This worked. Copying the files from another Ghost fixes the problem that the files just went missing.
Good on Bushnel support for providing no help at all.
BTW a replacement battery can be found on Ebay or Aliexpress for about $22

After all this effort, I could have just downloaded it from ChampionData website (the former AU distributor). A google search resulted in this fairly quickly.
