    How did you go?
Went from 55 rounds in 2020 to 25 this year, largely due to the Sydney lockdown and changing jobs. I enjoyed it as I always do, but in the whole it feels like a year lost.

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?
No. Handicap went up by a shot, and my golf was pretty inconsistent. Rounds of 14 holes in +2 or 3 and + 9 or 10 the other four became common again, which I need to continue to work away from. It all boils down to driving it in play.

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?
Backwards, but I feel like in doing that I learned some lessons that will help it go forward in 2022.

Are there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share?
Went around RM East in 75 and barely missed a shot — 11 fairways, 12 greens. Also made a few 10-12 footers late to keep the card clean.

Did you play some great courses?
I played NSW 21 times and RM East, Victoria, Bonnie Doon and Kareela once each.

    Handicap
    Started on: 2.4
No. of rounds: 25 (15 comp)
    Highest Handicap: 3.6
    Lowest Handicap: 2.1.
    Finished on: 3.4.

What are your goals for 2022?
End the year under 3.0 handicap
    Shoot under par again
    Play 60 rounds
    Practice 15 times

    Got any golfing holidays planned?
Masters trip in April inc two weeks of golf around Pinehurst, Charleston, Aiken and Atlanta. Just need the pandemic to cooperate. Would like to play PK North and Cape Wickham.

Have a particular course lined up to play?
The Masters trip should hopefully include six of the World Top 100, which would get me to about 35 of the current list played. Fingers crossed.

I also have for a decade wanted to go back out and see a volunteer-run course called Henbury (in Kandos, Central West NSW) which I used to play in Blue Mountains pennant and recall being really cool. Also want to go play Duntryleague in Orange.

You should also get to the course closer to your tee time and ease off on the warm up.

    How did you go?
Good enough. Handicap went slightly backwards at the end of the year, but I am ok. More shots, more fun, right?
Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?
I managed to formalise WFH Wednesday, with an 11:30 start. That’s a win. I played the Gold Creek, Fairbairn and Shoalhaven Heads opens, and the Seahorse at Narooma. Got my Tassie trip in, and just did a 6 day trip to the Murray.
Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?
A little bit backwards, but my appreciation of the game grew
Are there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share?
Tassie trip in January – even up to the day of the trip, borders and travel were looking dodgy. But we got there, even if I ran away from the VicHealth lass who wanted to quarantine me for a fortnight…
Did you play some great courses?
Hell yes. Wickham, Ocean Dunes, Barney, Lost Farm. And walked Bougal Run. I’ll be back soon. Three rounds at Narooma for the Seahorse Classic was also great.

What are your goals for 2022?
Get back into the 7s. Its not far away. Play more local opens.

    Got any golfing holidays planned?
Nope. NZ got canned a few months back. Will still aim to crack 20 tracks again next year.

Have a particular course lined up to play?

Nope. Might go for a 100km drive on NYE to Crookwell to play the nearest course I have never played, just for shits and giggles.

The year went better than expected.

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?
No, I fancied myself to win the clubbies but wasn't to be.

    How did you go?
Overall, more consistently than the previous year, which I am happy with.

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?
At the start of the year my aim was to end the year on a lower handicap than the previous year. As the year progressed I narrowed my goal to finishing the year with a handicap index starting with a 10. I came close, which I was satisfied with.

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?
    Forwards.

Are there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share?
Highlight of the year was catching up with the usual suspects that were able to make the journey north to play in the City of Cairns.

Did you play some great courses?
    Half Moon Bay

I say that just to have a dig at LeftyHoges, Sundayhack, and any other of the Ozgolf crew that dislike the place.

    Serious answer - No.

    Lowest Handicap:
    10.8

    Finished on:
    11.2

    ---------------

What are your goals for 2022?
To try and maintain my consistency given the limited amount of time I have to practice and, to just play more golf. I would also like to end the year with a handicap index in the low 10s.

    Got any golfing holidays planned?
    No.

Have a particular course lined up to play?
    No.

Golf is, in part, a game; but only in part. It is also in part a religion, a fever, a vice, a mirage, a frenzy, a fear, an abscess, a joy, a thrill, a pest, a disease, an uplift, a brooding, a melancholy, a dream of yesterday and a hope for tomorrow. - New York Tribune, 1916.

