    Default WDYSTM - May 2022

1st Round since the middle of April, didn't want to take the risk and go to Innisfail with the current weather, so had a hit at El Arish. Had the course to myself, and a quick 18. A few weeks without a hit, so was a bit rusty to start, but come away with an ok score.
Greens were a bit hairy, but considering the recent downpours the course was in good nick. Short game was good, 25 Putts and pitched solid.

Played Keperra (West) yesterday in a 4BBB with the brother in law who plays off 6 and is a member there. Drove it mostly okay and hit my long irons well, but couldn’t hit a 2nd shot or wedge to save my life. Fairways mowed really tight - which seems to be how the course is usually prepped. Scored on 9 of the holes but was pretty disappointed with 32 points off my own stick. We scored a BB 42 points.

Absolute stinker today at Oxley, 26 points off 12 (11/15) with five wipes. Just one of those days where nothing worked, should have known after a perfectly struck first tee shot cannoned into a friggin tree branch overhanging the fairway.

And then just to annoy me even more I birdied the last.

The Cairns Open was on the weekend just gone, but I'll put the whole report in here rather than splitting it over the two threads.

Round 1: Solid all round. 3 birdies, 2 bogies and a lone stupid double on the last hole to finish at +1. I ended up tying for second and in the leading group in Round 2 for the first time ever.
Round 2: Started well enough. Drove it well all day, hit plenty of greens and felt like I putted well but nothing would drop. I got frustrated by the glacial pace (5.5hrs) and made some poor decisions trying to make something happen. Finished with +9 . Still, the experience was invaluable & I'm now confident I would handle it much better if I get in the same position again.

Monday: I backed up for my 4th consecutive day of golf and made up for the poor round 2 by shooting 38pts and winning the comp.

All in all a successful weekend for various reasons.

Well done Courty. I was following the second round scores on GolfGenius and thought it was a long round. You must have almost finished in the dark!

Yeah Dave, I could only see my drive down 9 when it was above the silhouette of the mountains. I didn't see my 2nd shot at all. Lucky Bushy was up at the green to let us all know where our shots went. Another few minutes and we couldn't have gone any further. Lucky there was no tie!

Had the arvo off for another commitment, solo hit at Oxley afterwards for a bit of practice for Saturday's monthly medal. Wasn't too bad, got to 79 through 17 before it just got too dark to see anything.

Another round at El Arish, that included a triple, a double, three birdies and a sand save out of the only bunker for a 68 (Par 64). Hit it good for the best part and 23 putts always helps.

91/76 in the monthly medal today, in somewhat wet conditions. Didn't really strike it that well, had a 9 on the 4th putting two in the water. Only hit two greens. A number of silly mistakes. 50% up and downs was a bit of a positive though.
Next round with the social club at Mt Warren Park next Sunday. Not sure how much practice I'll get in with the shitty weather predicted all week.

Monthly Medal yesterday. Started the day with the committee meeting, then I had book roster for sign in, then grab the bag and on the tee. No warm up time, not even a putt.
Weather was horrible, started raining around the 3rd hole and never stopped. It felt like 10 degrees all day, the slight wind having that icy feel to it(shorts weather NOT).
3 over after 3, but rallied back to finish 76/74
    2 birdies
    1 wipe
    33 putts on sodden greens

Wondered over to Mannum Saturday and joined the members in a Par comp for the day.
Had a great day playing with 2 players fairly new to Competition Golf, 35 and 33 Hcp and the other on 27 Hcp.
Started the day on fire making birdie with a 3 foot putt on the Par 5 first. Made par on the next for another plus and was 2up after 2.
Only made 1 more score on the nine with a bogey half on the Par 4 fifth. Too many loose drives including 2 OB plus other shots that missed greens always ending up in the wrong position leaving it near impossible to get up and down to save the hole. Finished the nine 4 down thinking wtf.
Back 9 was a mixed bag of 4 pluses, 4 minuses and 1 half. Again if I missed I was it was in the worst position I could leave myself preventing any saved shots. The driver behaved itself a bit better that side so that was the main difference between the front and back nine. Birdied the last after driving it though the green on the short dogleg par 4 to bookend the round.
Card looked strange with only 2 halved holes for the day and everything else being a plus or minus.

24 Points today. Bit of a cluster.
    3 Pars. 3x 7's, an 8 & a 9!
    Couldn't buy a straight drive.
Even managed a few 4 putts, hitting it tooooooo hardddddd.

