    Default Recommendation on Tennis Racquets

I've signed up for a tennis comp, starting tonight, and I haven't played the game for 4 or 5 years. I haven't own a tennis bat since I was 14.

Anyone know anything about these things? Should I saunter off to Cash Converters and see what they have on the shelf, or try a Rebel Sports Wilson special for the $60 price range and see what I can pick up. I figure a Cash Converters pickup could be good, but might need a re-string that would be 75% of the cost of a newie. Do Wilson make Whale tennis gear?

Of course, the missus says we have a perfectly good racquet in the garage... from her uni days. I told her they stopped making them from wood in the early 1980's.

    See a pro and get a racquet-fitting......

See if you can try some demos from a pro shop, so you can get a feel for a few of them.
I don't think there's anything too wrong with a Rebel Sports or A-mart special though.

So are you playing once a week tennis fixtures?

Once a week for a 12 week comp i think. 3 man team, we play rotation doubles - 3 sets, we each play 2, and then a singles match. So in all it's about 3 hours worth of tennis each week. It was a bit of a last minute thing, but we're looking forward to it.

Are you playing at a tennis centre or a private court tonight?
If it's a tennis centre, then demo a different racquet for each set.

FYI restringing is about $40 depending on the type of string.

It's a tennis centre. I never gave thought to them having any half-decent racquets for hire - i guess that's a stigma brought about by golf pro shops. Perhaps that's the go before a purchase.

Not hire, demo. They should have plenty of racquets available to demo in several brands. You shouldn't have to pay anything, but will probably just have to leave your licence with them.

    No, wait.....

Gaz, why does this not surprise me

Has it got any of those tour string tensioners and a wacky see-thru grip with a picture of Pat Cash on the handle?

How does one 'fit' a tennis racquet?

    grip size?
    weight?

    What else is there?

String tension. Loose for power, tight for control. I used to restring these suckers and squash rackets years ago.

Rumour was that MacInroe used to have very loose strings in his racket, which should increase power but decrease control. Didn't hurt his control any.

Mac, used to string his racket at about 50-55 which is freaking loose for a pro, but for some people just the right tension.

Regardless, just make sure your grip fits you when you put and overgrip on, most people will move to protect there brand new tennis rackets grip by putting an overgrip on it, which on the end ruins the grip underneath.

If your not going to playing for more than 12 weeks, might not be worth getting a new racquet. Might consider getting an ebay speical when you find something you like by your demos.

The guy at the tennis centre told me this last night. I have neither control nor power.

It was a good night but i'm sore now. In a 3 person team, i was the Rank 3 player, which meant I got to play, and beat, a girl. I'm going to have to learn quickly, because it seems that seasoned tennis players in Division 2 are good at one thing - getting the ball back onto your side of the net!

I was the only player to have a singles win, so I'm getting up'ed to the #1 rank next week.

So back to the racquet - i found the bat my missus was talking about, an Emrik (do they still exist?) Ceramic frame circa early 90's. Looks the goods, barely used in fact. Is there that much difference in todays racquets?

Yeah there is a huge difference, older racquets suffer from poor dampening from the shock you feel from hitting a tennis ball. The new rackets are able to handle this alot better. Just get a cheapy from ebay, something like a Babolat some whatever brand takes your fancy. Under 100 should get you a bargain.

Regardless just make sure you get the right grip size, of course you can get overgrips to bump them up a few sizes but its more bother than is worth.