    How did you go?
Poorly to very poorly, 43 years with a single digit handicap has come to an end.

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?
Didn't really set any goals other than to try and enjoy playing my own course more. On that note, failed to achieve. Need Dcanto to give me a shot of whatever allows him to play Half Moon Bay and stay sane.

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?
    Solidly in reverse

Did you play some great courses?
Had a game at Flinders which is a fantastic place to play and pretty much the only type of course I'm interested in.

Given our exorbitant fees, that's $170 per round and goes some way to my general dissatisfaction. Most decisions are made with a view to "prettying" up the course, nobody is prepared to address why we pay fees in the top 10 in Australia and the course can't get a start in the Top 100.

Usual yearly to Victoria GC and Bonville, no doubt I will weaken and go to the Gold Coast and like last time swear to never do it again.

On the overseas front, have a trip in August to the UK, basing ourselves near Ascot and then down to Sandwich for a few days. Itinerary is: New Zealand, Sunningdale, Berkshire, Worplesdon, Walton Heath, St Georges Hill, Hankley Common, Cinque Ports, St Georges, Princes.

    How did you go?
Pretty steady through most of the year. Really solidified over the closing few months, halving my handicap in the process and finishing on my lowest mark ever (2.3). Looking back it wasn't so long ago where getting so low was only a pipe dream.

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?
    Well & truly exceeded expectations.

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?
    Forwards, with a bullet.

Are there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share?
    • A bogey-free 71 (-1) round back in January. I always thought I had the potential to put a round like this together, but I never would have thought it would happen away from my home course.
    • An awesome pre-CoC road trip to the Mackay Open, which resulted in playing a bunch of new courses on the trip back.
Did you play some great courses?
Nothing "great" in terms of course rankings, but had fun on some lesser-known country tracks (see above).
    ---------------

    Handicap
    Started on:
    4.5

    No. of rounds:
93 GL rounds, plus the usual assortment of 4BBB, Foursomes, Ambrose etc.

    Highest Handicap:
    5.7

    Lowest Handicap:
    2.3

    Finished on:
    2.3

    ---------------

What are your goals for 2022?
Rinse & repeat from the last x years. The same as usual… more consistency, and make the Club Champs Matchplay (top 16 gross).
A decent showing at the CoC would also be nice.

    Got any golfing holidays planned?
Too early to call. Keen to get over to King Island & NZ at some point, but may not happen in 2022.

Have a particular course lined up to play?
Just the dozen or so local tracks.

    How did you go?

Not very good, really. As readers of my other posts will know, I sustained a back injury in August. It still isn't cured, and may never be. I'm managing, but not thriving, as a result.

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?

No. An unforeseen injury event affected everything from that point onward. The foreseen event of Covid-19 didn't help much, either.

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?

Right now, a long way backwards. There is always hope for the future.

Are there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share?

Is a 24 point score worth sharing? It is when it is the first round played for 3 months after sustaining a serious back injury. I've never been so happy with such a low score. I also recorded a 38 point round since my back injury that I was very pleased much.

But the undoubted highlight of the year was my drive off the 18th tee at Royal Adelaide. It only went about 200m, but it was on the fairway, and longer than any other qualified drive of the SA Ozgolfers. My first ever long drive prize. Nothing I achieve in golf from this point will ever top that.

Did you play some great courses?

Royal Adelaide will probably always be my favourite course. Last March the fairways were almost certainly the best fairways I've ever played on. I felt guilty taking divots.
    ---------------

    Handicap
    Started on: 7.2

    Number of rounds:
42 on golflink, which includes 4 rounds where rain stopped play, but the card went in.

    Highest handicap:
    7.9

    Lowest handicap:
    6.0

    Finished on:
7.9 which just went up 0.8 in one round.

    ---------------

What are your goals for 2022?

To play golf. Since my back injury I'm just trying to get out there and play. Golf and the associated exercise actually seems to have a positive effect on my back, and it definitely has a positive effect on my mental and physical health. The scores are secondary, but it is so frustrating to have 39 putts when all I'm trying to do is enjoy the day out.

