    Default WDYSTM - July 2021

04/07/2021, Wolston Park GC, Blue Tees, Stableford.

    Stats: 6/11 fairways, 7/18 greens, 31 putts.
    Score: PbPPBBPPB PPPBBBPXB; 37:38:75 (+2:+6:+8); stab 18:15:33pts.
    Played to 10.6. Golflink: 8.4 (+0.2).

After a terrible last round, I focused on two things for today's round, which was to not have beer the night before (for better sleep), and relax my arms pre-swing. It led to a much improved round, especially the start. I faded late, and the short game wasn't good enough to make up for it, but I'll take that after an 86 last time.

While my stats program tells me that I need to improve on the 100-150m range shot, I'd rather focus on greenside chipping this week. There are too many options that I'm playing with now; different clubs, front foot, back foot, open face, etc. I don't play enough for all of that variety, so I need to make sure that I am good at just a couple of different shots.

Next round: Same time, same place, next Sunday.

I was up at Maroochy River today with the social club after not playing last week, very nice course. I was off 19 today and hit 88/69 for 39 points and the win. 7/14 fairways, just the 4 greens, 31 putts including a couple of long ones which were satisfying to see drop, especially the one for birdie. I expected to be rusty and so it was, mis-hitting a fair few, distance control way off on pitches, starting with 3 double bogeys in a row before getting things back on track when I got the coordination back and improved pitching.

With all the water on just about every hole and the two weeks without a game I expected to lose a few balls but in the end only 2 were left behind. Pretty happy with it today, next week back at Oxley in the Saturday comp.

1 over net score in the monthly medal this weekend. A triple on the 3rd (I'm blaming a plugged bunker lie) and a double on the 10th was always going to make scoring difficult.

The driver deserted me for most of the round but came good for the longest drive comp on the 17th

This is a rare boast post from me.

Firstly, I'd like to say how good it was to be outside in the sunshine again after 5 straight days of cold and wet. It was like being in full lockdown.

38 points doesn't really sound like a game worth boasting about, but my second nine was full boast material. After a standard poor 16 points on the first nine, something clicked on the second shot of the 10th hole, and I played great from that point on. The major highlight was 3 birdies in 4 holes, all with putts between 20 and 30 feet, and all big breakers where I got the speed perfect. I don't think I've ever had a putting run like it before.

I haven't investigated my golflink details, but for a reason I don't understand I got 2 extra shots back in one go, meaning my first round off 9 for a very long time. The consequence of that is a 35 point score isn't very satisfying.

I did enjoy the two extra shots, and got 3 pointer pars on both extra holes, but less enjoyable were the two dropped shots on the last two holes. On the back nine I parred all five shot holes, but had bogies on 3 of the four supposedly easy holes where I didn't get shots.

Hopefully the handicap rot has stopped, so I can avoid the slippery slope into double figures.

Dusted off the clubs for a hit with a mate at St Andrews Beach yesterday. Glorious sunshine and I actually hit the ball really well apart from the inevitable train wreck holes where I had a 10, 9 and 8.

30 points with 5 wipes. 4 pars, 1 birdie on 17 where I drove into the fairway bunker (OK drive followed by a typical sideways bounce that made my mate laugh heartily as it turned like a Warnie legspinner and rolled 30m sideways into the only pot on the fairway). No lost balls, although I did almost kill some people on an adjacent (OK, adjacent by about 60m) tee box twice after I backed up a wayward 4 hybrid with an equally wayward provisional. No change to my handicap that hasn't moved in two years.

StAB is still a great track.

I still remember your eagle there from one of the rounds of my first ever Vic Champs. I'd happily play that course on repeat.

81 for 35 points today at Stirling GC.
9/14 fairways which was a highlight.
    4/18 greens not so much
Birdied 16 and 18 which was very nice.
Played well but a slump from 11-15 cost me a mid 70 and 40 point round.

I played in the monthly medal at Oxley yesterday, and had a terrible round (102/85). Don't know why but I just couldn't get my swing going and repeatedly pulled or hooked left. In amongst the rubbish I did manage two birdies and a par, so that was something positive to take away from it. 🙄

Single Stableford again at Half Moon Bay yesterday. 39 points - played really well in parts but again 2 bad holes and it was a case of what could have been. Still happy overall.

11/07/2021, Wolston Park GC, Blue Tees, Stableford.

    Stats: 6/11 fairways, 3/18 greens, 28 putts.
    Score: PPPXXBPPP PXBPXXPBP; 40:41:81 (+5:+9:+14); stab 15:14:29pts.
    Played to 15.8. Golflink: 8.4 (+0.0).

Back to having beer and no sleep before a round, so back to playing bad. I was going to work on my chipping during the week, however I changed my mind, and ended up chipping very well anyway, getting chips to tap-in distance several times. Instead, I did what my analytics app told me to do and worked on my approach shots. By the end of the practice session, I was hitting great irons. This didn't materialise into great approaches in today's round, as apparently they matched the quality of a 24 capper.

Next round: Sunday at WP again, although later, it will be the day after a craft beer event. Maybe I should just play a social round, and not enter the comp.

    Social 18 at Alice Springs
    92 Gross.
Few moments of brilliance, promptly followed up by a 10.
Greens were like concrete. Super fast. Overall happy with the round.

I had an eagle today. For those who can reach par 5's in two recording an eagle is no big deal, but I can't do that, so holing a full shot is a big deal. 7 iron from 130, trickled in on its last roll. I think this is eagle number 13 in my golfing life.

Nothing else of note though in my 32 point round today.

Eagles are rare enough even if you can get there in 2, a hole-out is pretty special. Well done.

Trash golf continues, can't even break 80 at the moment.

BbXbPPBXB-PXbPPxBPB bleh... I just can't eliminate the blow-ups, where I make a mistake then follow it up with more mistakes, particularly around the green. Might take a few weeks off.

A few highlights to keep me interested I guess - On the 2nd in 2 after a good drive & 5w, 2 putt birdie; Driver to 70m out on 4 but had to hit a low pitch under a tree branch overhanging the left side of the fairway, ran a PW up to about 6 inches; Nice 20+ foot birdie putt on 12.

27 points. 38 putts. I hit the ball fairly well, but couldn't get it into the hole. I hate this game sometimes.

Your making birdies so all is not going that bad.
Your not getting trapped trying to fix a poor position with one shot compounding the problem are you?

First comp round in about 3-4 years. First time playing 18 at Tasmania.
29 Points (off 9) after starting with a wipe (hit first drive OOB). Was pretty happy with how I played, putted ok, mixed some good driving with some bad.

Was surprised at the length of the course, especially the back nine. It will be super tough when the wind gets up.

Whatever it was it would have been one fewer without the airy.
