Default WTF with golf club pricing ?

Geez, i go away for a few years and come back to $700+ drivers ?

Not sure if this has been discussed but when i left - $399 for a driver was sort of the norm for a premium shafted piece of kit.

There are people online selling X22 Callaways for $600 for a set of irons that are old enough to vote. $2K for USED Ap2's. 3 woods for $550 ??

Without sounding like a cranky old man... what the hell happened, did everything turn JDM import?

PXG sold clubs at twice everyone else, so they jumped on the bandwagon. And yea it's a crapload of money for a new driver.

Dunno if you are specifically talking about Ebay, but the prices people are asking on there are bonkers - I can’t remember the last time I bought a club off Ebay. Equally though, just cause people are asking these prices doesn’t mean that they actually sell much. Out of curiosity, I have tracked a number of outrageously priced clubs/sets, and they don’t attract a bid and just keep getting automatically re-listed for months on end. Absolutely no idea what this achieves.

Some sellers like the guys below list clubs with ridiculous prices hoping someone is desperate to buy a certain club.

    https://www.ebay.com.au/sch/Golf/151...n_group&_sac=1

Many manufacturers are quoting at least 4-6 weeks for all custom orders that have to be built overseas.

This seller on Gumtree is pretty hopeful:

Only played two rounds with marks on 3 clubs, must have had air swings with the other 4.

When i first started playing Golfworld wanted $1000 for the original Great Big Bertha. So sounds like we have gone full circle.

Huh - glad I am not the only one who found that. That was one of the sellers that led me to work out how to exclude sellers from ever appearing in my searches.

They are seriously taking the pi$$ with those prices, I wonder how much they actually sell per week.

It’s a bit of shock yes. I remember my last set of irons taylormade irons costing me $900 and a callaway driver and match 3 wood was $500. At that time I was worried I spent to much. Fast forward to this year and it’s now $800 a driver and $2000 for irons in just glade I didn’t like any of the up-charge options. Really is making it a hard sport to get started in for the average joe

Totally agree. The market is overpriced. Some second hand stuff is ridiculous…

I guess people are willing to pay those prices. Golf is booming, people are paying that much and waiting months for delivery. You can still get good stuff for reasonable prices - $160/iron isn't bad for srixon zx5/zx7.

That was one plus for me sold same clubs for $350 and I had a good 10yr use. $900 minus $350 I was pretty happy with $55 a year for usage

AUD has deflated by about 30% in 8 years. Thats probably the difference.
I am noticing that a lot more stuff is now being sold here for about the same as it costs in the states. Probably can thank Golf Box et al for that.

Now go try and get a price on Gripmaster grips, you gunna blow a gasket.

Thanks boys, i didnt think i was going mad - going for the idea that PXG and exchange rate have caused the increase - add that it is pretty much the only sport you can play in COVID and i guess it is a perfect storm.

Guess i will be playing with my old Mizuno irons for a bit longer.

[QUOTE=virge666;1449498]……. - add that it is pretty much the only sport you can play in COVID and i guess it is a perfect storm./QUOTE] Not down here under Dan Andrews. My house backs onto my golf course and I can only look out the window at it….. and I’m 300 k’s away from the nearest Covid case. Instead of playing, I spend my time looking at overpriced golf clubs on the internet.

Welcome back, Virge, and it must feel like you have returned to The Jetsons.

When you left, Pureform and Scotty Cameron were the trailblazers in justifying the higher prices for better results.
The OEMs and retailers have simply followed suit. The pinnacle is probably Odyssey doing a Ford Mustang with last year's 'new' White Hot range.

Without cheap superseded and second hand models to muck around with, it has even slowed down my buying. (Although, I did buy a new $750 driver in 2019, when the launch monitor told me that the previous year's 'internet darling' superseded demo was no improvement on the super-superseded equivalent that I had been using for the past 2 years.)

p.s. Golf trolleys can now cost over $2k.
You don't get me. I'm part of the Union.

This is more like it Dotty.. I dont seem to be able to buy 3 year old Mizuno or P770 irons for under a $1200 - I paid $400 for my last set of irons. (825 forged)

That has got me a few times.. Mizuno 919 forged for $699 - then realise it is 7-GW... WTF do i do with 7-GW ?

    You sure?

I seem to remember some super shaft in it at the time that was the big upsell... We all put Graf Blue's in them. (757 Speeder Shaft ??? I think)

What about the rest of the set?
    Forum needs more banter.
