New player handicap process
Hi All
I've just taken up golf about 5 months ago. As I'm progressing have an eye on getting handicapped when I'm good enough to.
I currently go around socially with a mate with best score 99 for full 18. I've shot a 46 as best for 9 holes. My worst is still over a 100 and for 9 around the 50 mark.
Question is how good do you have to be, without wasting anyone's time,to get a handicap through a club?
Thank you

Your level of golf is irrelevant. You can have 110 and play quickly or 80 and play slowly. Don’t play slowly.
Enjoy it.

That makes great sense. I'll take it pretty easy and get a feel for it initially. Maybe some.mid week comps in the country that won't be too busy either might help.

From my experience a few years ago it takes a little while to get used to playing in a normal weekend comp. It's hard not to be a bit self conscious, if you're not sure about something just ask your playing partner.

It also pays to suffer through reading the rule book, the pro shop should be about to give you one. You don't need to remember everything, being aware of most of the rules will help though.

Easier to download the rules app to your phone.
Maybe familiarise yourself with some of the more comment rules scenarios, such as, lost ball, hitting it in water or out of bounds, etc.
Actually, Golf Australia have a page for you: Quick guide to the rules of golf - Golf Australia

Its a club comp. They happen every week.
Nobody likes club tossing, cat kicking 36 handicappers. You are off 36 because you are not very good yet.
All cats are ****s. The harder the kick the better.

As above... no one else gives a shit about your score (unless you happen to be playing for money, but best leave that until you have a steady handicap). The most important thing that your playing partners will judge you on is your ability to keep up with the pace of play. That means being conscious of scoring formats (i.e. picking up when you can't score any points in a stableford round), as well as being constantly aware of your position on the course. Above all, enjoy yourself. Golf is fun!
