I'm a big fan of making as few changes as possible - so I think the idea of pushing Wade up to open has merit. Everyone else then stay as is, with Green coming in to debut. If you get Marnus to open, everyone in the order (except for Green) also then shuffles up one further, and the idea of Head coming in at 2-5 on a seaming deck doesn't fill me with any confidence at all.
The reports are that Burns is in, with Wade to open with him and Green to debut.
All of which makes the team for the Second Test (assuming Warner is fit again) also a total crapshoot. If Burns and Green go OK, does Wade have to make way for Warner, in spite of being shuffled out of position?

Burns and Wade took the shine off the new ball. Mission Accomplished.
The umpiring in this test match is ****ing pathetic. Neither of them is up to test match standard.
Given the conditions, bowling and trend of the match the opening stand wasn't a total disaster. It's a shame both got out when you had the feeling today might eventually be their day. Paine's innings worth 100 but it's still a huge hill to climb given India will bat thru the day period.

Batter's might not need to score many the way these bowlers are going for Australia.
Oh my ...
Well done to Joe, his supporters will be so proud. He got a shit decision in the first innings so was due for some red ink.
What an unbelievable day's test cricket. I knew we were still in it, but expected to be chasing 300. It's nice to not be on the receiving end of a collapse like that for once
Allan Border wanted Paine to declare at 7-111 in the first innings. Bad idea then, even worse in hindsight.
One of the most bizarre Tests I've seen. The way we bowled them out today was the stuff of fantasies, the sort of thing that may have been daydreamed about by a few of the Aussies. The only flip of the script was Shami retiring hurt instead of Cummins getting 5 a piece with Josh.
Given the context of the game it was a sensational opening partnership by Wade and Burns. Wade was selectively aggressive early and put us straight on the front foot while Burns got flowing later as Wade slowed. I was hoping they'd get us home but Wade was out in the most freakish of ways. A fitting surreal type finish to the match as Burns hooks a ball that looks like it goes through fine legs hand for a 6 to bring up an unlikely 50. Enthralling.

I think i'd give Head a spell next game if Warner is fit. Tough decisions but a good problem to have.

Agreed.
I have the same problem with Head that I do with Burns - both have fundamental flaws with their techniques and neither seem to be improving. They will succeed at times, but I cannot see them either becoming genuinely consistent. I would stick with Green - even though he is young, he looks solid technically with both bat and ball. Wade deserves credit for taking on the new ball, so Head is the one to make way.
For sure. Wades early positivity while Burns found his feet staved off any chance the chase of 90 might get a little silly. It was a fine little innings ended by pretty much a fluke. I think Burns is a bit better than Head at this stage. Green looked good and he might have been a smite unlucky. It was a decent catch and a couple of feet wider would have been 4 i think. Extremely likely he ends up a better bat than Head and his bowling is promising and a big asset even if it hasn't been needed much as yet.

Looks like this won't be an issue for Melbourne, with Warner ruled out. Same XI is therefore likely, with a bit of a shoot-out occurring throughout the entire batting order for spots in the Third Test (Sydney?) when Warner should be ready to return.
Anyone who scores runs is probably safe, but anyone (except for Smith and Marnus) with a double failure may be in trouble.
Makes for some interesting shoot outs doesn't it. I think they might be inclined to keep Green. Tho he wasn't needed much on the bowling front things won't always be that easy and if he nabbed a fifty or something i think he'd be embedded. I think i saw Will was ruled out again too. The pressure will be on for spots as we have a couple of reasonable contenders in the mix now.

Irrespective of what happens in the second innings, Wade needs to be kicked in the arse for that shot. WFT? He is technically pretty sound, but mentally seems to struggle with the balance between too defensive (see last year against New Zealand) and outright stupid aggression (see today).
Huge mockers on Head, but he is playing beautifully straight today. Great sign.
