hybrid will play around D5 with tour velvets

That will be cool as if i like and splurge and put some cords on should bring it down to around D4 but see how we go

Quality driver shaft on a budget is next on the agenda then trying to sort out Anser 2

First Round today with my 8 club Rat Rod set
    Driver - Titleist Tsi2 w Diamana W70 X
    Hybrid - Mizuno Mp 650 19 degree Steelfibre 110 X
    Irons - 4,6,7,W - Rifle 6.0
    Sand - Mizuno T20 58/08 bent to 56 with DGS300
    Putter - Ping Anser 4
    Course - Long Island
Tsi2 Driver head does have a rattle and i struggled with, not sure if weight of the shaft or the head itself?
    Hybrid is flat-out no good
Irons were mint, don't hit them as far as Srixon ZX7 but i put that down to much weaker lofts
Putter - struggled with the lighter head weight compared to modern putters
    Score 76 / +4
Happy overall, i don't normally carry my clubs but was nice to have a light bag and carry them around
Next goal is level par or better but i'll have to do some thinking / trading with driver, hybrid, putter
    Cheers

Big gap from 7 to W. How did that go for you?

    🤣 I’ve reset my goals 👍
    Round could have been better
Putter let me down early but I put that down to super light headweight by todays standards
Need to do something about driver, hybrid, putter and see how I go
    It was a typo, no 7, had all even number irons so 4, 6, 8, W, 56
    Cheers

I'm a big fan of the small bag. Good to work on your shotmaking.

Johnny - Was good fun, i have a tendency of going at the shorter club harder with poor results i think this will help me go with the longer club softer, main issue was putting though, missed a few short ones early and 3 of my 5 bogies were fringe 3 putts so im either going to try and fix Anser 2 or trade Anser 4 for something else
Webster - Yes, was in the comp and had a fellow ozgolfer in the group

knocking the 58 down to 56, not much bounce left for bunkers.

More club, gripped down with a baby fade sounds like the way to go when you are inbetween clubs.

Get yourself a putter that cooperates and you'll be set.

Thought i'd update my 8 club set experiment as i played my 18th round today
Happy but disappointed as i bogeyed the last to shoot level par
Welcome to check out my Golflink # 3030315334 my first 8 club round was 25/8/22
Made a few changes along the way and its no longer a 'Rat Rod' set but still cool and shows it comes down to short game and putting for me
    Current Setup
    Ping G410 w Fujikura 661 Evo V X - I've had this driver for ages
    Titleist 818 H1 Hybrid 19deg - Tour AD DI 105X
    Srixon Xu85 #4 - KBS $Taper 130X
    Mizuno MP5 - 6,8,W $Taper 130X
Cleveland RTX Zipcore 56Mid - DG Tour Issue s400
Evenroll Zero - Yes i'm not proud of this but wanted to try but won't be staying in the bag - does roll well though

I've really enjoyed it been great fun and i've loved carrying my clubs like i did when i was a kid

    Cheers
    Tom