    Got any golfing holidays planned?

Sadly, at this point my back and hip make it impossible to play two days in a row, so there will be no SA Champs, or anything else of that nature for me.

    How did you go?
Rollercoaster. The good was GREAT, started solidly, played the best golf of my life through April and May.
Maintained it until we were locked down at the start of August. Came back after 2 months of said lockdown and have been poo ever since.

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?
Yes - aim was to get to 0.0, which I technically did if my 2 rounds at Barnbougle were entered into Golflink (official low was 0.6). Only held it for a couple of weeks until it fluctuated between 0.6 and 1.1 for a month or so.

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?
The forwards were GIANT leaps, but the backwards were also GIANT leaps (or at least it feels like it).
Managed to shoot my best and worst scores all in the space of 7 months...

Are there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share?
Going -1 at Lost Farm, then following it up with a +1 at Dunes the next day.
I had a bone to pick with these courses after they tore me a new a$$hole 2 years ago. Redemption was oh so sweet !!

Won our A Grade matchplay (top 8 from clubbies in 2020) which got my name on the honourboard.

Had my first hole in one on 24 June. That brought a tear (or ten) to my eye.

Did you play some great courses?
Peninsula Kingswood North almost goes to the top of the list. An absolutely STUNNING course and facility.
Barnbougle Dunes and Lost Farm (2nd time I'd played these)
    Victoria GC

Of that, I have no doubt.

Weird year again. Not a lot of golf played, but that’s pretty standard. COVID lockdown and border closures killed things off for a while too. I bought plenty of gear to tinker with throughout the year though which was probably the highlight.

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?
Only thing I wanted to achieve was to do a few interstate trips, which didn’t happen. Otherwise my key to golfing happiness is to have no expectations. In the immortal words of Homer Simpson “you tried your best and failed. The lesson is, never try”.

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?
GL says forwards but it certainly feels like backwards.

Are there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share?
Playing Concord the day after the final round of the NSW open with the same setup was fun.

Did you play some great courses?
Great in a rankings sense not so much, but even with limited opportunities I was pretty happy to play some really interesting new courses including Belmont, Duntryleague, Bondi Diggers, Brisbane and Concord. Sneaking in a another round at Maleny a couple of days ago was great too, even with the insane rain and headless bunker snakes.

What are your goals for 2022?
Have just changed clubs so I’d settle for playing more often, even if it’s just there for the most part. And to relinquish my timeshare on haters island, no matter how good the deck scene is there. I’d have to build a golf room to maintain membership anyway, which seems like a lot of work…

    Got any golfing holidays planned?
No point planning more than a week ahead at the moment. But getting north to CoC would be great and theoretically I have a US trip lined up in late 2022 so depending on the state of the world by then maybe something there. If I can launch a sneaky raid into Tassie at some point that would be a bonus too.

Have a particular course lined up to play?
I’ll let the COVID gods decide that. At minimum will try to always pack my clubs for the work trips to Central-West, Hunter, Mid-North Coast & ACT so I can tick off a few more while I’m there.
Cinderella story, out of nowhere, former greenskeeper, now about to become a Masters champion..... It looks like a mirac.. It's in the hole! It's in the hole!

    How did you go?
It was a good golf year, compared to previous years. Played plenty and occasionally good.
I now practice on a regular basis, and try to focus on the trouble areas, but it hasn't been overly effective yet.

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?
Mostly, but then got too ambitious mid-year, at which point I stagnated.
The goals set were the following:

    - Play golf regularly
    - Get a club membership again
    - Try out for the pennant team
    - Improvement would be nice, and I will work on it, which isn't something that I have really done in the past

I got a club membership, and I'm definitely a regular golfer now, playing nearly every weekend. I didn't try out for pennant, because the I found out that the level was better than when I was previously in the side, and didn't want to lose six consecutive Sundays anyway.
I definitely improved from the start of the year, which I guess is a good thing. However, I haven't got my game back to where it was 6 years ago, which I thought I was on the way to. Best rounds were a couple of +3 rounds at my home course.

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?
Definitely forwards from the start of the year, and I think there is a decent base there to work with. I just need to get things to come together more often in rounds.

