Par Comps: What's the beef?
Joe S posted in another thread about his disdain for par comps.
Par can be a sh1t of a game, I avoid it most times when it comes up
(nothing against you Joe, its a common refrain)
Despite hanging around golf clubs most of my life, I've never really understood what the problem was. I liked them from the start because they were generally quicker and I never had a handicap where I was "denied a double plus".
I was involved in doing the fixtures at the club and wanted to introduce a par comp at least once a month, the captain said, "they will lynch you". Clearly many are in Joe's camp.
Educate me Ozgolf, is "par is shite" a furphy, if not what am I missing?

I like the format but most seem to dislike par. I hear the old chestnut of not getting credit for a four pointer but never any acknowledgment that they typically have far more wipes than 4 pointers. And some somehow find it hard to work out their scores?? Par was banished from our club's fixtures for a number of years but is slowly making a comeback to now be a once a month event.

Playing off the reds in a par comp with a ball lift assist contraction attracted to the flagstick would be my dream round.

I don't get the problem either. I think the format is great, and like playing matchplay against the course.

Nothing wrong with par. Seems to be the higher cappers that don't like it.

I don't understand the dislike for it either. I'm always gonna have more wipes than 4 pointers so it works for me.

I used to dislike it, but once I started looking at it form the POV of matchplay vs. the course it all made sense & I don't mind it now.

The common argument "i dont get it, so its stupid" is stupid.
(Logical fallacy: argument from ignorance)
Golfers dont like it because they think they are wasting shots if they birdie a hole when they have a shot.

I found a lot of people I play with get it a bit better about it when I explain that you automatically get a point per hole when you are standing on the first tee.
You get no extra points for a minus, square gives you another point, a plus gives you 2.
Considering people get more wipes than 4 pointers, it's actually a much fairer game than it gets credit for.

As Courty said, match play v the course, far more of a challenge than stableford.

We play a modified version, I think they call it Par+
So you get a double plus for a 4 pointer

Isn't that Bonus Par ??
Par isn't popular because as said above it doesn't allow high handicappers their 4 (or even 5) point recovery holes.

FFS! Basically stableford, without having a wipe.

Wait till some club introduces Bisque Bogey, that will screw with a few heads.

Many years ago, the majority of Sat. and Wed. events over winter were par, which sped up play and meant the afternoon field wasn't finishing in the dark.
That worked until 1990's Nick Faldo videos recommended thorough preparation, with USPGA telecasts backing it up, meant that par events took the same time as stableford and stroke.
Personally, I don't mind them once every few months, but they can be a PITA when the game is a little off and endless recoveries to what would be a 'tap in for 1 point'.
I remember once standing on the 17th tee at an OzGolf event after 14 minuses, and wondering the social media reaction to recording a -16.
If I was scheduling them in the club, it would be the week after the monthly medal, as a relief for those who grossed 100+ the previous outing and those who don't put their name down for stroke events.
You don't get me. I'm part of the Union.

Love par events. Can be more aggressive with less penalty. Makes me play the course different. Speeds up play (well it should if people pick up when out of the hole).

I've never understood the logic that a Par event speeds up the pace of play anymore than a stableford does and that has NEVER been reflected in the speed of competition play at my home club. Don't play many Par events due to the lack of numbers at my home club, it frustrates the higher handicap or uneducated golfer and the "better" golfers walk away feeling "cheated" as it's "just a +"
As mentioned they barely play them at my home club and usually when they do it's a Bisque Par to keep the higher handicap golfers happy and to try and ensure they get 80+ in the field for the day.

Well I feel it speeds up play as you should pick up the ball when you can't score a half. I can't see how you don't gain time when no one is putting for a point from 20 feet, let alone chipping and putting for a 9 vs walking to the next tee after a wipe after 4 shots.
Also agree that although 4 points are gettable for a lot of golfers, even very good ones, you have many more wipes than 4 pointers so odds are always in your favour.
