    Default Social Golf Australia membership

    Hi all
Thinking of getting my handicap after a 20 year handicap hiatus. I don't really want to tie myself to a particular club/course though. Does anyone have theirs through SGA? Are there a lot of clubs that don't let SGA members play in their comps? I the whole SGA thing frowned upon or generally OK??
I'm in south west Sydney, Liverpool LGA.
    Cheers

    Hi and welcome Aladdin

I have had the SGA membership before, and it was mostly fine in Brisbane, except some clubs charged a little more for the competitions. I can't comment on how it will be accepted in Sydney.

Thanks Andy. Yeah I anticipated comp fee's would be higher, but that's OK. I'd only be doing a few a year.

A SGA player took the spare spot in our Sunday comp group. He said a few clubs don't let him play, but didn't name them nor the reason.

He would have paid $50 for a weekend game at Lynwood, which I assume did not include his comp fee (approx. $15).
You don't get me. I'm part of the Union.

Yeah Dotty I thought that might be the case at certain places. I've been looking at The Ridge which is close enough to me & really in the grand scheme of club memberships is quite inexpensive.

My gut tells me members of 'real' clubs are probably better received at other club comps, so long as there is a spare spot.

I've signed up with SGA. I'd like to get back into a proper membership and play Saturday comps again, but I need to see if I enjoy playing again before committing that much cash.

    Welcome back.

Or if like buttons are more your thing, try this site:
    https://www.facebook.com

I regularly play with my neighbour at Wolston Park, and comps are optional when we play. I think it is $25 for visitors for the comp, which is cheaper than the social green fee.

I looked at the OzGolf FB page, but there's no Marketplace.

Wolly Park sounds great some sunny Sunday. Are you a member there still?

I looked at joining Gailes, but it's $1750, and I'm not quite ready for that just yet. I'm living back in Goodna.

We both did. I'm a chalkie now too.

I've been back two years, just haven't been playing. Kinda lost interest tbh. I played in 2016 when I did my Grad Dip and enjoyed it, but have just been too busy on weekends to get out and play.

Welcome back!! I recently just started playing again. I ended up getting a country membership at City GC., Toowoomba as I’m up there at least once a month. Cheaper than a metro Brisbane membership and I can still play comps at a metro reciprocal club if there’s a spare spot.

Not "still", but "again". Had five years or so away, but kept a handicap through SGA then a handicap maintenance membership at Gailes.

Joined WP mid last year on a gateway membership (26 comps per year) for $495, and have played a lot more than expected since.

That's great you're playing plenty of golf. Your kids must be at the same stage as mine and coming out the other side of the heavy weekend commitments. We mainly run ours to/from their casual jobs these days.

I still have to pull my finger out and get one of these, or the Gailes option. My daughter's boyfriend and some of his brothers have memberships at TGC up here so I could have the odd game with them.

That gateway membership looks like a really good idea I think I’ll switch to that next year as well AndyP. Been seeing you around a bit lately to but wasn’t sure you would recognise me so didn’t yell out

Since you're in the approximiate area, try calling Sefton Golf club and asking about membership... unless things have changed you get a Golf link and the cost for a years membership is very close to an SGA membership lol....

The other thing I've been looking at, is maybe a membership at somewhere like Oakey or Goombungee. My thought being with one of these handicap management memberships, it seems you have to pay the social game fees plus the comp fees when playing as a visitor at a course (justified, I believe). But as a member of I've of these smaller country courses, would this be the case? Our would it just be the comp fees on an open day? I mean, it would only take 5 comp games in a year and is be ahead of an sga type membership.

I don't think there are many that hit you up for full green fee, plus comp fee.
