    Default WDYSTM - April 2021

Oh, I get to start this thread!

    PPPPPPbBP-PBPBBPPBP - 75/35 points

Bit of a let down, got on the bogey train on the back 9 and struggled to get off. Hit driver well, wedges still have room to improve.

Thanks. Handicap went up 0.5 though because a played to 0 flag came off . Hopefully I can play ok at Blackwood on Monday, not a course I've scored well at previously.

02/04/2021, Virginia GC (Heritage 19-27), Social.

    Stats: 3/7 fairways, 2/9 greens, 15 putts.
    Score: BBBXbPPBP; 40 (+5). Played to 7.2. SCH 7.9 (+0.0)

This was garbage compared to Wednesday on a garbage course. I decided to wear a long sleeved shirt that I've hardly worn to test it out. Big fail! It felt quite restrictive around the shoulders and in the arms, which threw me off, then screwed with me mentally. The swing was off, and the greens were crap, so I couldn't get those shots back on the green. I'll throw this one in the bin.

My highlight was hitting a big 6 iron hook around a tree blocking my approach. I never have a problem hitting fades or slices, but I've never been able to draw or hook on command. Practicing some Adam-Way at Gailes the other day seems to have paid off.

Next round: Sunday comp and Nudgee, potentially in the rain.

04/04/2021, Nudgee (Gateway Temp 2), Stableford.

    Stats: 2/10 fairways, 8/18 greens, 30 putts.
    Score: PPPXPPPBP PBBBPXBBb; 38:41:79 (+5:+6:+11).
    Played to 9.2. Golflink 9.3 (-0.2). SCH 8.2 (+0.3)

After talking up my 200 steel as a fairway finder, it went terribly, as did the driver. I lost plenty of shots because of those clubs yesterday, including a quadruple bogey on the 4th after a tidy start.

Eight greens is a nice number to hit, but I realised afterwards that I hit all eight par 3 greens (-1 for par 3s), and not a single other green for the round. That's not great, but missing fairways doesn't help with that, and I had a few that landed on greens then ran off the back.

Next round: Looking for somewhere next Sunday before midday. Maybe the Championship course at Virginia.

    14/04/2021, Howeston (Weston/Westward), Solo.

    Stats: 6/14 fairways, 7/18 greens, 33 putts.
    Score: BXBPBPPBB BPPBPXPbB; 43:39:82 (+7:+4:+11).

No warmup, so the first few holes were very dodgy, but after that there was no excuse for how poorly I was hitting it. If the driver had a hosel, I would have had a couple of shanks with it too, not that the irons were that much better (but not shanking).

Hitting my third into the par 4 11th still 100m away, I flicked a switch and got the swing working properly most of the time, with just the occasional hiccup. 4 from 5 fairways and 6 from 7 greens after that. Putting was decent, but a little difficult to be consistent, when the greens were very dewy, then dried, plus the mowing was getting done, while I was there.

Hopefully I can catch any swing issues a little earlier in the next round.

Next round: Wynnum with a couple of OZgolf spunks.

18/04/2021, Wynnum GC, Blue Tees, Stableford.

    Stats: 7/13 fairways, 5/18 greens, 26 putts.
    Score: BXbXXbXPP XBPBPPPPb; 41:39:80 (+7:+3:+10); Stab 15:19:34pts.
    Played to 10.3. Golflink: 9.2 (-0.1). SCH: 8.2 (0.0)

I started with garbage ball striking off the soggy fairways, that saw two birdies amongst five double bogies for the first ten holes. It was really disappointing because the driver was having its best day for ages, and the irons were letting me down. I was much more consistent on the back nine, and managed just one over for the last eight to post a respectable score, which should be a flag for the handicap.

Edit: I just worked out that this is my lowest score at Wynnum. Nice!

I feel like I'm on the verge of having a really good round, especially with the number of birdies I've been making, but it just won't all come together for a full 18 at the moment.

Next round: Wolly Park next Monday is the plan.

26/04/2021, Wolston Park GC, Blue Tees, Stableford.

    Stats: 1/11 fairways, 4/18 greens, 27 putts.
    Score: PPPPBBPXB XPBPBPbPB; 37:40:77 (+5:+5:+10); Stab 17:16:33pts.
    Played to 11.6. Golflink: 9.2 (-0.0). SCH: 8.2 (-0.0)

Another ordinary start, but disguised by three consecutive sand save pars. There is no consistency with the irons or woods lately, so scoring was always going to be tough. I had a half decent run on the back nine to keep it a respectable score, and 10 over is pretty good considering there were two shanks and an OOB in there. I keep waiting for the good round to happen, but maybe I'm doomed to be consistently inconsistent.

    Next round: Ashgrove next Monday.

To put it bluntly I’ve played like sh!t since at least Nov.

Thanks to Bryden McPherson’s win on Sunday i went back and reviewed the Brad Hughes drills I had been doing last year. A couple of hours and a couple of Brookvales hitting balls last night was time well spent.

Best game in about 12 months.

    72(42pts) - 3 birdies and 3 bogies.

18 holes at Marion GC today 46/43 for 89 (+20)

Played better than the score would suggest, just a couple of 7s among bogeys, pars and 1 birdie on the 4th hole. Turns out missing the green on the 9th hole means your ball runs off 70m left down a hill... Quite harsh indeed. I enjoyed the course though and the views from the 2nd tee are probably the best in Metro Adelaide. The course is also quite good value - $26 for 18 holes.

The 9th at Marion is a tough hole. I won it in pennants with a double bogey.

I shot 85 at Blackwood today in the vardon - hit the ball well, putted ok, just got into some horrible positions and couldn't score. Bunker trouble too - got plugged in the face of two different bunkers! And smoked a 6 iron into the penalty area behind the 14th green - a 190m par 3! (Although slightly downhill)

Speaking of tricky holes the 14th at Blackwood looks harmless but you tend to walk off with bogey or worse often.

I was holding a bit too much tension in my upper body (upper arms & shoulders in particular), so I just focused on relaxing a little and swinging within myself.

A limoncello or two before the round might help too.

Well done on the comeback, and ending the run of those mid-20 scores.
