Default Any good club builders in SA...

Anyone out there know of a good club builder in SA?

Didn't have much luck when I asked about a fitter, so not holding out much hope for a builder... but if you never ask...

No...not many. I've heard decent things from Craig at Custom Fit Golf near paradise.

I've since started doing my own work because I don't trust anyone anymore after a few horror jobs by DG.

He is on my list to contact after I float this post for a while. I was planning on using DG at the range, but I'm a touch worried as I can't control who ends up doing them.

It all depends on what you need doing?
Shoot me a PM on what you need doing and I'll let you know if that's within the scope of what I have the gear and ability to do?

I've thought about getting the equipment to do this as well but the idea of bending hosels freaks me out a bit.
Bad enough if one of my own cracked or broke but doing stuff for mates would leave me more upset than the person who owns the club.

I think I remember Mike from TXG telling a story about when he was learning his club building. His teacher gave him an old Mizuno iron and told him to bend it took it broke. He was amazed how hard it was to get it to fail.

One thing I learnt from my studies in engineering is that all metal has a unique stress vs strain profile depending on the materials and the process of formation (forged/cast etc). Cast metals tend to be more brittle and failure will be quite sudden without very little elastic or plastic deformation occurring (search elastic vs plastic deformation if you are interested). If there are impurities in the casting then they are even more likely to fail given a certain amount of stress. Forgings tend to produce metals that can sustain more plastic deformation and therefore in the above context be bent to a new position without breaking or returning to the original position.

Some castings depending on the material and manufacturing quality seem to be able to be bent more than others but it can be a bit of gamble. Best to get advice from others who have bent the club in question before going more than a degree or 2.
