    Default WDYSTM - January 2021

Braved the showers at Reddy Bay to have 32 points to welcome the new year. Cracking shank off the tee on 6 (was the short tee so only 98m hole ...). Did play with a scratch marker who had 4 under which was great to watch.

Played 9 with a mate this morning. Pretty happy with 9 over, though sitting 80mtr from green, middle of fairway, on the par 5 last and taking 3 to get on with 3 putts wasn't how I wanted it to end. My garmin watch was useless. The course seems completely messed up on Garmin atm, with me 100's of mtrs from the 1st green when chipping on, and the holes just completely out of whack. Really struggled with distance control which I expected. Gonna try 9 at the other course next week.

    Monthly medal
9 over after 3,finished 15 over.Absolute brain farty on the par 3 3rd hole, when I missed a putt for bogey after being in the shite, smacked the ball away in anger only to realise I have to finish the hole.Never have I flushed a putter so well,40m off the green. In for 8.
Then rattled off 6 straight pars, then the rain came and made it a tad difficult. Then the siren went for the storm and a 45 min delay.
Happy to finish what was an eventful round.

    02/01/2021, Beaudesert GC, Stroke.

    Stats: 4/14 fairways, 8/18 greens, 34 putts.
    Score: PBBBBBPPP PXPPbBBBP; 41:42:83 (+5:+6:+11).

Another mid-30 point equivalent stableford score out at Beaudesert this morning, for 7 handicap flags in my last 8 rounds, but out 0.4 to 10.4. It should have been better, but I had a quad on 11, and I had too many putts. The greens were slow, and they would turn when the pace was off the putt, and I just couldn't get it to the hole hard enough, plus I had some bad reads anyway. Five of the birdie putts were very makeable, so it hurt to only walk away with one. According to stats, I lost about 6 shots to putting from my usual, while the rest of my game was better than normal.

Maybe I'll break through for a good score soon, as there are still areas of my game that are quite lacking.

Next round: I was considering going to Vic Park on Tuesday, but 5am just seems too early for me, so I'm better off practicing on Wednesday, and saving it for next weekend.

    12/01/2021, Victoria Park GC, Solo.

    Stats: 4/10 fairways, 9/18 greens, 31 putts.
Score: PBBBPPPPP PPPPbBPPB; 37:32:69 (+3:+1:+4); Played to 8.9.

A nice early wake up to be first off at 5am at Victoria Park on Cheap Tuesday ($17). Unfortunately, they had people going off the other nine as well later on, so my round slowed down, but I was still in at work just after 8am.

It's an easy course to score well on since it is so short, but I still hit it well. I need to do better from within 100 to convert, and while the putting was good by leaving tap ins all the time, hitting it hard enough to go past the hole would have seen more putts drop. Besides my first tee shot without warm up, I was pretty happy with the driver; it feels like I have a bit more control over it now.

I just need to wait for my official handicap to catch up with my good play now, because I'm off 8.5 if I track all of my social rounds like they do in the U.S.

Next round: I was meant to play Gatton on the weekend just gone, until it got COVID-canned, but I'll probably aim to play a more local comp this weekend.

15/01/2021, Gailes GC, Red Temp, 9 Hole Social.

    Stats: 3/7 fairways, 4/9 greens, 13 putts.
    Score: BbPPPBPPP; 36 (+1); Played to 3.0.

After a golf clinic on Wednesday, my 13yo was keen to get out on the course, which makes me happy. Off to Gailes we went for nine holes, and I joined him in hitting off the red tees. Except for a couple of holes, it didn't make the course as short as I thought.

I wasn't really happy with the driver performance, unlike Tuesday's game, but everything else seemed quite good, and I continue to keep scoring well regardless of position.

Next round: Finally, another comp round. I couldn't get anything local, so my neighbour and I are off to Hills tomorrow. Hopefully, it isn't too bad. I can only remember the bad holes.

16/01/2021, Hills GC, White Tee Stableford.

Eight over with three balls in water hazards, plus a lost ball, is a strange scorecard to submit. A couple of these were because I just didn't know the course (and the holes are stupid). I'm pretty happy to have a 40 point stab round for the first time since I don't know when; probably early 2015.

The game is in a nice little spot at the moment. Driving isn't great, but I'm not putting into the trees much, and the rough isn't punishing at many courses in Queensland. I'm just trying to get on or close to the greens in regulation, as much as possible, because I know the putter can usually do the job, and the short game is showing signs of improvement. Today was good day for the irons, and the white tees kept the course short, so I was able to get near those greens.

Next round: I'm booked in to play St Lucia at 5:37a for the first time in maybe 20 years on Monday morning before work, a bit like I did at Vic Park this week, although not first off.

I'm making hay while the sun shines, and before school goes back, with another pre-work round today. Another good score, with the letdown being a few three putts, some chunky iron shots, and a double on the par 3 16th. The good was a streak of only 5 regulation putts over 6 holes to start the back nine, as well as a streak of six greens in a row to finish the front nine.

My self calculated handicap which would include all social rounds, is now down to 7.9, which reflects my good form of late, so I've got a couple of shots up my sleeve compared to my official cap.

Next round: Aiming for a local round on Saturday.

The run of good form finally came to an end. There isn't much positive to take out of the round, except maybe the short game, and half decent irons, when I actually had a shot at the green. The problem with playing well for a while, was the higher expectations, and I didn't keep my cool when things didn't go my way. Although, I'd be shirty any time I took a two shot penalty for hitting the wrong ball (from a hazard), but the crankiness would normally only carry over until the next hole.

If that's my bad round, then it's not too bad of a score, although I am concerned that I am not playing well each time I play at Wolly Park, and that's where I plan to join.

Next round: I'll try to have a nine hole hit with the boy on one of the next couple of days.

    Score: BBBPPPDBB PBBbBBbBP 43:38:: 81 (+7:+3:+10) Slope 136 Scratch 71 - Played to 8.3

The course was soft today and the greens a little slower than previous visits. Had a good solid round - 36 Points, drove the ball well and made some good up and downs. Made a double from a blocked out drive, took the safe play to punch out then hit a poor approach and poor chip. Best hole for the day was on the Par 5 16th - drive, second short of the creek and the third left a 2m putt for the birdie.

I was in Tenterfield from Wednesday to this morning, didn't play today but played 4 full rounds and a half round over the previous three days.
    Par 71.
    83
    87
    86
82 - first round without a double bogey or worse, second round of yesterday
    46(9 holes)
Fairways and greens stats weren't great but the greens were quite soft and my game from 100m in was really good for once, regularly sticking the ball close enough for a 1 putt, especially from chips close to the green. Really enjoyed the course.

30 points at Thaxted today. It was medal day yesterday yesterday so the course was playing at max length. Tees were at the tips and flags at the back of greens. However most of my woes came on the greens with horrible lag putting the main issue.

30 points with that many putts suggests the rest of your game was alright. How many putts do you average?

Today was definitely an exception. Golfpad tells me I average 33.8 putts at Thaxted which sounds about right.

First game of the new year, and I'm hoping this will be one of the worst. 28 points, and only some good work late around the greens got me to that.

I particularly did not enjoy half-topping/smothering two drives into our velcro rough which went about 50 metres each. Fortunately. they weren't on the holes where the ladies tee is about 120m forward of the white tees.
