    Default Australian Open Cancelled

    https://www.golf.org.au/australias-m...ents-cancelled

The Open, PGA and Women's Open due to be played in February 2021 are all cancelled.

They have just played a tournament in WA.

Whilst the tournaments would have no international players and the women's would suffer the most, would a tournament of our best playing be so bad. If all the footy codes, netball, horse racing and everything else continuing, why not golf.

Is it decision making viewed through a Victorian prism?

No, its a decision that recognises the field depth would be significantly compromised, and thus less interesting for potential sponsors, spectators and the like. No international would want to do two weeks quarantine to play for a pissy AUD purse.

About time Australia remove itself from this cacoon and learn to live with this virus.

Spoken to those who have been infected, all they had was a cold and minor cough. Dustin Johnson was also infected last week but will be playing next week. Killing our economy for this is madness

Maybe more of a decision related to sponsors not wanting to spend their $$$$ with no crowds there, so no corporate hospitality etc.

WB, I get all that, leaving the women's event to one side, no international will come here without getting paid and a few of our own can't be asred, so no real difference this year.

If the points you raise are the sole reasons, if things remain largely unchanged with international travel, presume it will be cancelled in 2022.

    Sensible decisions.

The Oz tour is minor in the greater scheme of golf, so nobody is going to make extra effort on its behalf, not the players, administrators or broadcasters.

You probably wouldn't have got the Aussies currently overseas to come home to play if they needed to quarantine, not even the Korn Ferry or Euro Tour guys.

The bottom line with most sport in the virus climate is that it is TV (and TV revenue/contract) driven. Australian TV doesn't care about golf. I don't know that there are even long term contracts in place. So without TV revenue to drive it, the effort to create a bubble just isn't worth it.

Besides, with some state premiers apparently not wanting to be part of Australia any longer, all events would probably have to be played in the one state, and maybe all at the one resort. Not many would want to see three weeks in a row at Royal Pines or 13th Beach.

On the other hand sport deprived Australians might be attracted to this tournament in droves, thus giving sponsors what they need.
