New to golf and handicap
Hi All
I've been getting back into golf the last 4 months. Played socially 15 years ago but never comp or had handicap
How good do you or should you be before thinking about getting a handicap?
I'm just breaking 100 now.
Do clubs have divisions or different sections for higher handicaps?
I live in regional Vic.
Keen to hear
Cheers

Most club comps will be graded. If you're breaking 100, you'll have no problems (although expect to shoot higher in comps until you get used to it). Go for it, it's great fun.

You don’t have to be good. Just, for God’s sake, don’t be slow.

Go for it. I play socially as well but I joined the club I worked at years ago last year so I could play competitive rounds on the weeks the social club isn't on. It's good fun, and I also have a choice of when I play, like today in the afternoon instead of getting up in darkness 😂
Unfortunately when I played my three rounds to get my handicap I had a bit of a day out on the third round and ended up with a stupid low handicap of 12, when it probably should have been where it is now around 18-19.

Get out there. Don’t worry about your scores. Just play.
Usually three divisions based on handicaps.
Breaking 100 is fine. That’s a large portion of golfers 👍

You can still join a club and not play competition. I've stopped playing comps at my home club recently, and instead just benefit from the "pre-paid" golf.

Pdiddy, once you get past a double bogey, pickup your ball (unless you have a putt remaining for one point stableford, then take it quickly).
Deep down nobody gives a shit what you scored.
Pace of play is paramount

Thank so much for all this
Apologies for late response, just figured out how to view replies.
I'll guess I'll just keep the ball moving in some way, shape or form.
Also, is there usually a person in the groups to help with rules and all that side of it??
Looking at signing up at my home town club in the country initially

People in the group will help with rules. Often they’ll be incorrect so it pays to check after your round, so you know next time.

Fantastic help. Will hopefully build a but of knowledge around the rules etc. As I get into a bit more.
Are players generally ok if you are really bad? Key being not to be slow. Are there divisions for different caps?

There usually are. At my club they have different grades on Saturdays when the comp has like 200 players in it, the Sunday one is small so no grades. Not sure about weekdays as I hardly play those. The groups themselves aren't necessarily graded though, I've been in groups with scratch players and high handicaps. There tends to be a fair bit of ready golf to keep the pace moving.

Being fast is the key, use cheap balls so that way you don’t get precious when they go missing.
I used to play with a 33hcp player. Lovely guy, played fast and knew when to pickup.
Golf is such a selfish game so deep down nobody really cares about your ability. If anybody gives you stick simply find their name on the membership listing and put a black mark next to it. It’s easy to avoid playing with the teasers

I went to a golf camp 20 years ago in Mirboo North. Didn't mind the track, bloody hilly though. Mountain goat country.

Yeah it's pretty hilly! I played Korumburra for the first time recently and have to say that that course is probably more hilier than Mirboo. Brutal. And played terrible so not that keen to return!

Yes Korumburra is definitely hillier than Mirboo North. I remember playing 36 holes there in a District Championship. It nearly killed me!
