First time that I've played at Redcliffe in over 11 years. Condition is pretty good, although the practice greens were not the same as the course greens (3 putted the first as a result). There were a few sandy spots on the fairways, but this was mostly in the low finishing holes, which would have spent the most time under water. Bunkers were the main gripe. A local member had been complaining to me about how they rake all of the sand into the faces leaving the bases bare of sand. I found that out firsthand later, by having a ball plug in a face, which I didn't get out of the bunker; it rolled to the base, where my open face wedge shot bounced due to minimal sand and a knife.

Balter XPA was the best beer option on tap, which is better than my own club.

It is the first time that I have played at Middle Ridge for 15 years, and it seemed a bit shorter than what I remember, particularly the par 5s, although we were playing off the white tees. Course is in great condition with plenty of run. The way it plays is dictated by the overhanging trees though, which cuts down the width of the course, and the options for shots at times.

Once again, Balter was on tap, but I went with a Little Creatures Rogers Amber Ale. It really has been watered down in taste over the years, or maybe it is my tastebuds.

Hmmm, I only recently renewed my membership at Wolston Park, but next year might be different. I have always enjoyed McLeod, except for a short period where they were going bankrupt. It is in really good condition with an enjoyable set of holes with variety. Playing from the whites yesterday, I had decisions multiple times about whether to take a more dangerous line on or not, and that makes golf more fun. There's only one hole that I dislike, and that is the bastardised fourth. I'm not a fan of the 8th, but that is more fear than dislike.

A couple of Balters on tap (Captain Sensible and XPA), as well as another option in the fridge (Easy Hazy) is another improvement on my own club.

Jaysus Ron, that list would rival one of my better years. Not sure I will see Bandon but would love to hear your thoughts if you haven't already done so.

How did you find Tobacco Rd? I loved it, and thought Pinehurst No 2 a bit boring im comparison. I can barely remember the holes, but at Tobacco i can remember almost every shot.

Bandon was exceptional. Essentially a greatly scaled up Barnbougle. The 5 courses were all very different which surprised me and TBH probably all better than the two at Barny, but that’s hard to quantify. Pac Dunes was the standout for me but ranking the rest would be tough. Only course I didn’t play was Preserve (the short course) because I decided to play Pac again instead. The accommodation was perfect. Everything you need and nothing you don’t. Range of dining options but I just went to the pub every night. Shuttles everywhere. Everything just worked like a well oiled machine and it’s all so self contained you never have to worry about anything. Beats having to move hotels every couple of days. And this time of year it’s cheap too. Accommodation was $100 per night. First round was $100, second round was $50. Only issue with this time of year is daylight. 2/3 arvo rounds I only got 16 holes in. Other glaring issue is how far it is from Aus. If you’re already in the US it’s easy enough though. All in all, it’s just Disneyland for golfers. Would love to go back with a group. Vic Champs - Bandon 2025?

It blew me away. It’s almost as much a theme park or safari as a golf course. Never seen anything like it. Most aesthetically pleasing course I can imagine and just gets you to hit one incredible shot after another. I really loved it. Agree with you about comparison to no 2. No 2 is a very good golf course, but it’s just a golf course. Tobacco is an experience. I know that makes me sound like a wanker, but I don’t care.

I concur! I want to try the other Mike Stranz courses, 3 i think ( though i think only one is nearly as good as TR). Shame he died so young, the James Dean of golf course designers.

Another course that I haven't played for over a decade, and I really enjoyed the course, although it may be biased opinion from playing well on the day. The whole course was in great condition, with just the 10th fairway seeming a bit dodgy with weeds throughout it. I played from the black tees, which ruined the option of taking on the water on 14, but also brought the island for the 16th into play, which is OOB for non back marker days. I chose not to take on the clearance of 200m, into the wind, to the island, and went for the safety of the usual fairway; I hooked it into the water anyway.

I didn't spot any water taps on course until the 16th, which was annoying, and you don't really pass the clubhouse when you go from the 9th to 10th, although you can deviate to it. You do pass it after 12 holes though.

Balter XPA on tap again was good enough for a hot post round drink, but Kilkenny and Guinness were there as options for a cooler day.

Played at Wantima a week and a half ago for only the second time. Fairway condition wasn't overly impressive, and neither was the smell wafting over in the back corner, but besides that it was enjoyable course with a good mix of holes. If they really wanted to, they could change around the order of holes easily, as there is a common crossover point for several holes.

A $5.50 schooner of Mornington Peninsula's Pale Ale was the best craft beer option on tap for a golf club that I've seen this year.

With 6 months out having a stem cell transplant, I think I did pretty well! Look out 2023!
