    Default WDYSTM - November 2020

First comp rd back after lockdown.

33 points, with an extremely cold putter, must have had 6 lip out's and 4 that ran the edge, other than that hit the ball quite well.

Went from 9.7 to 10.7, as a 43 point rd dropped out.

It was a very difficult day today, with a 30 metre breeze that, when a cross wind, affected the ball if you didn't allow for it, and naturally didn't move the ball at all when you did allow for it. Except for putting, when it was always a factor.

I'm actually happy with my nett 76 in the stroke event. I hit the ball well, but my long putting in the wind was awful, and I missed more 5 footers than I holed. I started each nine with a birdie, and finished each nine with a 3 putt bogey.

I was also the only player in my group who didn't lose a ball in the tons of leaf litter and tree branches left after the storms and strong winds of the last few days. So that was a positive.

A disappointing and frustrating 30 points for me today.

I hit lots of really good shots, and only a few bad ones, but the bad ones tended to follow each other, so 4 double bogeys made a good score impossible. Bad long putting again made life difficult.

Went round Gunnedah GC this morning. First game with no fairways/hybrids. Utility irons now in play.
    87 off the stick.
Considering I topped 90% of my drives a few months back, I'm quite happy.

Stroke round today, first game back after getting over the flu, and I'd apparently forgotten which end of the club to hold, getting to +7 through 6 holes. Then I remembered, and played the next 12 in even par, with some excellent ball striking. 78/72 (par 71)

    BPXBXBPPP-PPbBPbPPB

The 3rd was a disaster - pin-high in 2 after punching around some trees, but then took 3 chips to get on the green. The 5th wasn't much better: a 3-putt after missing the green on a par 3. Ball striking was generally pretty good all round, some really nice drives & irons, just some shocking play around the green early on.

    07/11/2020, McLeod GC, Stableford.

    Stats: 6/13 fairways, 3/18 greens, 30 putts.
    Score (10th start): PPBBPBBPB PBPXPPXXB; 39:46:85 (+5:+9:+14).

I played the COVID-delayed McLeod Cup today, which I haven't played since the days when OZgolf owned the trophy. I played fairly solid golf for most of the day, where I couldn't convert well played holes (scarified greens didn't help), but also got away with some of my bad shots. 8 over through 15 was looking good for a round under the handicap for the first time in the five year handicap history, but that disappeared quickly with a couple of hooked drives leading to a triple and double on my 16th and 17th. That will teach me to buy a box of new balls, with three gone in those two holes.

Next round: Definitely next weekend, but I feel I should squeeze in nine holes after work one day during the week.

14/11/2020, Rosewood GC, Rosewood Open, Stroke.

    Stats: 9/14 fairways, 2/18 greens, 30 putts.
    Score: XPBXBPXBB PBBPBBBBB; 47:43:90 (+11:+7:+18).

This is not the game I want to take to South Australia. I just can't hit greens, and often it is not even close, even though I am hitting enough fairways. Big cuts seem to have crept in with the irons, yet I hit them fine off the tee on par 3s. I won't rate the short game from today, as the greens were hail damaged and were the slowest (longest) I've ever played on in a comp, which I never got used to.

It's a bit demoralising, as much as I try to just enjoy playing.

Next round: Wolston Park next Sunday maybe, but I need to at least go to the range during the week.

Fairway stats are decent Andy. If you keep giving yourself open shots to the green that's a good start.

Part of what is making it so frustrating, Flavzz. It seems so wasteful, when the driver is meant to be the hardest club to hit. Although, if I do miss with the driver now, it is a bigger miss than what it used to be, so more trouble (or lost). Hopefully my iron shots click first rather than the driver going cold.

I bet mate. Golf tends to be like that. Fairways hit just make the game that much easier. I'm sure it will all click soon. Probably in SA!

    22/11/2020, Wolston Park GC, Stableford.

    Stats: 4/11 fairways, 7/18 greens, 32 putts.
    Score: PPPBXXBPP PXPPBXXXP; 41:40:81; (+6:+8:+14); stab 15:12:27pts.

Early on, I thought I was finally in for a good round, but it turns out that range form is not the same as course form, and I struggled for consistency for the round. I made par look easy on some holes, then would play absolute trash on the next, especially when the pulls came into my game from who knows where.

