Default North East Melbourne golf courses

    Hi Guys

Moving to north east Melbourne in the next 6 month and am going to need a new golf course.
Interested in thoughts on membership base and how course is generally maintained and hold up in bad weather. I will have practice round at each before decision but some things are hard to know from one or two rounds.

    Possible courses;
    Eastern
    Heritage
    Yering Meadows
    Gardiner Run
    Roseanna
    Heidelberg
    Yarrambat
    Any others I've missed

For background 35 year old, float between 14-17 handicap. In short, once a week hack.

    Thank

I liked Heritage, when I played it.

Yering Meadows is the worst place to play golf in Australia - Constant gunshots from the rifle club on one side, occasionally drowned out by the light aircraft strip on the other.
You don't get me. I'm part of the Union.

Heritage is a good track x2, but is constantly for sale and struggling for cashYering is actually Latin for dumpEastern = Excellent and improving

I was a member at Eastern before coming back to Sydney, good club environment and the other facilities are great (if you will use them, we did as an expat family).

Some very nice holes, has got the potential to get a bit boring if playing there for a few years, especially off the tee, very good greens though.

Yering was a tough layout, could be brutal on an off day! Heritage is great, but the condition was up and down (really down at one stage) and I’m not sure what had happened there in the 2 years since I came back. Gardeners Run was ok, probably the opposite of Yering and a bit too easy of that makes sense.

If I had my time again, and depending on where you live, I would drive the extra 20 off minutes to the RACV in Healesville.

The only really good golf is at the Heritage but the running of the place is chooklotto. The only one I would consider is Rosanna. Nice course, nice walk, old fashioned members course. The thing I've always liked is that you are in the middle of the suburbs yet no cars, no houses and I've always found it a pleasant game.

When eastern has a few more years for some trees to grow, easily the pick.
Heritage, never know if it will be mowed or not
Yering, can handle the gun shots, and the planes, but it is just brutal if your off your game
Gardiners Run,good track, very busy, winter golf can be annoying their
    RACV Healesville,excellent,short

Mate I am a member of Rosanna.. you will not find a better bunch of people at any other club period. The course is a hidden gem and in winter it has been holding up in perfect condition. Could not recommend highly enough

I take it you'll be living in the middle of this area as its a fair drive from Rosanna to Healsville!

Was a member at Heidelberg a long time a go, still enjoy the course and it looks like they have put a lot more effort into the course over the past year or so and a lot trees have come down. Possibly does the best in winter of the clay belt courses.

I wasn't a fan of Gardiners Run, some seriously ugly mounding going on. Yering had potential, but the course overly bunkered and long, especially for such an exposed site. Eastern seemed a bit sterile to me, could feel better once the trees grown in and the fairways are sorted. Haven't got to Heritage, but sounds like it has the better courses but has been a shambles for over a decade.

Loved Healsville, by far the most fun and unique course outside of the sandbelt and peninsula, but it can get wet during winter (more so than other clay belt courses).

It wasn't on your list but it appears Kew have done a bunch of work to improve the course, the membership did have a reputation for a long time, but that may have improved.

Yes in the middle, location is around 20-25 minutes to all theses courses (google maps, have not done the drives yet)
Kew 30-35min. I think the closer the course the more I'd end up playing.

If thats something you are considering, check how long it will take when you think you will play, traffic will be a big part of that decision of heading after work for example. Even more so if you have kids.

I'll be in Melbourne for a few days of work at the start of May, so I've been looking through the forum and other websites at courses near where my brother lives (Yarrambat), to have a hit with him on a Friday.

The picks seem to be RACV Healesville, Gardiners Run, and Growling Frog, and maybe Club Mandalay, but I'm leaning towards Healesville as it seems like a fun public accessible course that could suit a regular golfer like myself, and an occasional golfer like my brother. What do you think?

I'd love to play more than one round while down, particularly after I arrive at the airport on a Monday, but it just looks to hard to get to anywhere just for one round, without it costing a fortune (hire car, taxi, Uber).

Thanks, TS, but I'm visiting my brother, so I would be playing with him.

Northern, not that far from Tulla, is a better than decent course (I haven't played there for 4 years though)

I did note that the review comments on the top 100 page were from the fan club.

Healesville is a lot of fun, short but some really interesting shots to play.

In that area you also have Eastern, Yering and Gardeners Run. Eastern would be my pick out of those 3.

Andy go to Healesville, it is mostly very good, quite quirky and different, usually in very good condition. I think you need to be an RACV member or guest of one to play there, but not 100% sure.

The other courses mentioned are not worth bothering with if you only have the one round.

Thanks Webster. I would assume that my brother is an RACV member for his cars, but I'll check.
