Default North NSW Coast Golf Trip

Looking for ideas...8 of us are planning a trip up to Bonville in Coffs Harbour in a few months and we want to play some courses on the way up. We will be starting in Sydney and first stop might be Hawks Nest then Forster, but then after that I am after recommendations between Forster and Coffs for maybe two more courses. I have checked out web sites for Tallwoods and Port Macquarie, they sound alright....are there any other gems we should be considering??

Recommend Port Macquarie very good track. Nambucca is not bad either, not a gem but something different, course is all on an island and greens (when I played) were awesome.

Presume you are leaving from the Gong, I would play at Belmont on day one, either stay there or head on towards Newcastle. On the north side of Newcastle is the golf club at Fern Bay...a must. After Newcastle , skip the old people towns and head straight to Coffs.

I've played a lot at Bonville, its OK, but I also enjoy Coffs.

I presume you are playing Tuncurry. It is by far the best course between Port Stephens and Coffs. Tallwoods might actually be quite good as a destination for a group. It's very hilly and cart compulsory, but there are a few fun parachute tee shots perfect for long drive prize holes.

I'd agree with Maza. Port Macq is probably next best, and Nambucca is different. Fisho's may enjoy Nambucca. Sometimes you can see big fish in the dams. I'd only bother with Kempsey or South West Rocks if you want to see kangaroos up close. And if you want to see roo's, go to Woolgoolga while in the Coffs area.

Played Port Macquarie a couple of weeks ago - fun rolling land, in the middle of a reno and modernisation but you would barely pick it condition wise. Good meals at the clubhouse as well, and its only an hour and half away from Bonville.

I havent played either but walked around Tallwoods during construction with the course builder guy and he told me a bunch of cool stuff about the designer that I have completely forgotten. The architect is highly renowned, also forgot his name. Could be Michael Hurdzan. There is some very good golf holes there. I cant imagine PM being better.

Tallwoods is a great layout but conditioning was a bit so so when I played it 2 weeks or so ago.

Tuncurry was decent too but a bit same same.

Agree about Tuncurry... great site as its all sand based but not a lot of imagination went into the design.

To be honest I preferred the Forster course.

Not for an awfully long time.I heard that the course suffered a lot through last year's dought and they started losing whole fairways. I really hope the course has recovered somewhat since.

Look at Harrington instead of Taree Harrington is only a 9 holer but well worth it.

Tuncurry is a better track than Tallwoods by far, locals say the same thing. Forster is currently in shocking condition, greens are repatched everywhere.

I have in-laws in the area, Forster is fun for a social whack, Tuncurry is a challenging golf course and has a new 9th hole that has been shortened by about 40 metres. My dad plays at Harrington a couple of times a week, Taree would be closer but he just doesn’t rate the place.

Yep, that’s why it was shortened by 40 instead ?

100% agree, 190+ metres of flat crap, this green has a nice shape and I think they’re moving the tee a little.

I believe the clubhouse will be going where the 9th green was.

Can't get on to Bonville next week due to unfortunate timing, so playing Coffs instead.
Is Sawtell worth an afternoon wander whilst the wife and kids go shopping?

Total course snobs who can't abide anything less than group 1 level would be bored, because it is fairly short and a bit up & back. But for a social afternoon, I quite enjoyed it when I played there (but this was quite some time ago). Volunteer labour for the most part, so there are no guarantees about the condition of the course.

Much better than watching family members shopping (and Coffs is nothing special as a shopping destination).

I'm a golf snob and don't mind a hit at Sawtell. Played it a few times, low lying areas get a bit water logged.

Thanks. They have dried out the last few weeks. This might be a 3pm and try to play as many holes before dark option
