Default Laptop battery issue in son's laptop

So Kyan's having an issue where his dell laptop sometimes won't work on battery. It's weird, it registers that the battery is there, and will show it at say 91%, but plugged in it won't charge and if you unplug it it turns straight off. But leave it a while, and it works like normal. Then it doesn't. Then it does. I replaced the battery about 6 months ago; couldn't get one from Dell. So maybe it's the replacement battery, but maybe it isn't. He needs a working one for school and they're not allowed to use the adaptors, so it's a pain for him. Problem is I don't know if it's just the replacement battery, or something else going wrong with his laptop? I'd happily just buy another battery rather than replace the laptop. He does some tech classes so needs an i5 with 8g and decent battery life, which is what this had until the last few days.

Any thoughts or wisdom? Dell weren't much help, but when I was in chat with them the laptop was behaving and tested fine. I haven't been able to find much help from google yet.

does he ever run the battery flat or leave it permanently connected to a charger.
Both can shorten the life of a battery considerably.

i have had dell batteries last less than 6 months, because I used it as a desktop always on charger, since then i remove the battery unless I am mobile with it. The current battery I have is at least 5 years old now and still fine.

It gets used both ways. On battery at school, and both here. The first battery lasted a bit over 3 years, before it was dying before the end of school, and that's when I replaced it. I just don't know if this is the battery or something with the laptop, because sometimes it's fine. One of the times it was working on battery I ran a video for an hour and it only used about 20%. But later that day it wouldn't work on battery again. Then later again it was fine.
I think I may have to just get another battery and hope that's it. Chapter to try that than just go a new laptop.........

Definitely sounds like a dead battery pack to me.

After market battery packs, in my limited experience with them, tend to be crap.

Add AC adapters to that list as well.

Yes, have had issues with after market ac adaptors for dells; Dell apparently add a third wire into the mix and the laptop can detect if it's an original one or not, and will power the laptop but the battery won't charge.

Unfortunately after market batteries is all I've got. I checked with Dell 6 months ago, and again later last week but they have no batteries for his laptop anymore.

4 years. He was down to getting about 2 to 2.5 hours of battery life at school, hence having to replace it.

yeah; my laptop was replaced with a "aftermarket" ebay battery pack, and it does show charging all the time, but once unplugged at full it will just die after 15minutes.

I am guessing it is one of those with a fake chip with a lower capacity battery cells in it.