The driver wasn't as bad as the fairways stats show, I finally hit some greens, and the putting was solid, without sinking any long ones. Chipping stinks, although I feel that I was short sided for many of my misses.

The 17th is the hardest hole on the course, and for my stats, I'm recording it as a par, but unfortunately my scorecard says differently. A guy in a social group picked up my ball amongst a cluster of 3 (also a Srixon) before I got to the area, and I didn't discover that he had grabbed my Srixon until I was about to putt after my flushed hybrid approach. Wipe, instead of the three points. Two more of our groups balls got picked up on the next hole. Bloody idiot social players!

Next round: As much as I prefer comps, it looks like it will be a Sunday social 18 at Oxley next week at social green fee cost. Blegh! I might look for a comp somewhere on Saturday, as well, in that case.

28/11/2020, Mt Ommaney Open, McLeod GC, 4BBB Stroke.

    Stats: 7/13 fairways, 8/18 greens, 34 putts.
    Score: PPPBBPXBP PPPXBPPPB; 42:38:80; (+5:+4:+9).

How good is golf? I'm loving it at the moment, even though I played really bad last week. Today, I played good....finally. I stuffed up a couple of holes, and couldn't sink putts on the bumpy greens, but it felt like I had found a decent swing. It is my best round since I won the Vic Champs Saturday round earlier this year, if not better.

I had three under my daily handicap, which was also our 4BBB Stroke score.
We got my partner's name on the card 5 times, but only because he holed out first. I had the same nett score on all of those holes, but the handicapper probably won't touch me, which is a shame. Am I leading the virtual SA Champs?

On Wednesday, I spent over an hour practicing chips inside 25m, because my stats told me that I currently suck at this. I left the practice session feeling confident with it, but only got to apply it once during the whole round. Typical!

Next round: I really, really want to play tomorrow. Can anyone host me? If not, I guess I'll just have to wait to play Hamilton Island on Thursday.

29/11/2020, Gailes GC, Temp White, Solo Round.

    Stats: 4/15 fairways, 11/18 greens, 34 putts.
    Score: bBPBbPXPP BPBBPPXBP; 38:42:80; (+2:+6:+8).

I was antsy all day, because I wasn't playing golf, so I headed to Gailes for a late afternoon 9. I was going around fast enough to fit in the back nine too for a 2.5h total.

Despite what BYU says above, I drove it terribly today with plenty of pulls, but that didn't stop me from hitting greens and scoring well. I even amazed myself with some of the approach shots hit today; the irons/hybrids have come a long way in the last few rounds. In fact, the 2 hybrid is going so well, that I have to replace the 3 iron with a hybrid too.

At least I converted a couple of birdie chances today, although I would have liked to sink some more putts. I didn't adjust to the speed well, after yesterday's greens.

This takes me to four under for the virtual SA Champs. What do I win?

Next round: Hamo Island on Thursday, unless I get out again....

31 points today in what can only be described as perfect conditions for golf.

14 pts on the way out, no consistency, scrambling every hole.

17 pts coming back in, was also doing my head in until I got to the 17th tee and appeared to have worked out what the issue was. Piped the drive down the par 5 17th, then nailed a 3wd 1 mtr short of the green. Putted up to 4 foot dropped the birdie. Pared the last.

38 points this morning, for the first time in a long time the putter was working. It could have been even better but a wipe on 17 did not help. I think this flagged round will take me down to a new low hc.

Played in the Oxley Stableford thingy on Sunday, ended up with 26 points (99 off the stick). Handicap is still lower than my skill level would indicate. Front 9 was better for 16 points (44), and I was pleased to play all the par 3s well for once. Hit two of them and just missed the other. Unfortunately I fell away on the back 9 with some crappy iron play and drives ending up in crap positions on some holes, behind trees or shrubs blocking my backswing, overhanging trees preventing using the club I normally would from the distance etc. It was nice to be out though.

37 points on Sunday, including holing a 30 pace putt and a couple of 30 footers on cored greens, and missing 4 inside 4 feet.

After 40 points won me a ball last week, 37 was 3rd in the comp.

I still suck at golf though. Anyway, if all goes to plan, its now 7 rounds in the next 5 days. Bring it on.