Are there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share?
That usually comes with travelling and playing with other OZgolfers. That didn't really happen in 2021. Nothing else stands out as "outstanding", but I did have a day where I played 45 holes solo across four different courses.

Did you play some great courses?
No great courses this year, but I did play a bunch of new courses this year, particularly west of Brisbane, and a few down Gold Coast way. That was fun.

    ---------------

    Handicap
    Started on:
    10.0

    No. of rounds:
23 rounds in Golflink, but at least 55 overall (I stopped wasting money on comps in the last quarter of the year).

    Highest Handicap:
    10.4

    Lowest Handicap:
    7.8

    Finished on:
    8.3

    ---------------

What are your goals for 2022?
Improve. Hit it straighter and hit it further. I don't want to put a handicap number on it, but I would like my game to be better more often. I'll get lessons this year, continue practicing and working on strength.

    Got any golfing holidays planned?
I hope to take my clubs on any domestic work trips that happen this year, and they are starting to back up. I am supposed to have short trips to Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth, and a longer one to Adelaide.
It would be great if there was a OZgolf event that could be travelled to this year.

Have a particular course lined up to play?
In my mind, I want to go to Barnbougle and play Lost Farm, and the Dunes again. No set plan for it though.

    How did you go?
    Steady

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?
    Kind of.

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?
I would say forwards, a little bit. Scores didn't necessarily reflect it but I have noticed improvement in a few areas. Just need to start putting it all together.

Are there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share?
I won my first weekend competition a few weeks ago.

Royal Pines, Byron Bay and Murwillumbah were the picks for me this year.

    How did you go?
Strange year. 2020 was a disaster due to a shoulder injury which lingered into 2021. Lockdowns forced me to stop playing which was a blessing as it let my body heal. Came good in the back half of 2021. Overall positive year.

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?
Yeah pretty much just wanted to play without pain and get my swing back to a point where I could start getting my hcap back to where it was pre-injury.

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?
    Forwards.

Are there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share?
Made my first eagle, that's about it.

Go past my lowest point (13.5) and become a little more consistent.

I'll head to Warrnambool later in the month for 5 nights. So will be looking to play Port Fairy and Warrnambool while I'm there.

See above. Keen to get back to PF.

    How did you go?

I would say my most successful year ever. I achieved my long term goal which was to break par in a Comp Round, had my first Hole in One, got my handicap down to 1 and played the most consistent stretches stretches of golf ever.

From the 19th September thru 31st December I played 20 comp rounds with only 3 in the 80’s (87,82,82). In the same period my Handicap dropped from 5.5 to 1.0.

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?

    Yes - goal #1 was shoot under par - 25/09/2021 shot 2 under 70/64 for 44pts
    - goal #2 was to get better - as close to scratch as possible - managed a streak of flagged rounds culminating in finishing 1.0 for the year.
    - goal #3 was a Hole in One - 17th April 161m with a 5i

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?

Definitely forwards. Once I made the decision to see a proper coach and we enacted a plan my game turned almost immediately and I started seeing results. I even had more fun as a result.

Are there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share?

Clear 2 - my hole in one and shooting under par for the first time. The under par round was particularly memorable because of the way I held it together when I realised on 16th tee what my score was. I got incredibly nervous. It’s a tough drive on 16 - especially if you are nervous as I was. From that experience I most certainly grew from it because I’ve been knocking on the door to going really low ever since.

Did you play some great courses?

Not as many as I’d like, but did play RQ a half dozen times, Royal Canberra was a highlight as well as was Brisbane GC.

    ---------------

What are your goals for 2022?

    #1 Break 70 - then go lower
#2 Get to scratch, then play to a +1/+2 - by doing that I’ll achieve….
#3 Be able to select myself form the A Grade Pennant side

    Got any golfing holidays planned?

Only CoC in August is set in stone.

Others in the pipeline - Adelaide, Barny, possibly a trip to WA

Have a particular course lined up to play?

Negative - I’m hoping to get home to WA sometime late in 2022. I’d love to get to my old junior track with my Dad (Wanneroo CC) and I definitely want to play Royal Adelaide again.