Did hit some clean hybrid shots.
    Time for some lessons.

Definitely a qualifying score for me today with 36 points that felt like about 41. The course was impossibly difficult due to reasons I'll describe in the next paragraph, but I specialised in getting up and down from 50 to 70 metres short on the front nine, and then played well on the back.

Ballina is a wet mudheap at the moment. There are areas of almost swampy mud about 50 metres round, and you could walk forever trying to find a spot that doesn't bring up casual water. It was claimed today that the greenkeeper wants to close the course for a fortnight, but the greens committee over-ruled him. Even though I played today and played well, the greenskeeper is right. The course is in awful shape, and the damage being caused will take a long time to fix. Unfortunately, this weeks forecast is terrible, so there is no end in sight.

That's a shame to hear about the condition of the course. I played down there last year and rather enjoyed the course.

Interesting you say that. Our Committee did the opposite after the big wet, Tee Up and no carts for two weeks. The course is now the best I have seen it in the over 15 years I have been a member there. There was no comp golf today and probably won't be all week. Pretty sure they will repeat the dose after the rain clears. One of my playing group is an ex Ballina Captain. We let him know.

We're cart paths only at Brookwater, and have big muddy patches on a couple of holes (6 and 18 are particularly bad). All the trees limit sunshine, and we're having another wet week. Closing the course would probably be a good idea.

Recipe for a course/holes to be in a terible stae of repair for a much longer time frame.
Sounds like some selfish individuals that can't see past a few missed games. Hope they're happy when it's an unenjoable mess.

    Default WDYSTM - May 2022

Two rounds in Melbourne on either side of a work trip. Both with the common theme of struggling to get used to the much faster, albeit truer, greens, and my approach game abandoning me again.

02/05/2022, RACV Healesville CC, Blue Tees (Scr 66 Sl 122 Par 68), Social.

    XBBPBBBPX BBBPPPPBb; 44:36:80 (+9:+3:+12).
    Played to 13.0. SCH: 7.7 (+0.4)

Solid driving all day with only a couple real bad ones. Putting was tough with the much faster greens, but I also dobbed plenty of shorter ones because the greens are truer. Approaches went back to being bad, and it was only the back nine where it was a bit more functional; the short game couldn't make up for it though.

06/05/2022, Growling Frog GC, Yellow Tees (Scr 70 Sl 129 Par 72), Social.

    BPBBBPBbB XPBPBPPXP; 41:43:84 (+5:+7:+12).
    Played to 11.4. SCH: 7.7 (+0.0)

Similar to the previous round, but the driving was probably better; it seemed longer too. The greens were even faster, and just as I thought I was getting used to the pace, I'd three putt to throw out the calibration. More poor work with the irons, including missing several after a great setup and having around 100m in. Each round I played the last hole as if I was a low marker with big drives, good approaches and nice putting; one for birdie, one for par. Very frustrating!

Played my previous home course Kapunda in the the comp Saturday.
Was good to catch up with some familiar faces. Was a pity I'd picked the weekend 5 days after the greens had been cored and heavily sanded as 3 jabbing 2 of the first 3 holes from long range wasn't the best start. Hit it solid for the remainder of the nine but putter was stone cold finishing with 17pts. Back nine the driver got loose with swing tempo issues creeping in. Made some great up and down saves from difficult positions to be even with 2 points hole for the day standing on the long par 3 15th. After hitting pulls or draws all day I thought I was safe aiming at the RH mounds off the green with no fear of the OB not far away. From nowhere a massive block fade cleared the fence, the road and over the other fence on the fly with a 3iron. Closed the round out par, birdie, par from terrible positions off the tee that should have seen a bogey, bogey, bogey end in all honesty to finish with 19pts on the back nine and 36pts for the day.

34 points yesterday, leaked a few putts and played the last poorly for the second round in a row. But I have started to hut the ball a lot better.

Highlight or lowlight, depending how you look at it. Hole 7, par 5. Good drive, left myself 240 out, laced a 3 wd, it was tracking toward the green, raced up on and smacked into the flag and finished 9ft from the hole. Missed the eagle putt, ffs.

Difficult and not really getting much reward for some of the good shots I’m hitting.
    Conditions haven’t been great either.

Prep round for Pennant final this Sunday at Werribee Park. Never played their before, was surprised with the great condition of the course. Longer than what I am used to, but made to good drives and plenty of pars. Mapped the greens so hopefully I am hitting them in the right place come Sunday. Wind was strong, an extra club needed for most shots
