WDYSTM - July 2022
Welcome to the July WDYS thread, and what seems to be my one entry worth recording in each month.
38 points for me today. We dodged the Sydney rain carnage, but the 20ml's we did get was enough to turn about one quarter of the course into mud. There are some terrible patches, but I managed to avoid them, and I also managed to avoid any trouble without actually hitting the ball very well. The secret to my good score was my long and short putting. I specialised in getting down in two from 70 feet, either from just on the green (usually short after a slight mishit) or from just off. I've been playing OK recently, with scores of 32, 34 and a couple of 35's, usually finding a way to destroy a good score. Fortunately, that didn't happen today.

08/07/2022, Gailes GC, Back Marker Challenge (Scr 73 Sl 127 Par 73), Stroke.
BBBbXBPPX PPXBBXBPP; 45:43:88 (+8:+7:+15)
Played to 10.7 (Daily Difficulty +3). Golflink 9.2 (+0.0).
That was a struggle. Hit driver pretty well, but when I missed, I was punished, which led to blowout holes. I kept battling in the hope I could get the round back on track, but the rubbish holes kept popping up. Found a good swing at the end of the round, which hopefully carries through to today's round, but I did that in my last round, and it didn't carry over. Lucky I can putt (short game stats boosted by off green putting).
That's four consecutive rounds of playing to 10.x. Consistently meh.

It did. Massive improvement in the approach game. Hallelujah! Good driving day too.
Shame about the two double bogeys. One was from a shanked chip. For the other, I played six good shots for the double; great drive, but in the soft it wasn't far enough to the dog leg corner, then intentional low cut 3I around the dog leg corner to just short of the green, followed by a decent chip, but a little too far past the pin, as it hit a downslope; the first putt was too far past because the green was faster than all of the others; just missed the next, and I was crushed with a really good score going.
2nd in A-grade for forty bucks, and got knocked off my $100 NTP by a 23 marker that was in the last few groups....
I'd love to play at this level consistently. Let's see.

Ordinary 28 points today at Oxley. Started on 10 and wasn't going great on that 9 either until a birdie on 18 after my tee shot magically appeared in the middle of the fairway after fading right into the trees. Just dribbled the approach onto the front of the green and holed the long putt. That was the end of that. 17 points on the first 9, limped to 11 on the second. I hit 8/14 fairways, but after beginning the fitting process for new irons last week I can see why I'm struggling with my current ones. Going back Tuesday to do the rest of that so hopefully it won't be too long before I can replace them with something much better suited to my swing, and hopefully start hitting some better approaches.

Coming off my last round of 17 points, I'm happy with 26 points today at Alice Springs.

Some wet spots, but generally really good. Fairways probably on par with Gailes, greens were good.

29 points today, beautiful sunshine, but the course is pretty cut up. Greens were very soft and bumpy. I qas half a club short on most approach shots all day, until I clubbed up on 18 and stuck it to 6 feet. Little right to left break of about 4 cups for the birdie was a nice finish, and picked up the pro pin on the 18th as well.

Social club was at Oxley of all places today, and the game was much the same as yesterday with reasonable tee shots and crappy iron shots. Cold early mornings don't agree with me much either. Ended up with 34 points off that handicap but 29 off my proper one which would have been 12 today off the whites.
Next Saturday is the monthly medal since it was postponed last weekend. I'm hoping to have my new irons for that but not really expecting it'll be that quick.

Absolute bloody mare today. 100/85 in the monthly medal 🥴Can't blame my new irons though, they were one of the few positives of the day. It's a nice change to have control with them and hit them mostly straight. Just everything else was about the level of a 36 handicapper 🤦🏻

Windy, real windy today. Someone said we had gusts up to 60k an hour, all I remember is hitting flush 3 wood, flush 7 iron short on a par 4 310m long. My long drive of the day on the 8th measured 294m, my 3 putt on 6 was down hill and down wind, rolled off the front of the green on the wind

27 points today. I had a bit better day with 93 off the stick but still a little lingering effects from a head cold a few days ago draining the energy levels a bit and making it harder to concentrate properly, short game and putting was pretty rubbish as a result. I struck my irons well for the most part but the radar was off, or I was lining up wrong without realising. A lot of them went dead straight left.
I did at least win a NTP, I wasn't even gonna bother putting my name on it at 8.5 metres but I thought what the hell, nothing to lose.
My handicap has gone out by a shot thanks to the weekend's crap rounds, hopefully by next week I'll be back to normal and can play some better golf.

Somehow managed 46 points at pacific harbour yesterday for an 80 off the stick. GA handicap was 14.8 which of was a daily handicap of 17. New GA handicap is 8.7 as its using only 3 scores as vive only got 11 rounds on the handicap since getting back into it.
Hadn't swung a club since 28 points 2 weeks earlier and had 10 beers the night before. Next best score in the field of 80 odd was 35 points.

Better round today. Played Par, my wedge game was a little off, but finished -3. Absolutely no run on the fairways again, greens are suffering a little from the amount of rain and pior maintenance from players.
Club pro said anything under 80 was a decent score atm, so I guess my 78 is better than I thought.

Strokes Gained vs Scratch.
Day 1

Day 2
Score (Shotgun 4th): bBBPBQ PPPTPPDPT PBP; 36:35:71 (+7:+8:+15).
Played to Adj 9.9 (Daily Difficulty +2). Golflink 8.6 (-0.1).
Confusing weekend for my golf game. I played some really good holes, but there was some absolute trash in there, and way too many penalty shots.
After a good round the week before, I turned in a real bad one on the Saturday. Struggled with a natural feeling swing in the early morning cold for the first few holes, despite a solid warmup. Then the rest of the day felt like I was setting myself up with driver, before hitting a fat approach, which isn't a great strategy on a soggy course. Not my standard putting round either. I even shot a higher gross score than my playing partner who has been known to 4 putt.
What was I thinking starting with a birdie on the second day? The day was a real mixed bag, although overall the ball striking and putting was better. I actually had an 11 hole stretch without a bogey, unfortunately it was 7 pars, a double, 2 triples, and a quad; I've marked them on the score above, instead of my normal X for double or worse. When I made a mistake, I paid for it in penalty shots, and the quad was two dunks in the same hazard; at least it wasn't three like that hack Matsuyama. The tees got moved back and with the course still wet it made the course quite tough, which meant I somehow got a slight handicap chop from the up and down round.
The highlight of the weekend was on the super long index 1 12th on the Sunday, where I hit my longest drive of the weekend (still miles out), then played an intentional draw around the approach blocking gum 185m to end up a few metres from the hole. I didn't get the bird, but man those two shots felt good.

Did better today at Oxley, back to my normal energy levels and concentration was back to normal again too. I'm still working out my distances with my new irons, but I fixed up my alignment issues from last week so most of them were straight on target, just went too far or fell a bit short, and only hit 2 greens in reg. The wind got up during the back 9 which didn't help either.
Finished with 35 points and brought the handicap back in a little. 7 fairways and 31 putts also.
Back again tomorrow, hopefully the wind isn't as strong then.
